To develop your game in darts, you often need to start at the drawing board and for that are our practise and training drills.
Matthew Edgar and Andy Cornwall discuss all the key components of a successful darts practice and offer lots of good training tips on how you can play better darts.

Cracking video again. A few bits I've heard before, but the rest is a little new, can't wait to implement it into my practice routine 👍🏼🎯

I like the term I used in my PMVA (NHS restraint training) course. "Practice makes permanent". I think it's relevant here, also.

Great video, I've sort of identified the main points of this recently myself. I've been a decent pub player for years but only recently got a board up in my own house. Started playing more regular and found my form just dropped like a stone. Now realised it was aimless practice often not in the same conditions, just playing about basically. I'm now trying a more focussed approach, so this week I'm working on my aim point and accuracy so i can repeat the habit of picking a target and delivering the dart consistently. Little warmup, 30 mins working on aiming, couple of legs of 501 at the end. Simple but find I'm enjoying it more

I like this, sometimes when we practice we get caught throwing aimlessly. I still do sometimes. A game i made up is pretending I'm in a match and start off with 170 in 12 darts to ease in for the first leg, then 2 x 121 in 9 darts, 2 x 170 in 9 darts, then same again but reduce to 6 and finally end on needing to check out in 3 darts. So builds the intensity. Sometimes if i go out in 3 darts for 121 I'll give myself a life haha. Usually need them if you get to 170 in 3 lol.

Current practice: Round the world to get loose - if you miss multiple darts in a turn, start back at 1. “Cricket Count up” type game for some big # + treble focus - 20-15+ bull, must get 3+ “marks” per turn or go back to the previous number. If you “fall” past 20 you lose. “33% type game” - 20-1 on doubles, even numbers only. 3 darts at a double, if you miss, go back a number. If you hit multiple doubles, you lock in a new “floor”. If I complete those quickly enough I reward myself with best of 5, 501 matches against the computer. Difficulty is set with their avg = to my first 9 but I get the darts to start. If I have bonus time and know I shouldn’t just do 501 games, I’ll play 121 for outs practice. Also of course # of misses, marks and darts to get a “floor” respectively all can be tweaked for difficulty. I’ll change up soon enough I’m sure when I get bored but the routine will usually have similar elements.

To get loose, don't focus on anything, think of it as stretching, like football you stretch your muscles before you kick a ball.

I'm relatively new to darts and I have a board (good lighting, surround, good board (Mission Ifinity) etc) and I mostly WFH. I do find I can go and do 10 minutes here and there but like you say, it could be detrimental. Now I spend much longer in the evenings but - I WANT TO - throw for these 10 minutes, I enjoy it. BUT... If I just throw and expect to get 180s that's when you start getting frustrated. What works for me is just doing a quick round the clock and see where I get to. It warms me up and I don't mind if I fail - I know my accuracy improves and I'm then able to go back and magically it's better. If I miss the target, I'll often just care about grouping the darts, that seems to help me and takes my mind away from the miss - doing this my stance takes care of itself. The other issue is - what is practice? Throwing a dart or swinging a club is 'practice' but that's the physical side. When you're in the honeymoon phase you want to watch videos - just like this. Learn checkouts so you're not embarrassed when you're at the oche and that puts you off. That's practice too. So some people may be better watching some videos in that 10 minute break (I mean from work, not throwing darts) and getting your fix there, rather than filling it with counterproductive practice. You've also got to take gifted professionals with a pinch of salt, try their darts (I actually recently picked up a set of Matt's Loxley TV ones - good offer), but when Gary Anderson says he focuses on trebles - that doesn't mean it's best for me. What I've found works is, sometimes I do want to be stubborn. So playing the singles games on various apps and then a game against a bot, works well for me. But then I can move this on by only counting the singles that go where I intend them. If I fluke a double, no, doesn't count. Or I'll say I want 3 darts in this section before I move on. Then there's doubles training and games like Bob's 27. These you don't stick at that number, you move on and I think that's important as you don't get to try again and again in a match. But you do need some time to focus on your technique. I've made the most improvement not walking up to the board and the first thing I do is try and hit 180 - it's meaningless. It's not a measure of how good I'm throwing that day. I get straight into my warm up (around the clock or similar) where I don't track it, I just complete it. Then I do something where I track my score and I try to make it more difficult. If I'm playing a bot and I'm aiming for treble 20, only 20s, 5s and 1s count. I don't want treble 18 helping me get to the checkout faster against a 30 average bot. It doesn't help. So I don't track those darts. But I'm realistic and know you don't hit 60 every time. This approach has helped me chill out the most and let my throw and grip just develop, rather than worrying about it and thinking I'm getting worse. No, it's the first throw of the day. I'm nearly 40, it takes me a bit of time to warm up in anything. Drinking pints, lifting weights, playing CoD, Golf... Not pissing off the missus. Darts is no different.

I find it hard to get off the board both during a food spell or a bad. I regularly throw from about 8pm to 2, 3 or sometimes 4 am. Exhaustion and reminder of work in the morning forces me to stop. I find even a stop of less than a minute can stop bad spells. I'd like to throw everyday but after 6 hours or so the day before, I don't want to.

Hello, I just started Dart and I've been trying to play with my own efforts for about 4 months, I want to buy a good set and I like the MGV Exact and Aspire series. But I'm undecided about the weight, there are those who tell me to take a light 21g 22g. For those who say 23G would be more standard. What do you recommend the set 24G that I am currently using?
@missiondarts

We would always recommend to start heavier and work your way lighter over time.

Is there a difference when tapered darts and bull nose darts enter the board as in the angle 🤔

Just keep upping the ante so when you can do 'round the board in 40 darts, your next target is 35, then 30 etc

A great practice game that made me play so much better in league matches was this: 121 in 9 darts. Always start on the number you ended on the next time you play. If you fail a number, you don't go back. This game is like a life time challenge. When you reach numbers that are difficult for you, the double chances can be pretty rare, and that is exactly what helped me get better. I got a similar feeling like in a league match because I really wanted to hit the double to reach the next score so I learned to focus and throw proper darts. I have now reached 386 which is crazy difficult for me to beat so I don't play it that much anymore. Btw if you play this you can't just throw darts at the board and then suddenly when you hit a 140 you tell yourself "ok I just started there". That's cheating.
