Today's Workshop:
We will be discussing the different qualities of base (carrier) oils and their shelf life.
The reasoning behind dried herbs and what they bring to the table that will compliment oil infusions for medicinal purposes. Formulating a recipe for infused oils, labeling, straining and storing the infusions that have reached their steeping point. We will be creating a soap recipe that challenges what ails us. We will also decide which method of infusing oils and herbs work best.
If you love infused oils, you always will. So many choices, so many reasons, so many recipes, so what are we waiting for? Let’s get soaping!
Thanks for Watching, Liking and Subscribing and Happy Crafting!

Thanks you for the guidance to be willing to understand the oil structure to match the the herbs to the project. Be it dog or soap , the shelf life of each , to maximize the the herb’s potential of 2-3 infusion. Great job. As a melatonin senior with 37 years vest in self, family care with herbal tthis , that . The confusion of up , down never balanced my goals . Love the cards , tagging of the jar. Just a delicious dessert to be with you. Compassion to you in your journey my dear one. I don't remember the last time I made a hot or cold process soap without adding an infused oil. It applies to beard oil, body oil, body butters etc. I feel as though it has become a finished product at that point. Explaining it seems like a long dragged out process, but once you understand it, it seems like you just want to learn more. Remembering all the qualities is going to take time, but it can happen.

Thank you for your video. I am looking at making my own soap to improve the health of me and my family by cutting out chemicals. You did a very good job and I hope you consider making more videos in the future. I was wondering what sources you found most reliable for learning about the properties of the various oil types and of the herbs? There is so much information online and in books but I find a lot of contradictions. Thank you and I hope you are well!
@WhiteDormouseArtisanSoaps

Aimee, thank you for your comment. Most of my oil property sources come from the love of soap making itself. I am truly inspired by it and everything it stands for and it sounds like you are too! Oils and butters are the main bulk of bath and body products and it’s hard to remember every one of them. If I turn my head once, I will forget everything I read so I make lots of notes to reflect back on. I purchased a few books on herbal infusions and essential oils, healing properties and the books helped a lot, but there’s just so many. I also look on line and spend quality time seeing some of the same things constantly. I find a lot of oils and herbs do many of the same things and partner with each other. Many with offer hydrating qualities, reducing fine lines and age spots, moisturize and provide anti-inflammatory qualities and so on. Others help with acne, eczema, and contribute to hair growth and full body. My advice would be to start with many of the oils I mentioned. Write down each one and make a highlighted list you can reflect back on. When your ready to make your recipe, ask yourself what your goal is for this soap. It’s like grocery shopping. What do you want to achieve in this soap product? Who are you catering to and what are their needs? Then grab your grocery list with all of your oil qualities and start preparing your recipe. When you label your soap, you will want to mention what the soap is and how it will contribute to helping others with their skin care needs. Your oil qualities will be the answer. Don’t forget other additives like root powders, essential oils and herbs also compliment your soap product in many ways so write those down too. Good luck and don’t hesitate to keep asking and keep learning. I will make more tutorials, but want to make sure its content that will be very useful. Thank you for visiting.

I for the first time attempted to make arnica oil it smells nice and helps me with my pain I have chronic pain on back and legs and hands etc surgery on all of those. Last surgery was for trigger finger and mother in law said arnica helps with inflammation etc so I gave it a try. Now I’m just trying to see how to make a cream with it. @WhiteDormouseArtisanSoaps
@WhiteDormouseArtisanSoaps 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Mary, research a little on non-comedogenic oils. Type that in and start there since you are looking for message. The oils you choose will not only need value and reason, but if they are non-comedogenic that would help those with problem skin. You will find a list of carrier oils that can be used that will not cause issues with acne. Some may be fractioned coconut oil, hemp, sweet almond and much more. If this doesn't work for your recipe, that's alright too. Make sure to check the shelf life of the carrier oil so you can get at least 1 to 2 years out of the product. Next, look up oils that absorb quickly, slowly and at a medium rate. This will help you decide if you want them at the top of your skin for cuts and scars etc. or medium where they will provide a glow and sheen, or fast absorbing to penetrate deeply. Next, look up herbs and flowers to infuse with. For muscle you can try infusing with ginger, arnica, goldenrod and more. Once infused and ready to create the product you can add cinnamon, cayenne, clove, peppermint, menthol and camphor which do very well in the recipe for aches and pains and muscle. I know it’s a lot of research. Take your time and start from scratch. It may take you all day or 2 days to come up with a recipe. Once you fill your jar, keep in warm dark area. I have a heat box set to 100 degrees. If you don’t have that just close the lid, tuck away and turn each day or every other for 4 to 6 weeks. Time goes fast. Write everything down. Research the items and document their uses to keep in your files.

