When using the broom stick method : Both feet on the stick, one on either side of the animal before you pull, or the neck won't break, with rabbits you want only the neck under the stick, no feet so fold the front feet back under the belly. And use a stick only, anything attached may prevent the stick from lying properly flat against the ground (and hard surface i preferred). If you need to check if the animal is dead : touch the eyeball, if you can without any blink/flinch response the animal is dead.

I invested everything in a large ranch to raise bison only to find out I'm not capable of killing one. My German Shepherd's hobby is chasing rabbits on our ranch. He won't hurt one and if he somehow corners one or the rabbit quits running, the game is over and he walks away. Several months ago, there was a cotton tail that he didn't notice. I pointed it out & told him to "get it!" He did & brought it back to me! It was completely limp but breathing hard. In a panic, I rushed it inside & layed the poor thing on my bed. When the rabbit realized the dog was gone, it got up & appeared fine! It was apparently faking! Relieved I left it alone in my bedroom to recover. My wife found it before I had a chance to tell her the story. So she supplied it with a cat litter box, alfalfa from the barn & fresh water. Next thing I know we have a "pet rabbit" living in our bedroom! Turned out he actually uses the litter box so no issues there & made friends with us almost immediately. Not only does he come hopping when called, he waits until I'm in bed then jumps up to lay against my back. I don't know if it's for warmth or security, but it's a nightly ritual. I didn't know he was a he until later btw. Assuming he might be lonely I bought a companion rabbit from the feed store. Oops... now we have seven baby bunnies. Now these things are beyond cute but... I'm not living with 9 rabbits in my bedroom! I briefly considered putting them in our freezer but after seeing this video, that's not an option. Our ranch is so remote it's impossible to find suitable homes for them so we are stuck with them... for however long rabbits live. Mom & Dad are temporarily separated. When the babies are old enough everybody is going to the vet for permanent birth control, then they are relocating to our barn. We have very spoiled horses with heat & AC in the barn so they should be safe & happy there. And we get our bedroom to ourselves again. Silly me, I thought I was tougher than this. Lesson learned. They don't cost as much as horses & buffaloes to feed & they don't take up as much space either. Overall I think I got off easy.

I understand your reasoning for using the stuffed bunny, but I think for anyone watching videos about butchering rabbits, it’s important to see the brutality so you mentally prepare for it yourself. I just butchered my first rabbit, and use a broomstick to break its neck, and it was instant and no blood and very little shaking even. I just couldn't bring myself to use a gun, and definitely wasn't going to knock it in the head. I've shot enough lame hogs and knock enough baby pigs in the head over the yrs, having had hogs on the farm basically my entire life, that I just can't bring myself to shoot or knock anymore animals I raise in the head anymore. I had put off butchering any of my meat rabbits and was just selling them live, but had 1 of this group I kept back for butchering, so I put it off until I needed the grow out pen for the next group. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy and quick it was using the broomstick method. I think I'm going to make me one of those bars or buy one for the next time, since my old bones don't bend as easy as they use to getting down on the ground using the broomstick. But dislocating the neck like that is definitely the most humane way to do it, because the rabbit doesn't feel a thing, and with a gun or hammer, I just feel there is at least a little pain even if its only for 1 or 2 seconds, but with dislocating the neck, they are dead quicker than you can snap your finger.

