Hey Peeps! I've always disliked patterns that would have you put a cuff in to a sleeve at the underarm seam; they don't sit right and it means I can't French seam the sleeve seam! We all know how I feel about that! the V9077 pattern had a continuous lap pattern piece and I love the finish it gives. So much so that I have applied it to 4 different dress patterns so far. You can of course use plackets to finish the opening and I really like how they look on garments with lots of other shirt details but I think this method gives a beautiful couture like finish without any obvious stitching on the outside of the sleeve. What do you think? Will you try this method out? IF you do make sure to use the #sianmademedoit hashtag so I can see your beautiful work.

Thank you so very much! My pattern was wrong and told me to put wrong side to right side and it is just a mess. Made no sense. But your tutorial has made it so much easier...I think I can do this now!

This was very helpful thank you! Just a quick note, it would be nice if the fabric wasn’t so patterned so that it is easier to distinguish the right side from the wrong and see the stitches. But all in all, it was very helpful!

Brilliant, thank you! I'm just starting to sew my first button-up shirt, and the long-sleeve version has a continuous lap. It's a Burda pattern and all the instructions are a bit sparse, so it'll be good to have this tutorial to refer to.

Thank you for making this into a seperate video. These mini tutorials are great every time I want to use the technique in a project. You could not have timed this one better. Right now hacking a shirt pattern into a big sleeved, tiered skirt shirtdress. Original pattern has shorter sleeves. Was about to look up how to put this kind of placket in the sleeves. Everything I need is here in one clear video; both pattern work and construction . 😽💕💕💕

Excelent tutorial, I have attempted to do this in the past, however I failed to staighten the lap opening when attaching the facing and got into all sorts of problems. The written intructions were not clear, now I will be able to construct a continuous lap much neater and alot easier. Thanks Sianx

Going to give this a go today. However, the pattern I'm using has the split where the seam of the sleeve meet. Consequently, I've already french seamed said sleeve. I think I can still make it work though.

Thank you. This is helpful. Question/request... You always talk about reading the pattern instructions prior to starting. Would you please think about doing a video of you doing this and your thoughts on the instructions and how you decide how and what needs to be done differently and why.. To me most often the instructions are what messes me up the most. Thank you
@KittenishBehaviourSian
@KittenishBehaviourSian 2 жыл бұрын
Whenever I do a full sew-along I do talk through the instructions and why I'm either following them or ignoring them. For mini tutorials like this it's just about the specific technique. For instance (I mention it in the description) I don't like the finish you get when the cuff attaches to the sleeve with the underarm seam providing the opening which is why I decided to add the continuous lap to all the sleeves I've been making at the moment. I hope this helps 😊

This method is more suited for finer fabrics like the rayon/viscose Sian is using here. That doesn’t mean you can’t used the other method of course. 💕

I find on thinner fabrics it frays. On thinner fabrics I use the sleeve placket with some interfacing.
