G. Kannan. I am 85. I was brought up in carnatic music background. My wife was trained in Carnatic Music and all people on her side are proficient in Carnatic Music. Though I have good interest in music I am not good at it since, I do not have the basic aptitude for music. At least on one occasion I was unceremoniously asked to stop singing. Still I continue to sing. Incidentally I happened to see your first video. It was so interesting that right from 12 noon until 3 PM I did not leave the computer sitting listening to all volumes of your video It is a wonderful, marvellous and I can confidently say yours is a new chapter in the field of Carnatic Music. God bless you.

Glad it helped! You could consider taking the 'Alankaras' course where we have covered all the 7 Talas of Carnatic music. It would give you a very good grip over rhythm. You can find this course on the VoxGuru app.

You need to listen to the song many many times and then start singing it by playing it in the background. Initially play a bit larger and later reduce the volume significantly to hear yourself. I am not an expert, but this is what i do.

Thanks for the video. Is there a video that showcases different songs whose first syllable is not on a SAMAM but actually lies between two SAMAMs. If the first syllable were to fall on a beat then that beat is defined as SAMAM and as such beging a rhythmic cycle. Following this definition, this beat can never be the 2nd or 3rd beat of a rhythmic cycle. Am I correct?

I suspect a song can be seen as a mixed bag of syllables with some falling on beat and others falling between. Given this view it is possible for the first syllable to be on a beat or to fall between two beats. If it falls on a beat then that beat is defined as SAMAM. If it falls between two beats then the beat preceding the syllable is defined as SAMAM. I don't know what name is given to the beat that follows the syllable. Am I correct?