Hey there! I love your videos and im honestly considering starting my own rabbitry, you've given so much inspiration and really done more than i've seen quite few other folks do giving genuine explanations and informative videos instead of slapping a 5 second horrible quality together and shoving folks on their merry way. I do have a question, when preforming the ' Hopper Popper ' how do you know all brain activity is ceased and you haven't paralyzed the rabbit? I don't of course mean to come across as foolish or whatnot but the question arose from my partner.
@TheRabbitryCenter Жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking. Fryer rabbits 12 weeks and under are easier to dispatch( neck is smaller and easier to break) after using your dispatch tool, take your fingers and pinch the neck you’ll feel loose neck tissue, the neck bone is detached. Which means the brain stem is broken(instantly kills rabbit)and can’t deliver signals anymore. The rabbits eyes may still be open, because there are no signals telling them to close. Rest assured your rabbit is 100% dead. This video shares more information kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lbCAhJur2Mm3Y5c.html
@AllyScklr2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bobby! Thank you so much for your video. I really liked that you used a stuffed animal. I would like to see the real thing because I’m interested in seeing the rabbit behavior. We don’t eat rabbit but we will have to dispatch a mean one and we plan to raise rabbits eventually and use as dog food to lower costs if times get harder. Can you explain the physiology of how the rabbit dies by pulling his hind legs? The first time I saw it was with the broom and pull method and it freaked me out so much! The guy didn’t even explain it.
@TheRabbitryCenter2 жыл бұрын
The brainstem is snapped and it's an instant death there's no longer any brain activity the eyes may be open but there's no signals to tell the eye lids to shut -there's electricity left in the body so there is some shaking and convulsing which is called death throes don't be alarmed it's just energy expiring in the body which takes 15-45 seconds to expire.

The Rabbitry Center, I didn’t find the method where you use a sharp meat cleaver knife and then chop off the rabbit’s head with force using the knife basically like classic decapitation. The method where you chop the head off is definitely not in the video, is that like one of the less humane methods? The methods mentioned in the video are nice though.
@TheRabbitryCenter Жыл бұрын
I personally don't chop but some folks may be good at that. Rabbits are very twitchy so I like to have a hold of them. A method that didn't make the video is simply grabbing the skull and the hind quarters bending the neck back and pulling will dislocate the neck as well no equipment needed But many folks don't like handling the dispatch like that
@user-kg6nb9ew5k10 ай бұрын
You didn't mentioned the fastest and easiest way. No materials needed. Just your hands. It takes me 1 step from taking the rabbit to having a death rabbit in my hands. You put one hand around his head thumb at the side of its body palm under its chin. With your other hand you grab his hind legs. Bend its head upwards. Stretch that arm downward and pul with the other upward. You break its neck. Instant death. Works also with poultry. One pro tip. Don't pull to hard otherwise you decapitate it and You're covered in blood.
@TheRabbitryCenter10 ай бұрын
That’s good information and I should of included that. It’s in several different books. That said, I found most people that use this method are processing small breeds or fryers and when it comes to roasters it’s much more difficult. But you’re right, I still should have included that. If it only gets knocked out how long do I have to toe the rabbit up and bleed it? Does it require significant force? I use the first method but I'm not the strongest person and ive had too many rabbits suffer because I didnt pull hard enough the first time. Thank you for the video by the way, I'm pretty eager to try something new.
@TheRabbitryCenter2 жыл бұрын
Understood the pellet method works well for that. The pipe demands precision it's very easy to miss or hit a finger. Doesn't take much as long as you use a heavy three-quarter inch steel pipe. You have a few minutes to cut an artery and bleed out. You can use a pellet gun too this requires 0 strength but you still have to shoot it precisely between the ears.

@TheRabbitryCenter2 жыл бұрын
Head stun or pellet gun but breaking the neck is quick and easy and doesn't require any parts or equipment. Dislocating leaves bruising on the neck muscle close to the break which is a very small portion to discard and in most cases not even figured into meat ratio only taking straps/quarters

If you eat the resulting litter certainly. If you want to keep breeding stock back i wouldn't. If you want to breed with a closed group look into something like spiral matings (multiple groups of females, daughters stay there, best son becomes breeder for next group, groups are unrelated) or breeding out from a small number (unrelated 3-4 females and 1 male) for max genetic spread to start with. Breeding close relatives will give problems at some point and when is hard to say untill the problems are right in front of you. Start out with unrelated animals if you can and cull hard if trouble shows up. Breeding relatives should be a emergency step, not how you want to start any breeding group, know your animals traits before you do linebreeding (aka inbreeding when it goes wrong). As long as you can get breeding stock from elsewhere do so, you'll never know everything you need to about animals you buy. But healthy animals are cheapest to keep, so always keep that as a primary selection criterium. Littersize is an indication of that by the way. At least know what size litter your new stock came from and how good a mom she is/was.

