I've noticed over many years of teaching people how to skate that small technique problems when skating (such as an inside edge pronation or inability to glide properly) can if left unchecked develop into slow-onset injuries of the feet, ankles, knees, hips or lower back.
I've often had students come to me with those problems and pains already happening and then after carefully identifying them and changing the skaters' technique, the pains go away "as if by magic".
This video skate coaching of Maja's intermediate level stride will hopefully help you identify if you're making some of the same mistakes.
The corrective exercises, if you do them regularly, will fix the pronation issues permanently (and give you some helpful fitness exercise focus too).

Maja I think you should more bodyweight use for the push. At the moment you get all the bodyweight e. G. On the left food and push with the right food. But more easy and better is to travel on your right food with your bodyweight outside and then set down the left food and turn your bodyweight on the left food.

Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Great this video has helped you! It's quite usual that the wheels on one skate wear out way more than the ones on the other. It's mostly because we apply more force on one side, both striding and stopping. Not many people have ambidexterity. We can correct that with exercises and also practicing our weak side the double. With conscious practice, at some point you will not be able to choose one side over the other, both will feel the same! Nevertheless, it's good that you take a look at the possible pronation you may have. Please also check if you need extra support for your arc. Flat foot usually gives pain.

I have been a runner for more then 20 years, always knew i had slight pronation on one foot, which was causing tight muscles in my hip, lower back and shoulders. Tried in vain to correct it. When started skating, instantly noticed imbalance between two legs. The video and advice are brilliant. Thank you so much, Asha. Will start practicing straight away. I believe, because of mechanics of skating it would be easier to restore balance between two hips and correct pronation.

Most skaters pronate on one or both skates when they begin and I've heard skating helping them become aware and change their walking pronation (with conscious knee direction alignment and skate exercises building certain muscles). Scooting is so valuable!

Hi! I just wanted to thank you so much for the videos and the quality and precious knowledge garnered from every one. I was wondering, is it okay to pronate out instead of in? @SkatefreshVideos

Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Leaning on the outside edge is called "supination" and it's as bad as the pronation. Your wheels should be always perpendicular, we say "on the center edge." Actually there isn't an edge on the center but this term comes from ice skating where a center edge does exist.

@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 2 ай бұрын
Hi. I think you mean the frame? The metal part that attaches to the boot and onto which the wheels go. If someone has a pronation tendency when walking, so they are heavier on the inside of their foot, then they will probably pronate on skates like that too (most beginners do) but maybe it's stronger with them, os more than their other foot. So, should you move the frame in order to help you "fix" the inside edge. I think that moving the frame should be last option after you've tried many other things first you have to learn to consciously control your own edges and use exercises like scooting to go from an inside edge to a centre edge while scooting along. Almost everyone can correct even a severe pronation just by doing this exercise every time they skate for 4 minutes..... and there's tonnes more. Check out the free drills on this page with full instructions. Don't move your frame until you've at least tried to fix your skating and learn the basics of the sport. This page will get you tot he free drills which you can start using today. Enjoy. skatefresh.com/product/how-to-skate-for-fitness-beginner-level-full-course/

Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Have you seen a doctor? It's hard to say what's going on without seeing you. Sometimes cramps are a result of bad posture, other times the cause could be overuse, not enough rest, mineral imbalance, orthopedic needs, bad quality skates, etc.

Hi Asha and team! Great video I keep coming back to it as it explains the drills very well. I purchased your “How to skate for speed/fitness beginner” and practiced Scooting with high numbers. I have a pronation on the left leg which is more pronounced whilst scooting. I really struggled to keep a centre edge whilst scooting with the right leg, and sort of started swaying to the right and kept losing my balance. I couldn’t do more than five scoots per side. Is this because I haven’t built up the strength and muscle memory? My quads are sore after this though, so I think it was a productive training session! I do exercise outside of skating (weightlifting & Yoga) so I do have strength and mobility but clearly my balance and technique need more practice. Thanks again for your great content!
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 3 ай бұрын
Well done for noticing that you have a portion on one leg while scooting (more than the other). There's probably multiple things contributing to that but start off with trying to do a super short scoot (in width to the side), only like outer hip width. And try to recoup the heels together in the middle as closely as possible without touching them. So shorter scoot and closer regroup will result in a better control of the support foot edge and hopefully allow getting closer tot he centre edge. See if you can scoot without your belly button moving around sideways. It becomes a smaller movement then and that's better as you're learning to get super comfortable on both leg push + glides.....

