Thanks, the scales fit so well.Question. I there a mental shortcut ? i.e. the ii chord base starts on the miii, the V chord base starts a half tone up, and the I starts on its own root..?

I would try to use a simple lick that you can easily transpose or a minor triad or the first four notes of a minor pentatonic

Whoa dude thank you! I’ve been trying to understand melodic minor more but I’m struggling. Your video helped me a lot. Can you help me understand why F melodic minor works over D7b5?
@EdArmGuitar
@EdArmGuitar 4 жыл бұрын
I'm glad it helped you :) So basically Melodic minor scale contains 7 different chords and you can use only one scale for all 7 chords (how cool is that) For example F melodic minor has Fm6, G7sus b9, Abmaj7#5, Bb7#11, C9b13, Dm7b5, E7alt. I need to make a video on this.

@@EdArmGuitar Thank you for explaining the possible chords that are networked with F melodic minor. It really helps! Problem is I know the scale but I still cannot use it the way jazz people should.

@@meulia just learn a bunch of patterns based on melodic minor scale. Learn triads, for example in fmm Bb triad and C triad.

It works because the diatonic key for Dm7b5 is Eb major (7th mode). Playing F melodic minor over Dm7b5 gets all the Eb major pitches but contains a natural 2 (E natural). It's a nice way to get that natural 2 over the half dim.

Hi great video. Why does the f melodic minor work on the d7b5?
@EdArmGuitar
@EdArmGuitar 6 ай бұрын
F melodic minor scale fits the Dm7♭5 chord because the chord’s notes are in the scale. This scale can be used over seven different chords, just like the C Major scale over 7 diatonic chords in C major

Hey Ed , I have a question. How about arpeggios, what do you suggest to use over 2 5 1 progression. tks !
@EdArmGuitar
@EdArmGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
There are few levels: 1. can play chord tones 2. Can play upper tones 3. Can use ANY arpeggio/triad from melodic minor scale. Will make another video on this subject, need at least 10min to explain :) I hope that helps

@@EdArmGuitar that will be a great class ! Arpeggios are essencial for improvisation. A friend says that a great improviser is a great arpeggios player.

Awesome. I have a question for anyone. What is the theory behind the choice of scale over the particular chord? How would I apply this technique to other keys or 2-5-1s? I don't know WHY the f melodic minor scale is choose for the 2, or why Ab is for the 5. Once I understand that I can use this in any situation.

There are 7 chords that you can play over one melodic minor scale. Simple :) Just need to know these chords.

@EdArmGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
@@raktim369 ok :) So m69 is the chord that comes from the melodic minor scale C d Eb f G A b C (C Eb G A) It feels more like 'home' when you arrive to it. So most of the old jazz tunes or even songs used it as the ending chord. Try using Cm7 instead and you'll see which works better. (You'll probably need some time to get used to the sound of you never used it before) also it works better with the jazz standards melodies when comping. Does that make sense to you ?