I would like to know if and how long, will the heart pump after neck os snapped? I like your ways of dispatching the rabbits, I've done the bat behind the ears when I was younger. I think I might weld up that snapper you had bolted to the wall. What's your thoughts on heart pumping out blood after the snap? Thanks
@TheRabbitryCenter2 жыл бұрын
I'll include a video where we build one you might find it helpful. The heart will pump for approximately five minutes maybe less it will do its job and continue to pump the blood until the electricity left on the organ expires. I immediately cool down the heart kidneys liver and carcass in cold water I'll remove from the water rinse and clean any fur or blood dry and wrap with saran wrap for 24 hours before quartering and freezing kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g7WGoalnz8-9kY0.html

I prefer a hand pelet gun, Just like shown here you plase them on grass with food and pet / comfort them. Quickly pull a loded and ready to go pistol and pop. The rabit never feels a thing or has a clue about wahts about to happen. Just be sure to use steel or copper shot, lead is not something you want in your animal.

I love your channel, I'm a subscriber, but i definitely don't agree with this, it's b.s. people need to understand that living animals make the ultimate sacrifice, to provide us with nutrition. I kill and slaughter my rabbits the same way polyface farm does there's. No wasted meat and very humane. P.s. your video is awesome, like all the others. People need to understand the reality of food supply is all. I myself dread slaughter day, but it's reality is all.

If you want to produce high quality chemical free meat you have to get your hands dirty. It helps to remember your putting you and your families health first and these rabbits wouldn't be here if you weren't eating them. It also helps to not choose a breed you find absolutely adorable which you'd have trouble parting with. I assume Red Eyed Whites are popular for this exact reason. The dispatch is quick. I'll share a video that shows several different ways to dispatch a rabbit humanely. You can raise your animals in a comfortable environment and dispatch in a quick and pain-free manner. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kNJmm7N5ntaVgok.html

I've learned allot owning and raising my rabbits. I have learned allot about human behavior also. I will not let them go like this. Anyone out there reading this that has rabbits for their kids and it's a family member, get them fixed before you end up in my situation. Only animal that reproduces faster than humans and cockroaches. Man, I thought dispatch meant how to let them go in safe environment. Before this is over, I'm going to be a vegetarian I believe.
@TheRabbitryCenter3 жыл бұрын
Whether you’re a pet owner or producing meat this video will help you humanely put down your rabbit if it’s injured and you need to put it out of its misery or if you’re simply processing for meat. Either way It’s important that it’s quick and your rabbit experiences no fear. The word Dispatch has two meanings. Dispatch does mean send off quickly for example dispatch an ambulance but it also means kill. This KZfaq channel specializes in helping folks with their rabbitry and their backyard meat production so if that doesn’t interest you I would change the channel because you most likely won’t enjoy watching any of our videos especially if you are a pet owner. The responsible thing to do as a pet owner is to not allow your rabbits to breed. I think folks should eat food that makes them feel good. That said, if you want to be a vegetarian then you should be. Best of luck with your rabbits!

@@TheRabbitryCenter I never knew going into this for the kids that these animals have personalities and are therapeutic. They act like our dogs, part of the family, allot of work though, and if your not careful, they find ways no matter what to breed like rabbits. It reminds me of prison. I'd rather them take their chances with acasional cat, or hawk for 5 years of freedom than 7 years in a shitty cage in a yard, or worse, get bought up by some sick f at auction were they get their necks broken for the their little bit of zero nutritional value meat.
