Strange. I was looking for a tutorial to hook up an active sub to an amp with no sub output. Goal: boost the bass in my small condo living area. The strange part is that my amp is a Yamaha R-S202 and my sub is a Polk PSW-10...the exact same as the system in this tutorial. My sub arrives today, I will update. Update: My sub arrived today, installed as per the tutorial. Works perfectly, happy as can be.

If I want to hook up two of those exact same subwoofers, I just hook up the left channel to one subwoofer and then the right channel to the other subwoofer? Also, would that make them stereo?

Excellent video - I was able to configure a Yamaha RS 202 into a 2.1 with your instructions. Now extending it further - Is there a way to bring in a center speaker into this setup ? Thanks!

what if only my amp has a high level input and not the speakers? will the sub still work or do the subs need to be hooked up to the speakers aswell

why won’t this duplicate the frequencies that cross over from the A speakers to the B sub? also what’s the benefit of doing this over just using the speaker-level output on the subwoofer?

I don't think it requires two speakers A and B, instead one should be fine.

Thanks for shearing youre knowledge, BUT I have a old pioneer SA-9500 would this system also work on a vintage amplifier ? ? I suppose the sub must have a 2 speaker inputs to make it work ??? please educate me . Sorry for my bad enlish writing ;-)

Great video. Do you have to set the low pass level? I'm assuming yes and that you set it to be near the low-end cut-off for your bookshelf speakers. (example: if your bookshelf speakers are 60-20,000 HZ, you set the subwoofer pass level at 60 or perhaps 100)

How could you connect a subwoofer like this without an RCA input, on a more recent amp. For example an Onkyo TX-RZ 820 (7.2 channel) which doesn't have A/B but just normal speaker connections.

I have a sub that has has speaker inputs and speaker outputs similar to the one in the video. I have connected the front left and right channel speaker outs from the amp into the left and right speaker inputs on the sub. Then connected the left and right speaker outs from the sub to the left and right front speakers.

First of all you could just use the REC out of the amplifier and second you only need speaker A. All powered subs have internal crossover and can filter by themselves.

I love the garage system but it's best to just run 2 sets of wires from the receiver and avoid the sub's high level output except when daisy chaining identical subs. Besides being a better electrical connection, it's easier to place the sub and speakers when they're not connected by wires. You don't need or want thick wires running to the sub either, as only a trickle of power goes to the sub. For aesthetic purpose, the two wires running to the sub can be sheathed in a single braded cable jacket, the ends fastened with shrink tube or small zip ties.

You can use a line-converter. These are typically 12v devices used in car audio, but a home version may exist, or easily hacked with a suitable 12v adapter. Run the high (speaker) level to the input, and the line converter outputs via an RCA connection to your amp.

My receiver is a Pioneer vsx-d602s, when I did this with my Polk audio powered sub it would work on all sound modes except Dolby surround for my theater settings. Is it acceptable to plug the sub into my A speaker port, and then plug my front tower speakers into the other two inputs on the back of the subwoofer?

What is the model of your Onkyo ... from what I know that lower end Onkyo (as mine) have a channel to power a passive subwoofer but doesn't have a pre-out to connect a powered one ... In general pre out are (RCA output) that needs to be connected to an amplifier to run a subwoofers... while channels are amplified ports that can power a passive speaker/subwoofer

Subwoofer usually need more power than speakers and that could be the reason ... also I checked the manual for your unit and it doesn't have a channel to power a passive Subwoofer ... If you have an active Subwoofer you can use the pre out port. Just check that you have set the Subwoofer option to 'on' in speaker config ... Finally if you decide to continue using your passive Subwoofer, I'd try to A) connect it to left front speaker channel (a and b for extra power) ... B) set the front speaker to Large in the config so it would receive the low frequency signal ... C)then connect the front speakers to the surround ports and set the 'listening mode' in the quick menu to "all ch stereo" so the surround speakers receive the same signals of front speakers and you should end up with 3.1