Thanks for another great video. Some people suggest to slightly adjust the frame (shift laterally towards the inside edge) to compensate for persistent inside pronation. Hard to know though whether it's something wrong with your foot or more practice and exercise is needed. Any advice on that? Should the frame be left dead centre as a general rule?
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. As a general rule it's better to leave the frame where it is by factory settings. It's set in the best place it can be, and that place is related to where your toes are, not to pronation/supination as some people think. The lateral adjustment is mostly designed for speed competitors who need extra fine-tune, but not for regular skaters. The more options a skate has the more messy it gets in your head. Asha has seen lots of cases where people have used the lateral adjustment to "fix" their wrong footsteps, and unfortunately that led them to even worse problems because it affected ankles, knees, and hips. There are two types of pronation/supination: 1) The one described by Asha in most of her videos about stride, the tendency to rock your ankles in or out even while your footsteps are fine off-skates. This is fixed with focus, scooter exercise, self-analysis. 2) The one diagnosed by a doctor, where your ankles rock in or out also off-skates. This one is worse and also wear out your shoes in a very uneven way. In this case you need orthotics designed especially for you, to wear on and off skates. You must replace the regular insoles AND do the exercises too. So the advice would be to make sure what type of pronation/supination you have. Lots of people suffer from a combination of both. I have fallen arches so I wear the orthotics and also worked on the exercises to correct the position. I assure you that with practice and concentration the problem is gone after a while.

I am really confused! Thankies in advance!
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos Жыл бұрын
Hi. This is Sergio from Skatefresh Team. Leaning forwards is something you do when you are at an intermediate level and want a faster stride. It's done to improve aerodynamics, not to avoid falling over as some people think. You keep knees over toes whenever you are on skates, no matter what level you are. Certain tricks in freestyle slalom, figure skating, etc. do require to transfer weight to the heels at times, but this does happen obviously when you are at an advanced level. If you just started stay with the instructions in these two videos I list here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/abyddpdmsK6uZqs.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oJ6foNqVssqylmg.html So you start with Stride 1 which resembles duck or penguin steps, because your weight is distributed 50/50 on both legs, your first priority is balance, not speed. Later on (probably some months from now) when you are able to transfer weight from one leg to the other without losing balance, you will be doing Stride 2 which is the one Maja performed in this video you are commenting. Stride 3 also appears much later. Therefore, the stride evolves as your skater's life goes by.
@NicolasLeclerc
@NicolasLeclerc 3 жыл бұрын
Does this also applies if you have flat feet ? I'm wondering how much you can compensate for that with technique only.
@SkatefreshVideos

I’m not sure about flat feet but maybe try some raised insoles inside your skates and see how that affects your edge control. Experimentation is everything.

Hey, Asha! What should I work on if I got Genu Varum? I started working on my pronation, but my wheels always end up tilting inwards. :(
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. For genu varum, genu valgum, pronation, and supination, the exercises are the same explained in this video. Everything lies on that well bent support knee, you move it sideways accordingly until you get the wheels perpendicular to the floor. Do the exercises at the beginning of your training session, when you are fresh, and if possible use someone to film you, or a mini tripod, so that you can check your progress. It does take time and a really conscious effort, you will not correct it overtime, especially if the defect comes from your childhood days. If that's your case, I suggest that you see an orthopaedic surgeon. They may be able to give you some other exercises to practice off skates. Some people have those postures only when they are on skates, in those cases it's easier to correct.

Im knock-kneed, with weak ankles, and flat-footed. The unholy trifecta of bad genetics, so i naturally pronate. Luckily i bought skates with adjustable frames, so i moved them inwards slightly towards my big toes, which forces my balance more towards the center edge. Also considering arch support to keep my feet from collapsing inwards

Hi. This is Sergio from Skatefresh Team. Contrary to popular belief, the transversal frame adjustament was not designed with that purpose in mind. Frames are placed on the best place they can be by factory settings, and it's better to leave them alone. To fix pronation it's necessary to wear an arch support (on and off skates) prescribed by an orthopedic, AND to focus on the exercises Asha shows in this video. You have to do hundreds of repetitions, and over time you gain strength and the correct form becomes second nature. I can say that because I suffer from the same.

I realised I've a pronation on my left foot on outside edge just often standing. Is this common or am I a freak? Well, at least I caught it early in my learning stage so guess I've got to work on my knee placement. It's a bit like snooker - coordination of eye line, elbow/shoulder alignment, stance, head still and the gripping of the cue!
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. If it's on the outside edge then it's not pronation, but supination instead. It's not as common as pronation but some people do have that too. Both are incorrect. Apart from working on your knee placement check if your skates are tied up correctly. When skates are loose there is a tendency to let the skates rock in or out, especially if they are soft boots.

