One of my favorite bursts of legato madness, was Edward Van Halen ripping through the unaccompanied portion of the legendary "FOOLS," before launching into the main riff. I love the fluidity, but he makes it sound super aggressive when he palm mutes a couple portions of it.

The issue I have is not hammer on pull off on high E, but string changes and HO/PO on other strings. For instance if I want a descending 3nps pull-off major scale, that is some tough stuff for me ATM.

Thanks for the lesson, uncle Ben! What puzzles me though, after all these years, is the ever eluding Holdsworthian, all hammer-ons legato. I never really understood what people meant with it and I have not found a proper explanation/demonstration of it. Whenever I try to do it, it just seems impossible to do. The amount of energy required, even if I try to maximize economy of motion, makes everything so cumbersome, that achieving Holdsworthian fluency, cleanliness and articulation seem impossible. Any insights?

Practicing lines doing all hammers really does feel like torture at first, cause your fingers aren’t used to being responsible for keeping your notes at consistent volumes. That’s the picks job haha. It took me a long time, but I’m almost to the point where I can play picked lines and legato at the same volume. I’d recommend practicing slowly of course, but focus on making sure you’re listening to the notes and striving to make each one as loud as the last. And hitting the strings with the tips of your fingers instead of the pads. Over time, the speed will come.
