I personally like the plasti dip better it lays better and wets out better. And less coats to wear 6+ coats are needed with hyper dip and not to mention $17 per can gets expensive real fast you get the original plasti and spray gloss over and it look just as good if not better.

Each product has it's place for sure. I had never tried Hyperdip until this video and wanted to see how it was. I did my wheels on my GMC Sierra video and they turned out great. Now I have used both products on wheels and trim. Both are good options for temporary color changes. A great option for someone leasing vehicle that you'd want to hand back in stock condition.

Before peeling the tape, did you run a razor along the edges of the grill and trim? How did it peel away so easy?
@Donslife
@Donslife 3 жыл бұрын
That’s the way this stuff peels. If two different kinds of surfaces come together but still have a big enough gap, it will rip perfectly in that spot. This is where the film is the weakest. This is while you don’t mask right up against the emblem, otherwise the film will be too thick where it bridges the gap.
@aaruhn
@aaruhn 3 жыл бұрын
It looks great! How is it holding up? I want to black out my chrome front grill, window trim, and maybe my emblems as well on my 2018 Accord. Trying to decide between this and Plastidip - I want to keep it as budget friendly as possible and I don’t know if shelling out a bit more money for the same result is worth it. What do you think is better, Plastidip or the Hyperdip? Thanks for making this video and I hope all is well with you.
@Donslife
@Donslife 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't had any issues with adhesion or the look of the finish. Plasti Dip is a good choice, it is a little more forgiving to apply and more readily available at local stores. However, the finish is a little dull compared to Hyperdip. I have plasti dip on the wheels and a little wipe of tire shine glosses it up, but then makes dust stick a little more. I would recommend buying a can of either product to practice on the emblems first. Then once you are familiar with how the process goes, you'll avoid mistakes on the trim. Trim could be tricky to peel depending how your weatherstripping is designed. For the Cadillac, I was lucky there was a hard edge (like and emblem) that the product laid onto thinner, allowing it to rip in that spot as I peeled very slowly

Looks great. My wheels are currently sprayed with the regular black and I'm wondering if it's worth it to switch it to the hyperdip shadow black. I've read that the hyperdip has a much smoother finish. Do you have any experience with regular plasti dip vs hyperdip?
@Donslife
@Donslife 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris! I have lots and lots of experience with Plasti Dip. Especially in black. The difference with Hyperdip is noticeable and it seems to present itself a little darker and more satin than flat like Plastidip. If you go back a few months on my channel you’ll see a Plastidip removal video for my GMC Sierra Denali using a pressure washer. One important thing to mention: Hyper Dip’s instructions state that it is not compatible with Plastidip, so I recommend starting fresh with whatever you choose. I decided to give Hyperdip a shot since claims to be better for vehicles. I forgot to mention, the escalade wheels are 4yr old Plastidip and in person look dull compared to the Hyperdip, but time will tell. Consider subscribing if not already! ✌🏼

Maybe I missed it but why did you overspray on the top of the grill and in certain areas around the emblems why did you have to peel it why couldn’t you just mask it ?
@Donslife
@Donslife 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, masking tape is usually too thick that the hyper dip bridges the gap (now smaller) that the emblem adhesive creates. Once everything is dry and you try to peel, it is risky and will probably pull at the emblem coating and come off

Spraying the product takes longer due to drying between coats. How much you want to mask dictates overall clean up time. any light overspray can be wiped off. Any thick overspray can be peeled off. If you like this kind of DIY stuff, it can all be done in one day no problem. People Plasti Dip entire cars. I haven't done that.

It is possible to scratch it. Normal environmental things like heavy rain, snow, mud, bugs don’t seem to harm it. It is a low cost coating that can be peeled off and redone if it did scratch. My wife curbed a wheel with dip on it. It peeled it off in that spot, so I sanded the rim smooth and redid the dip on it.

It is relatively easy provided you apply it with the right thickness. If you run into light spots, they make a dissolver to help. Light overspray can be wiped off the next time you hand wash the vehicle.

Absolutely beautiful but how long does it last? Can it last through car washes and detailing? In extreme heat and cold?
@Donslife
@Donslife 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I answer this question a lot. The product is from south Florida so if done right, it should resist heat. Applying it in high humidity can lead to adhesion problems. I live in Canada and I haven’t had any issues with -40°F and as for extreme heat, we only get up to 90°F where I live. I have used it on items that I wanted to customize temporarily. As long as the preparation is done well, it should last. If you have a spot get damaged by a rock or something, it can be repaired by peeling it off and redoing and is inexpensive. Good option for a leased vehicle too. I recommend proper automotive paint and clear coat for anything you know you want to be more permanent.

So how bad was your overspray on the onmasked portion of the car and the one next to it?
@Donslife
@Donslife 3 жыл бұрын
Non existent, the particles are much larger than spray paint. I have used plasti dip for years and if you control your spray pattern with proper distance, you may be surprised at how controlled you can be. If there was any, it would be so light, it would be dry-fall (not sticky) and just wipe or wash off. Extra masking never hurts though.

@Donslife
@Donslife 3 жыл бұрын
If the surface was prepped properly to create good adhesion, then a car wash should be okay. In the past I usually wand wash or hand wash, but you would need pretty high pressure to peel it off. As for fading, I haven’t noticed any yet. With the Plasti Dip product I would treat it with some tire shine product if it looked faded over the years.

What is the final finish like ??? Is is flat, ultra flat, eggshell or satin ??? I would like to restore some very faded black grill inserts and side moldings. The original factory finish was an eggshell finish. Could this product reproduce that look ??? Car is 20 years old and factory replacement parts are no longer available. From the video images, it looks like the finish I want. Thanks. PS-- How durable is this product ??? Will it eventually wear off or is it permanent ???
@Donslife
@Donslife 3 жыл бұрын
The final finish of ‘shadow black’ is mostly satin. They make others like piano black, metallic and gloss too. It is more of a peelable paint so it won’t wreck anything by accidentally overspraying it. I personally have only tried it on wheels, grills, emblems and window trim. I don’t know how well it would work on plastic moldings that have a texture. Assuming you could degrease it and clean it well, it might work. It might be best to try Plasti Dip first (cheaper) as a test. If it works well, but the then peel it off and go with the color / finish you want with hyper dip. The longest I have had Plasti dip is 7+ years on my inner grill and emblems on a 2013 gmc sierra denali. Sold it a few months ago, all still intact. Bugs didn’t wreck the grill finish either. Remember Hyperdip is newer and intended more for automotive so it should be just as good if not better than Plasti Dip. I only use these products when I want a temporary color change and when I want it back to stock, I can peel it off or the next owner can if I sell.
