For years I have tried to teach by emphasising a pentatonic core ... but you have in this simple structure emancipated every single chromatic step. The examples are clear, contextualised, and graded to allow easy absorption. Bravo!

This method of looking at musical notes available to improvise with is so much better than concentrating on scales. Focus on the chord that is currently playing in the song, emphasize the 1, 3, 5 of that chord and throw in a sprinkling of all the other notes (b7, 6, 4, etc) that relate to that chord. I wish someone had taught me that years ago. Screw scales.
@felipealvarez71134 жыл бұрын
If you wanna become good, you have to know both things. This method of feeling the notes, and also how scales work and practice them. Arpeggios are also good to practice.
@olivergoltz77574 жыл бұрын
As a guitarist I agree with you except for the last two words. Combining the skills of this video with scales is the key to my humble opinion.
@jameslivesey83224 жыл бұрын
well you can always use chord scales ala the berklee way. so for example on I7 in blues that is a dominant chord so you want a mixolydian sound: 1, 9 or #9, 3, optional 11, 5, maj6, flat 7 and you can do that with any chord. it's just a scalar system designed to explore the extensions which you want to focus on in your expression of that particular chord.

Amazing content. I've been practicing solidly focusing on triads (1,3,5) and seventh chord tones (1,3,5,b7/7) pushing my soloing to a new level (I used to just stick to one scale previously and it just didn't seem to fit, especially on the changes). I like this video as it shows all the additional notes or flavours. I was sustaining b9 b3 #11 but prefer this method of just passing through these notes (stick on a b9 and your ears will hurt!) As these melodies are single note, this content really works excellently on guitar, so not just for the kewl kats with wind instruments.

Really love the idea of connecting food ingredients and notes; really loved the concept of using all 12 notes of the chromatic scale, but in an orderly fashion and i also dug the concept of doing microtonal 3rds between minor and major. Yet, one question remains unanswered : I really love the guitar parts, anything to say about these ?

Wait till you try banana and curry Swedish style, will have to think about what notes they represent. But good idea. When I come up with a new backing track, I typically go through the scale and figure what notes work and the emotion they portray, write those notes down as an improvisation guide.