@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 8 ай бұрын
Hi. This is Sergio from Skatefresh Team. That's because speed doesn't rely on equipment, it's actually your technique what matters. Obviously, the same skater using 76mm and 110mm will go faster using the latter. I suggest that you practice the scooter exercise. Do it focusing on your central edge and that will improve your speed. You do need, however, to be very persistent and keep going. There are some other "tricks" marathon competitors use, for example the use of your own fall as a propulsion boost. These tricks come to you over time, you will start with the scooter exercise as a foundation. There is a whole series made by Asha about speed called Skate for Fitness and you can find it here skatefresh.com/learn-to-skate-online/ How frequent you skate is important too, you can get out of shape pretty easily without a periodic routine. If you skate regularly and challenging yourself, your cardiovascular and respiratory systems will work together with your muscles giving you more endurance and speed. Don't worry about your wheels diameter that much. If the maximum diameter your skates accept is 76mm I guess it's because you have a small foot, therefore that diameter is the best for your size to be comfortable keeping maneuverability.

Is it ok to fall slightly on The outer edge?
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. No, it's not ok, you can hurt your ankles that way. If you are doing the intermediate stride you should focus on the center edge, later when you are in an advanced level your stride becomes rich and complex, and you use all edges combined.

Umm hi, i have busy foot, my stride is poor. I always underestimating the "push and pause" training so i never try this. But after i realize i always out of breath after about 2 km, i need a better stride. I notice pro skater, even you slightly fall to the outer when striding, but when i tried that, that was a mess. 😂 Now i am lowering my pride, forget about the trick, and drilling with push and pause. Then magic happened, the "pause" after grouping my foot have HUGE effect on speed, stride frequency, and tiredness. Lol. I should do this from now on🤣 Thankyou 😁

Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. What most beginners try to do is to imitate the advanced skaters' posture and stride, and that's actually a mistake, because you don't start with that kind of stride at all, you need to go through different previous stages to get there. As you said it's a mess when you try to do it, because you lack certain requirements as a beginner/intermediate. The stride evolves, it doesn't come just like that. If you want to improve your stride and go through the different stages without struggling that much I recommend the series "How to Skate for Fitness" by Asha. When I say pronation is common, I mean REALLY common. Once you know it you can't un-see it! It's such a shame that there isn't more emphasis in general encouraging skaters to work on this I've seen soooo many people face slow-onset injuries caused purely by this problem. I've seen some people fix it and the pains and injuries disappear. And I've seen them not fix it and the injury just gets worse and worse. They've even then had surgery to correct it and that can create more issues. I want to savekaters from this fate. It's so cable! Thank you for spreading the word. The Playlist here on Strde is the best place o send them plus the free rials of y Fitness courses on skatefresh.com. They are the definitive guide for sure.

I have heard "pronation" 8623823 times in this video. Besides from sounding interesting this is not going to help any skater, definitely not when it is framed as it is going to cause injuries (which is not true). I'd leave that to the (para)medics if need be and talk more in terms of edge control, balance, wheels straight, inside edge, outside edge, falling to the inside etc.

I have seen hundreds of skaters over the eyarswith this issue of inside edge pronation (lack of edge control) and in some cases it does lead to slow-onset injuries. I only know this because after much experimentation, when the pronation was fixed and centre edge ontrolachieved, the pains and injury then disappeared. Also I noticed that the knee/akle or hip pains always came form the side of the body that was also pronating. I saw skaters who didn't fix the pronation and the pains got worse. I say skaters fix it and it disappears. This is exactly why I make so much repetition to it being a serious problem that every skater should be working towards fixing. It is more often than not heavier men who suffer these pains but not exclusively. Sometimes when a skater begins to increase their distances (training for marathon for example), that's when the problem then starts. I speak from 21 ears experience training thousands of people. Pronation can and does cause pains and injuries. Not all pronating skaters will develop these (thank goodness), but too many do and I'd like to spare this for as many skaters as I possibly can.

@@SkatefreshVideos All the respect for your experience. Have you heard of 'nocebo'? You can 'fix pronation' without using those exact words and linking it to injuries. This keeps skating fun instead of creating worries. Worries cause a lot more harm than pronation.

@SkatefreshVideos hello Sergio, thanks for the quick reply. I'm only an hour into skating at 44 From watching others of Skatefresh vids it was just my laces not tight enough, bad posture and weak ankles. Also I'm using the FR FR 2 80 inline skates with no break probably not the best to learn on? As I can bearly move forwards without wanting to fall backwards. Now my problem seems the boot is high up my shin not letting me bend my knee...but as I type this..I'm guessing that's my posture problem...I will shut up now wasting your time...maybe will feel better my next hour 😆 Happy skating!
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 11 ай бұрын
Hi. This is Sergio from Skatefresh Team. Right, skates with no brake are not for beginners, however no matter the skates they will always allow you to bend your knees correctly. The tendency to fall backwards is totally normal for beginners, but the only way to avoid that is to bend your knees. You need to bend them until the point you look down and can't see your toes, because your knees will cover them. Doing so will make your weight to be forwards on your skates, between the first and second wheels (in a 4-wheeled skate) and that will keep you in balance.