Hi, I'm new to your channel. I know that this video is 2 years old, but if possible, I have a question. Why didn't you have coconut oil in this explanation? I've been in soap making for a few months and this information is wonderful. Thank you so much for your time and for sharing this great information.
@WhiteDormouseArtisanSoaps
@WhiteDormouseArtisanSoaps 2 жыл бұрын
Hello there and thank you for chiming in and visiting the channel. I am assuming you might be referring to the wheel of oils that can be considered for infusing and you would like to know why coconut oil was not in the mix especially since coconut oil is used so many times in soap making. There are two different textures of coconut oil. Hard and liquid which would be fractionated coconut oil. When infusing, we would use fractionated coconut oil and we could have added this to the wheel. The shelf life is about two years and up meaning it takes a long time before it goes bad so it would make a great oil. We use a good amount of hard coconut oils in soap making up to 30% in a recipe and too much can be drying to the skin. In the tutorial, my goal was to make dog shampoo so I did not need more coconut oil since I was going to use hard coconut oil already. Fractionated coconut oil is usually not used in making hard soap, but please add fractionated coconut oil to the list. If I were to use fractionated coconut oil as one of my oil infusion choices, I would also need to have a reason and a recipe ready to go. I would use fractionated coconut oil and possibly combine it with two other oils to create a perfume or message oil, makeup remover, lip gloss, use to dilute essential oils, create a recipe for hair, and after shave. Add fractionated coconut oil to salves, balms, sugar scrubs and more. BTW you can use fractionated coconut oil at 1-100% As you get the feel of infusing oils for whatever your project may be, you will begin to expand your knowledge on all the beautiful and valuable products that can be made over and above soap making. Eventually, you may consider making a soap specifically for use on the face only or a message oil. You may even start to dabble in studying about comedogenic and non-comedogenic oils and which ones have the potential to clog pores. This would be a lot of fun and so important in your soap making adventures as hard coconut oil has a rating of 4 which means it is fairly high that it would clog pores in a person prone to acne breakouts while fractionated coconut oil ranks zero so its wonderful for leave on products. There is a list of non-comedogenic oils if you would like to look into it. If you ever decide that hard coconut oil is not going to benefit your particular recipe especially for a facial soap, you can replace it with Babassu which is non comedogenic. You can see how we can play with these oils to balance our recipes and to provide the best possible solution for all skin types. It’s a choice that some customers might be looking for and you can offer those products by letting customers know in your labeling, ingredients and a good write-up. It sure would help those who don’t have the knowledge like you do. I hope this helped and best wishes in your adventures.

Hello! thank you for your comment. I have to be honest, I walked into the book store and I was dizzy with all the books on herbs and essential oils. So that I don't put you in a situation spending money on loads of books that read very similar to each other, I would recommend visiting the isle and get one book on types of herbs and what they contribute to healing, another on how to use essential oils including measurements, and another on natural healing. These types of books may read some of the same things and yet still different. Aromatherapy for Beginners is good. I was already making soap, so learning about the different oil qualities is a very good start. You may not be able to take it all in, but you will learn and the books are there to remind you. Move onward to herbs and how they contribute to the oils. You will than learn about essential oils since you might want to add those to your recipe. It's a lot of self learning, but if you are into this, you will enjoy teaching yourself. A friend of mine gave me over 100 Bay Leaves from his back yard tree. I prepared them first and they are now infusing in witch hazel and another in olive oil and one more in a mixture of glycerin and water. Why did I do these three concoctions? I am preparing to make room spray, another recipe for beard oil and one more for soap. When the leaves are broken they smell so beautiful. When infused for one month to 3 months, their fragrance is natural and becomes stronger. Best of luck in your journey.

Great video. How much oz of infused oils would you add to a soap recipe ?
@WhiteDormouseArtisanSoaps
@WhiteDormouseArtisanSoaps 4 жыл бұрын
Hello, there are a few carrier oil soap making charts that you can find on line. They will give you the values of most oils used. The chart will also tell you what the oil brings to a recipe. For instance, Coconut Oil brings lather, fluffy bubbles, is high in cleansing, but can dry skin so 15 to 50% can be used. Cocoa Butter is lotion-like, helps with lather, but you would not want to use so much because it’s a brittle butter so 5 to 30% can be used. I usually don't go higher than 5% These numbers will need to be added to a recipe ratio calculator which every soap maker should be using to formulate their recipe. soapcalc.net Many times this all sounds confusing. You will need to write a few things down during research and have soapcalc up and ready to punch in some number values. Soapcalc will define what you typed into your recipe and let you know if you created one that would make for an all-around sturdy bar with nutritious values for the skin. As far as the infusions, they are like the salt and pepper to your scrambled eggs. The herb infusion inside the oil should complement each other. If your recipe is a lip balm and you need Olive Oil and an herb that helps with bug bites, then choose the oil needed to not only help your skin heal, but an herb that has infused in that oil that helps heal the bug bite. They complement each other. The value is still the same in your recipe. It's the value that will create a perfect bar soap or product. I hope that answered the question.

