For the curious. Humans have harvested bear meat since time began, both First Nations and non First Nations here in North America. Bears are in the pig family, meat is same as pork but more lean. Bears also reproduce like mice, never a shortage. Also take note, meat eating non hunters PAY OTHERS to kill, butcher and package their meat. Hunters do it themselves. Hunting is not a statement or a contest, it is a natural act used for sustenance.

Still a little early here in cold Manitoba for hunting bears but soon. Need the green grass to grow, that's the first thing they need to eat. Then the hunger pangs drive them. Here we can bait, don't need a camera. Just look at the size of the scat, it will tell you all you need to know. I know, why not a camera. I've seen to many cameras ripped off the tree played with on the ground. Do your homework and spend time in the bush is the only way to find what your looking for.

We will get out for a serious hunt once it warms up a little. And we’ll take a bear or two for the freezer. Maybe a grizzly but definitely a black bear. The meat is always delicious.

One of the big mistakes beginning bear hunters make is not during the hunt, its when it comes time to clean the meat. Many people are familiar with cleaning deer meat and bears arent much different until it comes to the fat. Make sure and get rid of every single piece of fat off the steaks, bear fat isnt like deer fat and a very small amount will spoil a pan of meat. Theres a reason they used to save all the bear fat and render it down for oil, its just different from deer fat and makes for a nasty taste in the pan. Im so picky I used paper towels to pluck every bit of it off I can before freezing.

I had a friend here in oregon about 20 years ago. Vietnam vet. Recon guy. I asked if he had hunted bear. He said no. In fact he said not much hunting was interesting once you've hunted the ultimate game. Also, that when you skin a bear, it looked too much like a human. His words. I've been content not to hunt bear since hearing Deggo say this. I've taken elk, dear, and antelope in montana. Been happy with that.

I'll be damned! A guide who gives a care bout us poors. I'm definitely downloading the ap. I build my own flintlock rifles and fowlers cause I can't afford a modern rifle. Ive made quite a few of 'em, but I've got one smooth bore and one rifle that I shoot constantly. Seems just about most of the elk I get it's cause I'm hunting grouse, then see, smell or just plain sense the elk and I ram a ball down on the shot and fill my elk tag. I'm disabled so gettin off the road ain't easy for me any more, so a grouse elk is always appreciated. Thanx for the knowledge. When I was learning blacksmithing everyone wanted to share their knowledge. It's nice to see some other highly skilled professions being shared. Again thanx.

Steve, thank you for sharing your bear hunting knowledge.I agree, I think that bear meat if prepared and cooked correctly taste a lot like pork. I also have to admit. that when I was in Korea as well as in Northern China, that I have eaten dog meat and that too can taste similar to some cuts of bear meat. I am sorry for all those that are offended or are going to get upset with me for eating dog but as they say, when in Rome, "do as the Romans do". I have been all over the world and to truly know and understand a people, I have tried to partake of the food of that country. Some good, some not so good, but at least I have tried to see for myself. Steve, stay safe out there, as always keep up the great work.
@claudiodominguez.
@claudiodominguez. 4 жыл бұрын
I totally agree that cultures are different and what's taboo in some is A okay in others. Also agree that to really get to know a different culture you need to "do as the Romans do". I also know that because of some cultures and their lack of common sense due to superstition, false beliefs and irrational thinking many animals are being hunted to extinction. These animals are unscientifically perceived to give the person that consumes certain parts of them an aphrodisiac effect. This same culture eats dogs commonly known as "Mans Best Friend". So knowing all of this I seriously question the true need to eat "Mans Best Friend". IMHO, everyone else is welcome to their own.

I've had good luck very early morning, just as the sun is coming up, and very late in the day as late as hunting hours allow.....the rest of the day....go do something else! You basically have 2-3 ours of hunting morning and evening. The rest of the day? Stay on a bait if you have nothing better to do. Glassing early spring grassy meadows is a little different story. I've seen them out all hours of the day, but it's right on the snow line as the first grass is turning green.

A lot of hunters don't know about this because they aren't aren't farmers who have rendered Pigs... Which is the second grossest job to deal with for both PIG and BEAR. You got to go get all the lard out of the bear I'm not an expert at it I always saw it done a few times and hated watching it and hated smelling it so I never had the stomach to do it myself but a butcher can handle that process for a bunch of bucks. I can feld dress and do the skinning & handle the butcherin part but that's it . If you take it to the butcher after that and have the lard removed you will have tasty bear.

I've never eaten bear and don't live in a part of the country that has bears so I'm curious about how they taste? Steve says it's the same as pork so does that mean there is such a thing as bear bacon?! Are the hams cured the way pork hams are?

Bear and even feral boar(wild pig) doesn’t have the same amount of fat as an industrially fattened domestic pig. I highly recommend you at least try elk, deer or whatever local ungulate you have. it’s like a richer sirloin steak. Bears are omnivores and their diet can change really change the taste. if they are feeding on fruit recently they can be sweeter. If they are mostly eating fish, carrion or human trash, they can taste more like that.

Imabeliever 2 Come to the northeast, we have plenty. I’ve always lived in a state/province that has bears so I forget there are places that don’t have them lol. I’m in your boat though. I’ve only ever tried them as sausage which makes anything taste good with all the added fat/seasoning. I want to try a back strap or roast so I can get a better idea of the taste and how I would want to use it before i plan to harvest one.

You sasquatch people need to move along and not even watch the hunting videos (which is what this channel started off as). No need for the stupid comments, it's legal and its neccesary to hunt predators just the same as deer species. Just look at the channel name and you should be able to figure out that there is hunting content on the channel.

Where? When, time of the year? What the brand name of the call? I bought a bear call 20 years ago i am guessing, but really didn't have anything come in. Of course back then we could only hunt for them 3 days before Thanksgiving. Now we have a early bow season, still the fall, that maybe a call might work here in Pennsylvania. We, my group of family and friends 7 total, are pretty successful bear hunters, but i always believed calling could increase our chances. So i am curious on your bear calling tactics...

Bears are not part of the pig family. Bears come from the Ursidae family, while pigs are part of the Suidae family. Both bears and pigs have the same infraclass, Theria, which includes all mammals the have placentas such as tigers and horses. Bears or the Ursidae family are close relatives of dogs, seals and skunks because they are all in the Carnivora order. The Ursidae family consists of five genera, including Ailuropoda, Helarctos, Tremarctos, Melursus and Ursus. The four species in the Ursus genus include American black bear, brown bear, polar bear and Asiatic black bear.
