how to install 2 piece split-lip type rear main seal on a Ford M block v8

title says ford, but this applies to basically all pushrod v8s of the time, with small differences here and there. I tried to be as specific as possible, seeing as many of the videos I found online were very broad and did not explain how to actually place the seal specifically. hope my long-windedness isn't too annoying for anyone

Oh my God, thank you so much because you were very thorough. I would have totally screwed that up. I'm a girl but I'm a mechanic. And I'm good at what I do, but not if I don't know it. And I don't know this and I have a 351 Windsor 77. It's my baby truck. It's my 67 Ford 1 ton short bed in Roseburg, Oregon. And I love it so much. But my ex-boyfriend just totally dropped it on its case and destroyed it. And I'm trying to get the engine going. So thank you. Because it lraked like a son of a ....... gun. Mines upright and installed, yet my whole truck is taken apart. Cuz he totalled it by droping it from a forklift. Ugghhh. !!!! Yeah. Good video, but the Hayne's manual for vehicles with the 351M does the correct instructions for seal placement and tells you can do this with the engine in vehicle by just rotating the seal around the crank. ~$40 gets you a physical manual and 1 year access to the online version.

Did not leak oil afterwards? I've been told that you need to add just a little rtv or sealant to the back side of the seal for it to work.

I know this is old video but what year is the vehicle you are working on? I have a 86 I’m working on and can’t take engine out. Got transmission out and have a book but not much info, like you said. Thanks. Oil leaked on clutch and ruined it, looks like it ruined it twice. I’m fixing previous owner’s mess.

Mine is a 1974. Rear main seals are very hard to do on older ford's without removing the engine because you have to remove the oil pan, which usually can't be done without lifting the engine up out of the bay at least 6 inches

if you pull the crank to do just the rear main, you may as well do a total rebuild whereas in-frame and you can get 300k more, maybe, for just the seal....