I brought fresh sage that i want to add to castor oil for a hair oil . Can I get your opinion. How should I infuse the sage into the castor. Crockpot or another method
@WhiteDormouseArtisanSoaps
@WhiteDormouseArtisanSoaps 3 жыл бұрын
There will always be different opinions on how to infuse herbs, spices, plant leaves and any other desirable botanical. Hot process for faster use of the product or slow process where it could take time and patience anywhere from 3 to 8 weeks where the outcome is medicinally more beneficial. I have had Bay Rum leaves from a tree sitting in a carrier oil for 6 months now. The fragrance from the leaves become more pronounced with each week sitting until I can find a recipe. Determine how fast you need the castor oil infusion. That will help you decide which process will be better. You will need dry herbs. If your herbs are fresh right now, allow them to wilt for up to two days. If there is any sign of water, this could cause rancidity so they may need to sit longer. I have a second batch of moist bay leaves just sitting in a large tray and with each day they become dry and crunchy. Once the herbs are ready, take time to sterilize your jar and caps, place herbs in jar ½ way depending on the herb. If this were flax seed I would add less. In your case, depending on jar size try half way. Now fill jar with your castor oil almost to the top and stir, fill the remaining oil topping it off leaving at least an inch of headspace to allow herbs to expand and this will also leave room to turn the jars to agitate the herbs daily. Cover herbs completely with castor oil. Be sure to keep them completely submerged under the oil to reduce the risk of the oil going rancid or moldy. Label jar and set in a cool, dark location away from direct sunlight. For the crock pot method, you will follow the same steps, filling crock pot with water until half the jar is surrounded by water. Place on low heating for 10 to 12 hrs. I place the cap on loosely. This timing is subjective as it is not certain that you will retain all of the most important properties, but in my opinion, there is plenty of herbal goodness to go around with this method as well. I hope this helped.

Hello, which would be best for yoni bars & gels?
@WhiteDormouseArtisanSoaps
@WhiteDormouseArtisanSoaps 4 жыл бұрын
There are so many infusions to sort through and I think with the info in the video that set the ground for healing qualities, it might be best to figure out what you would like to achieve. What would you like use to help in healing. If its chapped skin, or lips or possibly a good cleansing, you might want to infuse chamomile tea and try topping off your project with lavender and tea tree oils to balance PH, soothe and tone. Try reading up on the uses of infusing Mugwort, and Burdock which contributes to treating GI complaints, bladder issues, infections and kills germs. Research some quality oils that will work with these herbs and compliment your recipe.

Castor oil is used in most soap making recipes for its stable lather and moisturizing qualities, but it is a sticky, thick oil directly out of the bottle and will not leave any room for turning your herbs, flowers or leaves. If you are using a heating box and the oils will be heated for weeks, the castor oil will warm up and become workable, nevertheless, is still quite thick. It can be done, but I would encourage anyone to research their recipe, using one of the other carrier oils that will be combined with castor and revert to using that one. Example: I love infusing pine needle for making body butter or soap with lavender essential oil. One of the issues is, when you begin to look further into non-comedogenic oils (acne prone oils that wont clog pores) I have to decide who I am making the infusion for and what I am making with the infusion. Write everything down in an infusion file to research your progress. Olive oil is still okay to use for acne prone skin, a wonderful heavy oil, but absorbs slowly. I am making a body butter with Tallow for normal to dry skin, so I used the olive to infuse pine. The reason I did this is because I want the person using the body butter to be able to warm the butter in their hands by messaging gently before applying to the skin and I need the olive oil to last a while before absorbing so quickly. If I want to make liquid shampoo that is meant for sensitive acne prone skin, light weight and can be used by any skin type, then I will infuse with safflower, or sweet almond or apricot kernal oil. These are all non-comedogenic. Castor oil ranks # 1 on the non-comedogenic scale which is fantastic since # 3 or higher is likely to cause breakouts so I would use castor in soap recipes and revert to jojoba or fractioned coconut oil in cosmetic recipes. If you would like to experiment with heating castor oil in a small amount and adding your herbs, leaves or flowers, please do so. You can decide if this carrier oil is workable. I hope this helped and please add researching non-comedogenic oils to your future infusions so you can make different types of products for each skin type. Have a happy day! I have a tutorial on heating boxes if you would like to check it out.

