Install a dishwasher like a plumber! Today I'm replacing my dishwasher and I wanted to bring you along to show you how to remove your old dishwasher and install a new one! To be honest, this isn't a very hard job, but if you don't have a good understanding of how dishwashers work, or are installed, it can be difficult.
Also, knowing the right way to install a dishwasher can save your having to pay for installation from the delivery team who may not even know how to install it.
Good luck!

i'm by no means a plumber but I do appliance installation for a living, to keep the counter top from happening, you can lean the dishwasher back, lower the legs down in the front, then slide it out. I always always always run the feet down before removing to avoid this kind of thing. Also, some times theres water still in the tub of the dishwasher, if you put it on its back instead of on the side you'll never get water leaking out the door if there is water in there.

I used a Formica repair kit F343-7889 to make an invisible repair. Was $12 in 1978. WisonArt has a similar kit. Ever since then, I would always raise the front levelers first or even use an angle grinder to remove them if I had to. You are very knowledgeable an I respect your experience.

I think that strip is to prevent steam from softening your particle board countertop and turning it to mush. I would have made the electrical connection with the dishwasher out of the hole and turned up so I could easily access the electrical box on the dishwasher. Also, I would have put a high loop in that drain line since you are not running an air gap. Great video.

Sorry to correct you in one point. The aluminumfoil strip is to prevent steam going into the wood of the counter top. Therfore it should be placed as close to the front as possible. It is needed for people that open door regulary while the machine is still hot.

You should always shut off the breaker before removing it. That cord can still carry power to the electrical box and if there is any break in the skin of the wire you could get hit. I know it’s only 115v but it can still hold you.

Followed your instructions and, man, made everything so much easier! One issue I came up against was copper pipes leading to a nearby radiator were placed a long time ago a little too far forward in the space to push the dishwasher as far back as I would have liked, about 0.25 inches. Not awful but I like things flush. That's a bigger job for another time, I guess.

Also remember to leave some slack if you're hard wiring it in. I have encountered so many old units where the dishwasher was originally wired with just enough romex to barely reach the unit, so you can barely even pull it out far enough to disconnect it.

It's foreign to see a dishwasher drain installed without an airgap. Did you high loop the drain? Man do I envy all that room you had in that cabinet. Around here, there's a drawer in the bottom , and a farm style sink above, then an insta hot and water filter crammed into that sucker, and of course the v8 big block version of a disposal ( effing designers). To top it off we often replace the airgap with a soap dispenser post inspection. A mechanical jungle! Guess I'm getting better at plumbing yoga if you will. Excellent video! Informative, concise and entertaining. Cheers from the SF bay area!

There were some callouts for this video I saw, thank you for your plumbing videos they rock, The feet are adjustable and could be used to lower the dishwasher to avoid the damage to the counter, also if you fold a paper towel up into a square and then fold into a triangle and twist it you can use it as a stopper to keep any of the drain water from coming out of the drain line for when pulling the drain through the counter. Another trick to the waterline would be to attach it using a coupler to the copper and pulling it through the fixture in reverse you can do the same with the drain line if you have a longer run needed. Just make sure you can check your holes that feed the lines through to make sure you can fit the cabling and coupler through. Make sure to have the water line coming out of the unit facing the hole in the cabinetry as it is less likely to kink if you have it facing opposite and you pull it to tight you will kink the line causing the cable to slow the water being inlet into the unit. Side note for the connections most manufactures will not service the unit if they find that the cabling (electrical and waterline) were not replaced, this is due to there being multiple issues that happen in the lines ( bends tears, crimping, deposits that occur in the water lines electrical and drain lines. The plastic liner helps prevent damage to the electronics but also gives the steam an area to condense to when the unit opens during the drying cycle. You want about 1/4 inch below the countertop to avoid damaging the unit on the screws. The area you called the seal on the outside edge of the dishwasher is not a water seal it is a sound dampening seal, the seal for the dishwasher is on the inside of the door. Make sure you create a high loop on the dishwasher to prevent back flow from the garbage disposal. (Usually creates a rotten egg smell in the dishwasher ) high loop will alleviate this. The drain line should go up above the sink level to create the high loop.

Hi Roger, Love the work you demonstrate. Note that when you say 'either line can connect to the black or the white', this is likely not correct in the US. Since AC power doesn't have a permanent + or -, the appliance will function connected either way. However the appliance was probably built with consideration for white being 'neutral' with switching on the black or 'hot' conductor. Reverse wiring probably increases shock hazard and potential for leakage current.
@johnhaller5851

The 2014 NEC requires the dishwasher to be connected to an accessible GFCI/AFCI circuit. You can't change the outlet behind the dishwasher, as it's not accessible without removing the dishwasher. It also can't be under the sink, also not accessible when used for storage. Modern dishwashers have a fault possibility of shorting to ground, which is the reason for the newer code. So, have your electrician pull the permit for that change. If you are lucky, you have a single bay switch above the dishwasher which can be changed to GFCI/AFCI outlet with a switch, so your can tell your electrician it will only be a 5 minute job 😉. If it's in the breaker panel, with no switch, it needs a lockout capability on the breaker.

