In this video I show you how you can find old home sites with a little help from plants!? Yes you heard me right...plants! A long time ago old pioneers and homesteaders used imported plants from Europe among other places to put in their yards , fast forward 100+ years later the homestead is gone and whats left are the remains of the plants that once complemented the house. To locate an old home site all you have to do is look for the plants that were left to grow. In this video i show you the plants that were popular back in the day so you can identify an old location! I hope you enjoy the video.
Also Give my buddy Coyote Works a visit at his youtube channel, I promise you will love it! He looks for old home sites while over-landing and camping in central Oregon! Its vary fascinating! Tell him Dirt Bandit Outdoors sent you!

Thank you, I didn't think it was going to turn out well but it did. Absolutely Casey, any time! Your right to look for any clue.

In pa, in early spring, daffodils and tiger lilies mark the spot. Plus your random lone WAY over grown pines. Marks of the past❤️ I love this topic and this video 👏

Thank you so much. It was one of those topics where I couldn't believe it took me so long to realize I needed to make it.

There's an area west of town going up a gulch that has black walnut trees. Of course others have sprouted downhill from there. Don't see many English walnut trees in town.

Great clues Brian. Also, periwinkle can be known as creeping myrtle, and vinca minor depending upon your region of the country. I also look for Ajuga and creeping Charlie as other ground covers and lilacs, daffodils, or tulips in the spring. Old windbreaks or any plants that look out of place.

Thank you for the input man. I was going to do daffodils but they aren't blooming yet. Maybe a part 2, lol.

Don't forget my favorite old home site plant, irises. I collect antique irises.

Here in Wisconsin we look for the old plum, Crabapple trees. The Rhubarb plants are another great indicator also. Nice video Bandit! Stay safe and all the best!

Another good indicator is when driving on an old rural road, if you see where a driveway culvert is and there is no house, there may have been an old house there

I have learned to use this method in the past. I sometimes pull over and mark that spot on gaia gps and later when I go home I load the 1900 or 1930 map on gaia and see if I come up with anything in that spot.

Great video - I also look for the anomalies in the woods, but I never knew exactly which ones to look for. In CT, grapevines are a good indicator, as are onion bulbs if you happen to find them in the hole with a target. PS - the camera and sound quality is excellent, what are you using? I recently swapped iPhones and I'm unhappy with what I have since I cannot cover one of the microphones with a wind muff.

Thank you. I'm actually using a canon m50 with a rode microphone. For me it's worth it unless it rains but I'm not going detecting in the rain anyway, lol. I just wanted better video and audio for my vids.

@@DirtBandit thanks so much! I really do need to invest in a solid DSLR this year, as much as I’ve resisted it for the last year and a half lol. I’ll be watching your videos! Looks like you have some nice content.
