😂😂😂😂😂😂 His humour was always excellent, His concern for truth, kindness and fun was of the highest. His skills were mind blowing, he DEFINED the comic book art form. Even PHYSICALLY his power was great as he was a regular power lifter and could bench press the same weights as Lou Ferrigno + Mr. T. thats a fact, published in WIRE magazine. Even his scientific awareness disproved a few false theories in Geology. The guy was awesome.

"Your body is made to do art....all your bones & everything that works up here is made to do art. You just have to learn how to use it." (31:10) "It's amazing the delicacy you can have with this instrument [the hand].....God has given you the greatest possible instrument you can ever have, to do artwork, & that's this delicate thing." (26:11) "Look to the past for your skills & build your skills forward, rather than ignore them & let them drop." (33:48) "That's how you get Adam Hughes [etc]....they get to be the best guys because they study the past." (34:20) Wow! This was such fun! What a character! You can see how THIS was the one who stood up to the big comics companies & led the fight for artists rights to their own work etc. I wish he'd toned down the language, especially for the school class, but an inspiring encouragement all the same. I wish i could have been there! 😏

16:58 computers are not stupid. Respect the guy, but that made him seem like a dinosaur. There are pro and cons to both digital and traditional. I know this is about comics, but for animating, no one animates on paper anymore, it's too inefficient. This is one way computers aren't dumb. I know he meant, computer doesn't make you draw better. 23:42 no one inks on cells anymore. we use computers. LOL but computers are dumb. "i can get twice a much work done with a pen than dipping." student aks, "How do you get grey tones" "Use a brush." I just thought it was funny, when he was bragging about how much better a pen was, I was just thinking some people use dip pens and brushes for grey tones, that you can't get with.a pen. Just saying. Again, pros and cons to each. Thanks showing how to hold the pen correctly and the Mr. Yang (sp?) story. It really made me smile. Along with the cultural difference of western and eastern, and white culture difference with the handball story. BTW art isn't always about reselling for more money, but I heard him out, the original if done traditionally is worth more than digital. I tend to see his stuff on Heritage Auctions, a lot so that is a plus compared to digital work. Cool and lucky students. Wonder how many will go to SVA,
@8tiveeye
@8tiveeye 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on these points. Traditional is best but not cost effective for Animation. I've been working at animation studios for years, and every studio has switched to digital for a reason. BTW he is able to sell commissions and original artwork at a high price point because he is one of the legends in the industry. Not every artist has the luxury of being able to sell their traditional work for the rates he mentioned in the video. In theses cases digital prints from computers make it affordable for the buyers, and can make a new artist a decent amount of income. One last note at the FanExpo I attended he was selling digital prints of his artwork.... you can't say computers are dumb if they're bringing you extra income ;)

Actually computers ARE stupid,. ie; they are an INSTRUMENT, like any instrument they are inherently inert. The artists input can use the computer, or pen or pencil to MAKE something clever, but the objects themselves remain, in effect, "stupid", until the human mind influences them. Neal is spot on. The computer is just a tool, which he was perfectly willing to use, as he admits, but he was concerned that they might be used as "shortcuts" to artistic success. He was not, therefore, contradicting himself at 23:42 at all.
