In this video, we go through the steps I took to install my new 6.2" touchscreen GPS in my 2007 Subaru Impreza! Let me know if you have any questions!
The radio used is a Jensen VX7020 ... you can find them on Amazon and Ebay as well as other places. I'm very pleased with it.

I was just at the dealer and they wanted an extra 1,000 just to have an upgraded radio. I was a little piss then but now after seeing this video ; I am fuming mad. How many new car buyers payed through the nose to get a fancy head unit on their new SUV not knowing they could of just stuck with the base model and just go to one of those audio places in the hood for a fraction of the cost. Actually you could of use that money wasted on buying a factory upgrade and buy a top of the line after market Touch screen unit.

The last time I soldered wires was in high school. I’m a bit nervous about that the most. Any soldering tips for a n00b?
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 6 жыл бұрын
Best tip I can give is to check out some of the many helpful how to videos here on KZfaq! I have spent quite a bit of time soldering in the past, and find when joining wires together you are best to fold the ends into each other and twist to secure the join, then apply a light coat of flux directly to the join and hold the iron on the join while dabbing the solder until an even amount is deposited. This is similar to the NASA method. (Google it) The type of solder and gauge of wire will define the iron temperature (if it is adjustable on yours)... Best to practice on some scrap pieces first! Oh, and remember to slide on the heat shrink before making the join, I still forget that step all the time! Good luck!!

Good easy video. Was it just the appearance of the old deck that you didn't like or was it the sound as well? Did replacing to the Jensen improve the sound quality to a decent level?
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 7 жыл бұрын
The sound never bothered me as much, as with a tuned exhaust I didn't listen to music that much!.. but the new radio definitely did improve the sound by quite a bit. Way more punch, and a better equaliser. I mainly wanted it for Bluetooth, cleaner looks, and the ability to have a GPS (if I bought maps, which I never did!) ... I've actually got a new car now, and am currently planning for a whole new sound system! Might make a video or two on that, we'll see! Thanks for commenting!

There are some Android stereos for sale that fit specific vehicles, but on the whole you will mainly find "double din" sized stereos like the one here. For cars that do not come from the factory with a double din style of radio, you will have to purchase a conversion kit online to alter your dashboard trim so that a double din will fit. Try searching your vehicle on Google and see what other people have done. Hope that helps!

Can the original equipment wires plug directly into the new equipment? Can it be plug and play? I've noticed some people literally just unplug the old unit and plug into the new.. no cutting, soldering, etc
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 3 жыл бұрын
It can be plug and play but only in certain circumstances. Most brands of aftermarket radios will have their own proprietary plug design, but use industry standard colour coding for the wires (which can match up with a harness like seen in this video). Sometimes though, you can find pre-made harnesses that allow you to plug one end into your car, and the other into the new radio. The key is making sure the harness you buy is compatible with both your car and new radio. Some Android stereos online are designed to plug and play in your car, but I can't honestly recommend them based on the many reviews and owner stories I've heard and read over the years. Hope that helps 👍

@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 7 жыл бұрын
Sorry to get you worried! As long as nothing can ground out you should be fine. Even if it does though you will probably just blow a fuse - I just didn't want to take the risk of having a spark catch the carpet on fire. If you really want to, you could wrap the connections with electrical tape. Mabye I'm just too OCD, I know a lot of people have used the crimp connectors and been fine! In fact, in higher temperature areas, crimps are preferred as solder could melt. I guess it's all preference. Cheers!

I heard that installing a Bluetooth radio will drain your car battery. Is this true?
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 3 жыл бұрын
It shouldn't, no. The wiring system has a power and ground, plus a keyed ignition source. It will only pull power from the battery when the key is in the run position. There are of course situational issues where the radio may not fully power off and could be a parasitic drain, but that's not how they are intended to operate. Cheers! 👍

Is it really that bad to twist and tape the wires ?
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 5 жыл бұрын
For test wiring it's fine, but for permanent installation in a car it's a bad idea. As you drive, the jostling of the car can cause intermittent problems with the twist and tape connections, and possibly blow a fuse for the radio circuit. If it is bad enough to cause sparks, the arcing can even penetrate that tape. It's just not worth the risk of a fire. If you don't have the equipment or don't want to solder, you can buy a package of butt-connectors for less than $15 ... A lot of times they will come with the crimping tool as well.

Weird. The unit powers up, but there's no output to the speakers? Have you tried multiple ways of playing music? (bluetooth, aux, radio) The headunit itself could be faulty, but I'd go through and double check the wiring. Grab a 9V battery and go through each speaker's channel wires to see if you can hear a "pop" at the speaker. If you can, and it's wired into the radio correctly, I'd say you've got a bad headunit. You can always grab a multimeter and check the pins on the radio to see if there's any voltage going to the speakers. That's the all I can come up with off the top of my head... I'm no pro! Best of luck to you!

I gave the old radio to my brother for his tent trailer... The thumbnail is more figurative than literal 😉

you can look up "single din touchscreen" online and its basically a small radio which all old cars have but it has a screen that comes out and flips up when you turn on the car hopes this helps

Hello. i have the same impreza, but my stock stereo is 1din cd player and compartment beneath. o bought one 7'' head unit and it did not fit. i'm quite desparate to figure out whats up. as far as i understand 2din should fit. my brain is close to exploding with this... and then i looked up Jensen VX7020 and found this: Other Specs & Features Weight (ounces) 0.1 oz. Weight 6.4lbs. Weight (grams) 2,903 Width (inches) 9.5 Height (inches) 6.5 Depth (inches) 11.5 Width (mm) 241.3 Height (mm) 165.1 Depth (mm) 292.1 2din should be 7''x4'' right? then why is there 9.5''x6.5''? This was the one that fucked me up good... Will really appriciate any help!

Is there anyway to switch a touch screen to a traditional stereo? Not a fan of this, I don't like change. I mostly just listen to public radio and some fm stations. I have my dial up desktop for internet...jk I do have an iPhone and that's all I need.
