I have this EXACT same problem with the joists lying flat on the ceiling wide side down and therefore nothing for the A-bracket spikes to stick into! You offered a solution which I’m grateful for but how did you glue the 2x4 pieces on without cutting a bigger hole in the ceiling?

I would have trimmed the bracket ends to align with joices.