Can you use these in oil infused soaps on hair?
@WhiteDormouseArtisanSoaps
@WhiteDormouseArtisanSoaps Жыл бұрын
Hi there! Yes you can. Lately I have been infusing with a mixture of non-comedogenic oils so I can use them for hair products, lip care, handmade perfume and more. If you aren’t familiar with that term, please look into it as non-comedogenic may be super helpful. I usually use infused oils when making hot process soap because you can add them “after the cook” They don’t get lost in the process of lye where special oils can be lost in such high heat. So, if you are making hair products, I suggest reserving infused oils for formulations such as whipped soap, lotion, perfume, hot process soap, shampoo etc. Good luck!

Hello and thank you for your question. To my knowledge, beet root powder can be tricky when infused with a carrier oil on its own. Beet root powder can be grainy as well. Sometimes it does not behave itself so you will have to find another alternative when infusing to bring out the color of beet root to use in bath and body products. I think in this case, infusing may not be the correct way so let’s try something else. Beet root is also full of nutrients that get delivered to the skin when incorporated into face masks, makeup etc. I would have to say, this red pigment is soluble in water and released only when mixed with something containing water. Try mixing the amount of beet root powder you feel is needed with glycerin instead. Most of our recipes will not call for water so glycerin is next. The first method would be to mix beet root powder with glycerin into a paste-like consistency. This will give you some color, but will need to be strained. It’s can be pretty thick so let’s move to the second option. The second method is gently melting shea butter or butter of choice with oil and glycerin. Add beet root powder until desired color tone mixing very well until combined. Allow to cool. Using a fine cloth or cheese cloth, strain the beet root oils through a strainer to remove small partials. Repeat. This will need to be done as these little particles will interfere when making lip gloss or any product that should be smooth. If you have too much left over, pour into plastic container with lid and store until needed again. Continue with your recipe. These are all good things to know as many of us infuse herbs, so powders can be another story all together. I think its worth looking into creating recipes with beet root, fresh version or powder. I hope this was of some help.

Can we use these infusions in liquid soap bases??

Yes, you can. There has been thought given to how much of the medicinal value will be left after the connection with lye and I have not been able to find any valuable info on that, so I use these oils as a superfat after the cook in hot process. I make shampoo bars and use the medicinal infused oils after Saponification. They are also great in salves, balms, message oils, beard oils, any product where you know their qualities won’t be eaten up in the process.

Hi! Since this video we have created a heat box with lid. It’s temperature controlled to 100 degrees with heat pad at bottom of box only. I let the infused oils sit for up to six weeks and strain after that. It helps a lot, but if you don’t have a heat box, I would just set aside anywhere that the sun light is not shining directly on the oils. Turn frequently just to move the herbs around. Hope that helps.

Sami, I never mess with fresh herbs unless I am adding them to an Alembic Distiller to make hydrosols. I use all dry herbs for infusing unless its coffee or fresh orange peal. If you would like to try this method, just work with a little bit of fresh moist herbs and experiment. I think it will be a nice project. Document all of your findings.

@WhiteDormouseArtisanSoaps
@WhiteDormouseArtisanSoaps 7 ай бұрын
Hi there! I don't add any vitamin E or preservative to the infusion. If you would like to look at one of my tutorials on how to store infused oils you will see a nice way to add a bit of warmth to the oils using a heat box. Once the oils have macerated approx. 4 to 6 weeks, you can strain the oil and set aside for use on any recipe. Once your recipe is made, you can than add a preservative. For instance, I infused flax seed oil for liquid shampoo. Now I am making the shampoo. I added preservative to my final product. I will not be messing with the remaining oil until needed so no need for preservative or Vitamin E. I make sure my oils have a best used date on them from the supplier and if not, I make a call to the supplier with lot number so they can give me the date. I use that date to guide me on how long that oil will last. Even then I always check oils before using to make sure there are no odors or appearance that the oil has gone bad. Even if the oil only has 6 month remaining on best used date, I use it for something else. I want to have the longest shelf life on the oils I infuse, because I cannot always jump on a recipe. I hope this helped.

