This is a great stand, period! It's lightweight, climbs easy kzfaq.infoUgkxlQ7TDIrnnSXXbRgFFaxqwullRJJIuYAs and feels solid while in the tree. The seat is easy to fold up for climbing and sits comfortably for long days in the woods. The only downside I have is that it might be too comfortable, but I like napping in the tree anyway. This is the second Summit Viper I have owned. The old one is steel making it heavier, but this aluminum version is about 9-10 lbs lighter. I recommend buying a better fall harness as the one included is clunky and not super comfortable. I think it will work fine if you NEED to use it, but there are lots of other more comfortable options out there.

I just had a "flashback". The first time I ever saw a "saddle stand" was back in the late 70's. I was hunting on public ground next to the Mark Twain State Park in Missouri. I ran into a couple of fellow hunters from the nearby town of Perry who had put together saddle stands using safety belts from wrecked cars they got at a local auto salvage dealer. They didn't cost a dime and with a little "engineering" they had an effective and safe system. This stuff if LIGHT YEARS ahead of the stone age stuff we made up back then. Great job.

I am a tree climber by trade and my impression of this equipment as well as technique is that it is sketchy at best. For example, the leg straps on the saddle the just slide into the loops without any closure would absolutely never be used by an arborist. At 5:12 you are describing what we call spur climbing a tree, in which we use a flipline/lanyard like you have, and spurs on our feet to spike up the tree. I would love to see you use this technique without spurs. Also, the Prusik knot that you guys all agree "sucks" (okay sure mechanical ascension is easier) is just one type of friction hitch to serve that purpose, and is often not the best solution. Don't get me wrong, if this system works for you and the security of the equipment doesn't scare you, more power to you. All I can say is that no arborist I know would feel comfortable with this gear.
@robertb2444
@robertb2444 3 жыл бұрын
I noticed that also and thought, that's not safe! I work for the power company and am familiar with safe fall protection. Maybe I'm wrong but I think the leg straps need to be better connected than just slide into a slot! At least, for me to use it!

I always thought the saddle was a self climbing system like a climber stand. If you have to put up pegs or a ladder of some sort anyways I guess I struggle to see what the big benefit would be over a climber or even just a hanging stand with a good safety harness.
@lurchaddams4179
@lurchaddams4179 2 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert but I believe the big advantage is the system is compact and light weight to get in the deep in the woods without carrying a bunch of extra weight. Plus there is versatility to hop from depot to spot each day with minimal hassel.
@claymac7895
@claymac7895 2 жыл бұрын
@@lurchaddams4179 - But you have to go out ahead of time to hang steps or a ladder to get up to the saddle so I don’t see how it’s any easier than any other hang on stand or ladder stand. It’s not like you can just pick a tree on the fly and hunt it like you could with a climber stand.
@DrZiggyzoo1
@DrZiggyzoo1 2 жыл бұрын
@@claymac7895 You don't need to go out ahead of time. You can use climbing sticks you carry with you, rope ascending, and various other methods. Saddles are way lighter and easier to move around with than a climber or hang on stand with sticks.

The " real hunting world " I'm poor as dirt and I've never HAD to hunt dnr land. I choose to hunt it from time to time for the fun. Ive been knocking on doors for years and I have plenty of spots to hunt from urban to country. You got to get out there and put some time in the summer months looking for spots. Cant sit around all summer then come October look for a spot. Cant be lazy . Just saying.

I'm not saying hunting public is easy hunting. I' was just saying if you put enough time in knocking on doors in the summer time you can have enough spots where you dont have to hunt public land. Alot of people act like all they have to hunt is public land cause they are low on money and cant afford a big hunting lease. But if you put some effort to it in the summertime and stop and ask some land owners you can find properties to hunt privately. You would be surprised how many people say sure. Especially the old timers out in the country.

I guess that would be ok for some people but not for me. I just dont see myself hanging from a rope 20 plus feet above ground. Also add complexity of hooking all these lines up in the dark. Then if it's cold and wearing bulky clothes. Naw I will stick to climbing stand.

No more expensive then a quality mobile tree stand setup. I am not traditionally a mobile setup guy. I tend to have multiple preying stands on private land, however, they wear out and need replacing which can cost hundreds every several years. Just switched to the saddle and it now replaces all of those tree stands.

One thing I noticed on my Mantis saddle (must have been manufactured wrong) is the leg buckles are facing both in the same direction. Not a big deal but it definitely kinda rubbed me the wrong way, hope the guys from tethrd notice this and up the QC. This will be the first year in a saddle for me and looking forward to the mobility and ease of use for mobile hunting. Lots of benefits for the mobile hunter in my mind. Thanks for the great videos THP and keep them up.

Thanks for sharing this video with those two guys. I really like that last tip especially, but also how safe and versatile this is. I even though am afraid of unstable heights am thinking about getting a system either this year or for next fall. Got a trip in October to Idaho with my Dad (who wants a black bear) and my youngest brother (hoping for a mule deer) while I tag along and fish since I couldn't afford a license and tag, but after that I may have to get a system even though the Tethrd Mantis saddle by itself is $200. I know you pay for well made products. Must have filmed this prior to the ND whitetail and CO elk hunts since Aaron and Zach are there.

@attrezzopox
@attrezzopox 4 жыл бұрын
$500 once. It's $500 dollars for one system that you can set up and use on hunt day from any tree you'd be able to put a stand in. Stands get bulky. You usually have to pack them in and set them up before hunt day and even if you can pack them in day of they're too much of a pain in the ass to move to change your mind. If you hunt public land and you have to leave them up they're a liability. They can get stolen, lost, and you have to remove them and set them up every season. I'd much rather pay $500 for this one system then pay even $100 each for even 2 or 3 regular stands. The extra $$$ is paying for the luxury of having a truly portable hunting platform that works in literally any tree you could hunt and better in trees that a regular stand would be a pain in the ass to set up or even impossible. My understanding is you don't want to overhunt a stand. If you never get in the habit of setting up complicated stands and blinds you're not beholden to use locations that may not be your best spot on hunt day. I can totally see where having a very portable system like this would be a HUGE advantage by allowing you to change plans with the season as needed rather than to spend a crapload of time setting up a stand you're forced to use in conditions that don't make it a good spot. Last way to look at it, how much did you spend on your bow and what's you're average killshot distance with it? If you're in a wooded area probably 20-30 yards or less unless you're just bragging. Anyway, most archery classes say 40 yards and no further. Do you know how many bows you can find that cost less than $500 that will shoot accurately at 30 yards? The answer is LOTS and LOTS of bows will shoot that well for $250 but I bet you spent extra $$ to feel confident that you could make those shots. Well... This is a stand that costs more but will allow you to get where you need to be. No excuses, you can get there. All that money spent on that bow is going to shooting foam in the backyard unless you can get to where you need to be. So flipped another way, I'd buy a shitty used bow that can get me to 30 yards and spend the extra $$$ on a stand that will give me a target rather than spend big bucks on my bow to feel nice but on hunt day get stuck in a terrible location where I don't see diddily.
