Not at all. When I was very young, I. took piano lessons, so at least I know about music theory. Playing scales on the guitar is really getting to be fun, especially the way you show how you do it. It is really appreciated

What about using 3 fingers like Matteo Mancuso?
@tesla-j9p
@tesla-j9p 26 күн бұрын
If the line is ternary then I think a ternary fingering works well. If the line is binary then I think a binary fingering is more suitable. However, it does depend on the context of the piece like what comes before and after the particular phase.

When I was a young man I was able to get a good tremolo speed. Now I am old and I find I can't get the speed necessary for a good tremolo. It seems m and a fingers are the weakest. I feel if I could improve those it would greatly improve my speed. I am already familiar with the idea of planting so I will just work at it and see if I can get my tremolo back.

Hi Margaret, of course. I like the Diatonic Major and Minor Scales by Segovia. It's a short booklet, inexpensive, and timeless. Hope that helps.

I just finished my 1st year of classical guitar studies. I found myself naturally tilting my wrist when moving from free strokes to rest strokes, but my teacher says we absolutely need to fix that cause I sometimes loose the position and don't know where my fingers are anymore and miss bases. It just feels natural to me and do not really want to fix that...I'd rather fix the positioning and base problem. Any thoughts or advice on this?
@tesla-j9p
@tesla-j9p 25 күн бұрын
It’s hard to give you an exact answer without being able to see your position, and of course we want to respect your teacher’s opinion as well. A lot of it comes downs to one’s school of thought, as different teachers will have different perspectives. Perhaps if you want to keep the tilt when playing rest stroke, you could change the angle of your free stroke so that the transition from one to another is not so dramatic. Essentially find a middle ground. Hope that helps.

Two questions--first, I notice when playing scales you're playing 4 strokes on each note. But when playing single notes at high speed, coordination between left and right hand becomes more important--hope you might address that. Second, my particular problem--my i and m nails are rather hooked. For that reason, it is difficult for me to control the release of the string from my nail. If you have any suggestions (except to cut off my nails) I'd love to get any tips. BTW, my wrist has always dropped--seems to be the old style, like Segovia. Part of this I think is that using the Dynarette cushion doesn't get the neck high enough, so I'm compensating with my wrist. I think it doesn't look nice, but I haven't injured myself--yet. Good luck with the channel!

@@StevenBornfeld Hi Steven, yes playing single notes at high speeds does require more coordination. You could maybe work on small speed bursts that incorporate both hands to help build up the coordination. As far as the hooked nails go, I know that it can be quite a challenge for guitarists with that nail shape. I do know that some people will heat up a metal spoon and use it to help reshape the nail making it more flat and less hooked though I’ve never had to do it myself, it could be something to experiment with carefully.

@@tesla-j9p I tried the spoon thing (and I tried the ball end of a tuning fork). I did burn myself slightly until I figured out how to hold the tuning fork. It does work, but the nails reverted to their original shape in a couple of hours. If I get desperate I'll have to go to a salon for acrylic nails--been trying to avoid that. Thanks for the feedback!

When assessing speed is that by quarter note or eighth note or 16th note?
@tesla-j9p
@tesla-j9p 26 күн бұрын
Good question. I suppose it could depend on the context of the piece you’re working on, but in general, I would say it’s the quarter note and then subdividing it from there.

is it important to wear long sleeves?
@tesla-j9p
@tesla-j9p 26 күн бұрын
I always wear a sleeve but not for speed. Usually, it’s so the oils from my skin don’t damage the finish of the guitar over time. Also, some people like to wear a sleeve so the arm can move more easily when changing positions. It allows the arm to slide more freely.