How to make dog and cat shampoo bar or liquid shampoo
@WhiteDormouseArtisanSoaps
@WhiteDormouseArtisanSoaps Жыл бұрын
Hi Sami, A good dog shampoo might consist of infused flax seed. No fragrance. You can formulate a very low percentage of essential oils, but they must be acceptable for dogs and cats. Research is going to be needed and this is a lengthy, but very valuable study. Once you research essential oils for pets, you will need to find the usage rate for those essential oils. They cannot be the ratio of what an adult human can tolerate. As far as liquid shampoo, this is the same process. You can use the same oil recipe. You may find a healthy shampoo for pets is not going to be one that a person who enjoys fragrance is going to prefer. You have to find customers that understand that pets not only do a lot of squirming in the tub because they may not like the water, but they also don't like the burning feeling of fragrance and their noses are way more sensitive than ours.

I try to reserve my infused oils for balms, salves, lotions, CBD infusions and hot process soap. Your are sweet as can be and I love your video's but you should know that anytime you add heat to an herb you can either change it's properties completely - as in Ginger - The Gingerols turn into Shogoals - or destroy the vitamins completely thereby making the infusion far less medicinal or good for you than you initially assumed. A good rule of thumb is - as often as possible - it's best to use fresh herbs that have not been heat dried or heat processed - allow fresh picked herbs to wilt for several days by hanging upside down in a warm - not hot - room. Then use. If you want to know if heat will change your herbs properties or destroy it's biochemical make-uo - research it online. Just sharing - you can take the information or leave it. Happy Creating (The Tincture Lady) Happy Herbing

devlin ostrowski Thank you so much for the information. I do appreciate your knowledge. I really worked hard on researching everywhere I could including books on herbs and infusions to introduce a few ways to infuse oils and make sure my advice was accurate. I’m happy with each method. I would recommend that anyone that plans to start infusing to please research on your own a little deeper so you can compare instruction and to also look up the herb that you are infusing hot or cold to determine which method is best for your desired Herb in order to maintain and preserve all the wonderful qualities.

I infuse all my own oil’s and I use them in my soaps , body butters , body oils and soap’s. An infused oils is an infused oil but an essential oil IS NOT an essential oil. Not at all. And only an essential oil done the correct way is then classified as a therapeutic grade that is approved by the FDA for aromatherapy. If u do not have 100% essential oil that meets the required guidelines then u do not have 100% pure essential oil of therapeutic grade hence you do not have an essential oil. To make essential oils u need a distillery set up this is the only way to make an essential oil. It take pounds and pounds and pounds of botanicals or herbs to be distilled and what u are distilling out of all that plant is water which is called an essence and when it finally comes out u get a decent amount of the distilled water aka the essence and on top floating is 1/2-1 milliliter of essential oil and that is separated. And u might’ve used 12 pounds of let’s say Roses to get the 1/2-1 ml. Of essential oil . But that is what an essential oil is that is used for aromatherapy. N the expiration dates are all a little different. It depends when you bought your oil how long was it held n not sold after being made and then how long did u have it before using it. When I open an oil I look at the month and year of expiration. So if when I bought my grape seed oil and I looked at the expiration date and when I bought it I now have 6 moths shaved off that but the time to use it. Either make the expiration date the date of the oil that will expire first or of there is only 7 months before the expiration date then I can only say it’s good for 7 months. I can’t list 2 years because grape seed oil is good for 2 years directly after manufacturing. U have to go by the expiration date on that specific bottle. Every one of my oils that I bought. And they are the same oil but they all have different expiration dates due to when they were made.

Hello, thank you for your input. With all respect to your comment, I do not infuse essential oils or dabble in the making of essential oils. I do not teach about essential oils because I am not qualified to do so. That would be too deep for me to get involved in and not something that we should talk about on this platform. I welcome your comment, but with this extent, it would be better discussed on a page that you own where you can educate those with your knowledge. I use quality essential oils in my products purchased from reputable suppliers with selections of Certified Organic, 100% Pure and Certified Fair Trade Essential Oils and Aromatherapy Products as mentioned. I trust they have many properties that are welcoming and I urge everyone to educate yourself as much as possible and learn as much as you can about essential oils and their uses. I think what you are trying to narrow down is for for anyone that would like to try their hand at infusing carrier oils with herbs, to check the date on the bottle of oil so you can not only label when it was made, but to label the date that the oil expires or was actually made. Sometimes the bottle does have a date, so please see if you can find it so you have the reference. There is nothing worse than an oil that is already 6 month old, but we dated it for today, so thank you again for noting this as it is very important to convey and warranted. Respectfully replied.
