The first reference, a citation of a negative, is a hard one to conclude. Dealing with this problem with my father and his parents in the '40 Census, where I know where they should have lived, and also know there are items from what was shared by my father, as to possible explanations. That and the fact that the family name has been butchered for years suggest their record might still be out there, I just haven't found it yet.

What is the problem with inclusion? If it's how to cite a negative search, this is what I would recommend. Insert a source citation for the 1940 Census. But when you come to the portion where you're trying to specify a discovery, you would say, "NIL - searched for xxx in yyyy location." This information says that I didn't find any matching results for this search parameters. If it's explaining the missing person event, just explain that they aren't in that location. Then in a footnote, explain why you can't find them. Then insert an endnote to the proper citation. At least, that is what I would do. Does that help?

@@WriteYourFamilyHistory that works. As long as I'm laying out the parameters of where I looked and how I may have searched in general, it's a good reference point.
