Yeaaaaaah I'll just be swapping my knob into the factory boot. I'd rather fuck up the stock retainer ring for the shifter than deal with that headach of separating the boot from the retainer
@c0Ld6 жыл бұрын
I want to do this but it seems like a meticulous pain in the ass
@TheAgeOfAnalog6 жыл бұрын
You don't need the BFI boot. I reused the factory boot and it looks/works just fine.
@Fopeano6 жыл бұрын
This is meticulous, but you need the practice if you think it's a PITA. Consider getting one and be happy.
@anthonyjbone6 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, I recommend using that bone tool you used to remove the old boot as a faster way to get the inner ring clips out. I was having issues trying push the clips out directly, so I just dug the bone tool in between the chrom and inner ring, and then pushed the frame inwards to get the clips out.Took care of it really fast and no broken frames.

Yea just skip the hardest part of the install. Good one

I suggest Blue (medium hold) Loctite or similar threadlocker on the set screws. Mine have came loose three times in one year. Hoping this is the last time I have to tighten the screws.
@synaptik111 Жыл бұрын
I've had the same problem with the shifter coming loose - even with loctite. Pretty annoying. How'd you remedy it? I tightened the hell out of my set screws and they still won't hold for very long.

God damn! That was an epic battle. Congrats on winning.

Paul I realize you used the BFI boot instead of the original in order to save the original one. However, considering the difficulty of removing the plastic ring from inside the factory boot (and the chance of breaking it) and how difficult it will certainly be to reinstall the ring in the factory boot (one would need to obtain adhesive of some sort), wouldn'y you say one would be better off just using the factory boot along with the BFI knob? Otherwise, thank you for the instructions! -Ken

MisterWannabee lm curious as well, especially considering is the same exact leather type boots rather than switching to something like an Alcantara. Well I think it may be, and I can’t tell from the video and I wish I knew, is that a new boot must be shorter and have less slack

Very excited to get my shift boot in, except they improperly sent me a DSG boot instead of the manual 😕 almost a month of waiting for the wrong product
@IainB6 жыл бұрын
Another vote for the DSG install. When I had to pull the center console apart in my wife's MK7 R (to install a DoubleApex garage door opener) that chrome ring that boot is attached to doesn't separate from the rest of that center piece. It turned out that center piece was quite a bit different in the DSG MK7 R then it was in the manual GTI that they used for their testing, they ended up having to revise the instructions for the installation.

It’s seems super hard and like I’ll probably be screaming in my garage at the top of my lungs but it does look a lot better than stock, in fact every time I see it with stock boot the boot is ugly pinched, too big and funky looking. As much as I feel like this will make my life hell and scare my wife and kids when I’m screaming and I’ll probably end up having to buy a whole new ring thingie I definitely want it.

Hey Paul, I enjoy the videos but it seems like you’ve lost a little enthusiasm. I don’t know if it’s because you’re tired of MK7 DIYs or just in general. I want to keep getting quality videos, so if you have to change projects to that AUDI or any other vehicle you had in mind

This looks really annoying and too much work, I just did it and if you have the right tools and be patients it's actually kinda fun. It's much easier than you'd think, just do it
@europeanlegend93472 жыл бұрын
This looks like such a tedious install for the price of these shifters. Why not just include the entire trim piece and make everyone's life easier? make a simple and direct unplug and plug swap. If you break the trim in the process, you're fucked until you order a new set. Kind of turns me off all together on these.