Hi I don’t know if you go back to old videos and reply or not. I am a appliance installer/prefab contractor in California. I get customers all the time telling me I should do videos like this I keep putting it off lol. Couple suggestions if you do another video like this. Mention the high loop or air gap, manufacturer wants a high loop in California code requires an air gap. You might mention that there is usually water in the tub so I recommend laying it on its back to remove the cord and put some sort of strain relief on the new one. You can gain depth to push the dw back further to match the cabinet doors by drilling a hole low in the cabinet and run the line through that making sure you do the high loop under the sink. Love your videos.

Good video. One tip I've learned, is before you do any hookups, put the new DW in the hole, and prelevel it. That way you know how many turns to the front/back feet you need to get it level first. Nothing more frustrating than doing the hookups, putting it in the hole, and then having to pull it back out and adjust the back feet. At one time, Bosch had a system whereby you could level the back feet from the front, via some adjusting levers. Have not seen those for awhile though. Also, code now is no hard wire; have to have a disconnect--plug like shown in the video.

Jesse Fritz 1.) He showed that he tightened all the fittings the one right on the dishwasher itself is like a garden hose and has a gasket/seal so it only needs to be finger tight. 2.) it doesn’t matter which way the wires go except for ground dishwashers are a 12 or 24 volt system so the pump and motors and the led displays are even stepped down further. The power is rectified to dc and stepped down with a transformer ( just like a phone charger) and the ground is only there if there is a short to metal in the wiring. 3.) However, after many years designing washers, dryers and dishwashers, I strongly recommend you have an air gap installed even if the codes don't require them. By the way, I'm looking forward to see you installing a washer, if your wife wants, I can send her a brand new unit so you can make the video (and also make her happy).

Can you hook up neg to hot and it work in an AC circuit? Yes. But be advised that new appliances today are VERY sensitive. Hooking a neg wire to hot will over work your circuit boards and motors over time. Refrigerators are particularity vulnerable to this for whatever reason. Ask me about replacing my fridge because the A-hole that owned the house prior was too lazy/stupid to keep polarity on the outlets. :/ Oh... I also want to say :thank you" for mentioning the tape with pipe dope for a connection leak. Had a slow leak but I remembered your advice. Now all is well. Thanks. :)

Countertop, gotta know. If this was clients house what do you do? Been there and it’s never a fun conversation. I admit it when it happens, it happens That is what insurance is for. When I can fix it I do. This is always the costumers choice. People get upset but most people are fine as long as you take care of it. Sometimes I can fix it sometimes I pay for it. I own my mistake and have no problem loosing a little is fine. Do the right thing because it’s the right thing to do.

I disagree about the power cord connections, the black 'hot' should go to the small side of the plug in at the wall. The white 'neutral' goes to the wide side. That cord should have a ridge on the edge indicating what side is what. You don't want the hot side going to the chassis ground side of the appliance.. some one might get a shock when working on it. If it was a 'romex ' wire connection it would be obvious for the wire connections !! PS. This is VERY Important for these newer electronic dishwashers, so the circuits don't get damaged !! So You might want to go back and check the connections...

Love this channel. I met him the other night at my show. His tips habve helped me grow my channel. The purpose of my channel is to help build my fundraising events to support good causes. I'm touring my show across the USA. Building up to the $1,000,000 in one night at the American Airlines Stadium to take disabled children to summer camp. So thank you for helping me to help others

Don't dishwashers and other appliences come with a pre-attached power cord in the US? As an electrician we always provide a socket below the sink to connect to a dishwasher. The reason it is under the sink in the cabinet: for maintainence/repairs and such. This is to easily and safely disconnect the power.

Not a fan of the hose thread connection for the water, sure they made that change to make it easier for do it your selfers. Don't over tighten that gasket connection it can crack and leak.

If I understand, you took the power cord from the old machine and spliced it into the new one. Did the new machine come with its own power cord? If so, what was the advantage of changing it over? Would that affect the machine's warranty? I'm truly puzzled, even if it's just the way the machines are sold in Texas/ U.S.A.

Wouldn't be better to install the electric cord to the electrical access panel first before the water line? This way you can tilt it up and install the 3 wire pig tail better than laying flat down on the floor.

Since it was plug in you could have laid the dishwasher on its back before sliding in and do the electrical hook up while standing up.

I was getting more and more aggravated throughout the video that you seemed so cavalier about breaking a customer's countertop; up until the very end when you said it was your wife's dishwasher. ... I guess you probably said that up front too and I just missed it, lol.
