Thanks for the video, it's refreshing to see a complete walk thru by a regular Joe instead of some snarky hipster doing it in two minutes and skipping half the steps. Hope you recovered from your surgery. Best wishes.

After going stark raving mad over the nut I finally figured out that angle pressure while you get it started to make sure the inter nut is not turning is essential. Then once it gets started you can slowly back off on the angle pressure

Before I install mine on silverado, I watched your video to see the overall sequence and it helped me a lot. Thanks for uploading. However, as i have seen in the review section of the amzon and other places, the manufacture need to be a little bit more clearer on the step where we need to tighten the nutsert by rotating 9 turns. And your video also was edited in such way that it does not show the actual sequence. When you are at the step where you are installing nutsert, you have to hold the allen screw with wrench and rotate the nut counterclockwise 9 turns. Those of you, like me, are weak at mechanical things might want to know.

Rotating the nut CCW only loosens the whole washer setup and doesn't do anything to put the insert in. ??? If u hold the Allen key screw and righted the nut CW it causes the screw to be removed from the threads at the end of the insert and doesn't do any bit of expanding. Can u explain better what u did to get it to expand.

Andrew Hopkins It is a frustrating piece of what should be a simple install, isn't it? You can tell by the number of comments on this vid that you and I are not the only ones! If I recall correctly, the threads are opposite of what you'd expect, so to get the insert to expand you have to turn the screw the opposite direction. There are some excellent detailed descriptions by other viewers so read through some of the older comments for additional info.

Thanks for your video. I was able to install the kit in 15 minutes, but only after spending one hour trying to figure out that 'nutset'. Between your video and the comment from Marrs1721, it finally clicked in my brain. Hold the Allen wrench with a big pair of pliers, don't turn the screw - turn the bolt, voila!

Very helpful video. I just installed this on my 2012 Ram Laramie Longhorn and after reading the instructions and watching this video twice, I was able to install the tailgate assist in 20 minutes! The only agonizing part is the nutsert, but marking it before you start turning makes it a lot less nerve wrenching.

I held the wrench stationary and only turned the allen key. The wrench helped me to put angular tension on the nutsert to get it to stay put. Once it started expanding (see my video at 3:58) I was able to stop using the wrench all together and only turned using the allen key. I turned clockwise ("righty-tighty").. Good luck!

Just a fyi, Dee Zee has a new part #43301(replaces 43300) that addresses the tight fit between tailgate and cable issue. Also have been told you can use a thinner washer than the one in the kit and this will also take care of the rubbing. Some people have had paint removed because of this problem. New part is supposed to be out soon .

Suggestion for you. Try putting the old painted washer back on instead of using the provided one. I think the one they gave you is a little thicker and that is why it is sticking on the cable when you open it. The original painted washer was not as thick. Great video by the way. Let me know if that helped.

@Larry I had the same problem. DeeZee says CCW and several other viewers have commented the same. I had to put some angular tension on the allen bolt/installer gadget to get the nutsert to "bite" on the inside of the hole. Also, while I did turn CCW, if you watch closely (~3:55) the last bit of tightening I did, u'll see my wrench turning clockwise and the thing tightening...go figure. I recommend u call their cust srvc number, they have been responsive to other viewers. Good luck!

Installing the nutsert on an 07 Ram I had the same problems as others.. I found that the nutsert itself must not turn. You hold the Allen wrench steady and turn the 10mm wrench CW. FIRST HOWEVER-- Remove the nutsert from the nutsert tool. Check and see if the cut grooves in the nutsert are deep enough to allow easy separation and compression when you turn the wrench. Just like a wall anchor. If not use a Dremel tool and cut them a bit deeper. If you do not have a Dremel use a very small hobby type flat blade screw driver and punch through the deepest part of the cuts. You may need a small hammer. Just a bit now- don't over do it, take your time. Assemble the nutsert and tool and set to the 3/4" inch. You will have to press down (or sideways) on the allen wrench so the nutsert itself is held steady by the wall of the hole in the tailgate as you turn the nut. After a few turns you will feel the diference and as you turn it will straighten out in the hole. Tighten to recommended setting, do not overtighten.

When installing the nutzert...the allen wrench is used to hold the allen head bolt still. During this process it should not move. Mark the nut and turn it clockwise with the wrench. Very quickly the nutzert begins to crush firmly locking itself to the tailgate.

@Vibe286. I know how you feel...it was definitely a challenge for me, too. Since the nutsert itself works like a drywall anchor, the trick seems to be getting it to stay put. If it rotates as you screw the allen bolt, the nutsert won't expand. I just kept fiddeling with the tension on the nutsert until I felt it start to grab. Once the it starts expanding you will feel the difference right away. Not sure if that makes any sense at all, but good luck! Let us know if and how u get it working!

I believe Dee Zee has corrected the problem with your cables. I think the new part number now is #43301. It now includes a bracket that hangs down a tad to mount the gas strut at the top and keep the cables from touching they way yours does. The gas strut might also be a little shorter...That is if you still have the truck..

It is hard to figure out, isn't it! Think of it like a drywall anchor, if you've ever used one of those. As you tighten the bolt, it collapses the back end towards the front end, thus expanding the middle part. Assuming you are holding the locking nut securely, try turning the bolt in the direction opposite of what you've been doing. I bet that will do the trick. You just have to be careful not to over tighten it and strip out the threads.

That's thread locker (essentially a glue). It creates a bond between the nut threads and the bolt threads so that the nut does not rattle itself loose under normal vibration. But it's easy to break loose with a wrench if you need to. Common brand name if you need to buy off the shelf is Lock-Tite. They come in different colors to represent different strengths of the glue.

The instructions they give you are misleading. Hold the Allen wrench in the screw and then tighten the NUT clockwise until the bolt inside expands enough and you feel it tighten. Loosen the nut counterclockwise a turn or two then take out the screw. Look inside to see your progress. If you can insert and tighten the little ball head screw then you did it right.

I checked with the manufacturer, and they don't make one specifically fitted for the '99 model. The first year they made one for Dodge was 2002. If you can compare a 2002 model to yours, or check with your local Dodge dealers parts department, you might get lucky. Alternately, Amazon carries at least one other lift assist by Hopkins. I am not familiar with that company or product at all, so the best I can do is point you in their direction. Thanks for watching, and have a great week!

fiestasport Hey, thanks for sticking up for me. Mack McCurry To be honest, the problem with this video isn't so much the mic on my camera as it was the fact that I was only about 18 months into recovery from extensive radiation treatments for head and neck cancer.
