I'm a technician at NTB and I used this today because I hadn't done a balancer in some years and wanted to make sure I had all bases covered. I really appreciate the quality content on your channel. I hope as I progress through my carreer I can become as knowledgeable as you good sir. 🍻

Very nicely done. Much better than anything I've seen. I particularly liked that you addressed the question of how far the balancer is meant to sit from the crankshaft, which is something I *was* going to look up next. I appreciate you saving me time and some headaches I probably would have caused myself.

Thank you, this video answered all my questions about the distance from the end of the crankshaft and the "FRONT" of the harmonic damper. Before I put on the timing cover, I measured the distance from the front of the crankshaft gear ant the front of the crankshaft, mine measured 1.250 inch. . Now when you need to measure the depth of the damper hole, on this damper it is 2.375 inches. So next I installed the damper, when seated up to the crankshaft gear, there's 1.000-1.125 inches from the front of the damper and the snout of the crankshaft. This video put all my worries to rest. Mine installed where there was between 1.000 and 1.100. Now all my bullies will line up properly. This is so important, I just can't express this enough. All the pullies should line up to this starting point.

5:12 A lot of people online are saying don't put antiseize on anything that's press fitted. It's only good for Internal crank use, or putting bolts into an aluminum block.

You just did one fatal flaw here. Youre suppose to hold the small nut on the end of the balencer with a socket or wrench to keep it from turning. Ive seen people turn the large nut to press on the balencer and not hold the smaller nut.. and in turn this cause the install tool to continue to tighten itself in the crank and break inside of it

As long as the bolt doesn’t turn, that’s not necessary. But yes, always best to hold it with a wrench.

I use anti-seize on lots of stuff because removal can be a nightmare if its rusted on. I remember a tire shop beating on brake rotors with a sledge hammer because most parts changers don't take the time to do shit right.

Thanks for the video. You mentioned that the timing pointer doesn't line up. I bought an old truck where someone put on a balancer that doesnt even have timing marks. I want to put the original one back on. Get the cylinder #1 at TDC and point the pointer at 0 degrees?

Hi there! 1958 AMC Rambler Super pt.25 here, I just watched your video (2 times) to help me understand how to install my harmonic balancer, I bought a instal tool but it was not the right size, I looked at another one and the counter person was nice enough to open the package, we checked the size with the bolt that goes into the crank shaft, it didn't fit either, so I had a idea to simply use a longer bolt the same size and thread pitch as the bolt that threads Into the crank shaft holding the balancer on, I was careful doing this, as you mentioned the threads in the crank cannot be damaged. So, I used this method to press the balancer all the way on, it was a bit tight at the end and didn't seem to be "seated" as smoothly, but different strokes for different cranks I geuss? Thanks for the video and advice!!

A quick tip from my side, as we used the balancer tool the wrong way around and pulled out the threads due to high load: M12x1.5 metric is the way to go. At least the L98 SBC (Corvette C4) has something like M11x1.5 threads (or in imperial 4/73s 3McQuarters idk), you can easily redo the threads in car and get a BMW wheel bolt, no joke. Also M12x1.5 should come with the tool.

What brand damper installer do you recommend for a BB 440? and what brand was the anti seize you were using? I'm ok paying a little more for the installer tool, because of fear it snapping inside the crankshaft.

I followed your directions it made the harmonic balancer go all the way back till bottoms out a harmonic balancer is passed the gauge on top and I wouldn't be able to read the mark on a harmonic balancer if I try to time it what should I do ?

what distance should the harmonic balancer should be once properly seated to the timing cover. engine is 1st gen. 1973 Chevy 350, completely stock

I have several questions: what is the 5/8 bolt torqued at, does the engine have to be prior at TDC, does it matter how one puts the balancer back on?

Working on a big block I replaced my Harmonic balancer with a Summit Racing® Bracket Racer SFI, and when installing it when it seemed to be at the end, and then the tool backed it self out. Everything I have looked at, this does not happen. They Show it getting to the point were you can not turn it any further and you know your done. Any ideas, thank you for any help.

But mine doesn't have a guide or pin to align it. Does that mean it's I eternally balanced, so it doesn't need to align with anything?

That is the loosest fitting balancer i have ever seen lol press fit at .003 usually is not that easy to install at that little of wrench effort

The crank is always threaded. The balancer bolt threads into it to retain it on the crank. If it werent threaded the balancer would walk itself off.

@@ironhorse127 thats not true. Some early crankshafts, early year chevy 327 cranks for one werent threaded. They were impacted on and used key ways and the interference fit to hold them in place. I know for one GM used to use heat and mallets to install in them. Definitely was a bit risky, and theres a reason they stopped it in 1968.

@@briand2195 Just pulled mine off of my 65 327, it was not threaded. One option is to drill and tap it, the other is to carefully pound it back on, going behind the engine and bracing the crank so it doesn't move when you are putting it back on.

@@akjeff64 At the end of the day using force to install them isn't great. We're all aware of that, but considering the factories did it that way for many years I can't see how you're any worse off then it was when it left the assembly line pounded on, even without any bracing/dampening.

How do you torque down the balancer bolt without having the engine turning? Very important step before you say it’s done. The bolt has a very high torquing spec and I’ve been struggling with how to safety torque it down while locking the rotating assembly at the same time.

It's not rocket science. Buy a flexplate turning tool to hold it or jam a screwdriver in there.

I use a piece of flat iron. Drilled a hole at either end. I then bolt one end to the flywheel, and the other to the block. It holds the flywheel while I torque the balancer bolt. That also works when I torque the flywheel bolts.

I have a impact gun that does almost exactly the same max torque as spec for the balancer.

A hammer damage can damage the crank bearings. Use the wrench that installs the tool to counter the crank from turning.

The video is very helpful to install a harmonic balancer but you are remiss by not explaining it only applies to a threaded crankshaft. My 1968 Corvette 327 cubic inches engine does not have a threaded crankshaft. The plant in Kentucky pressed on the harmonica balancer so I have a dilemma either have a machinist thread the snub of the crankshaft or use a blunt force with heat and/or freezing to pressure on the harmonica balancer. Another option is to hoist the engine out of the car and place it in a 20-ton press (Harbor Freight product) and force the harmonic balancer on the crankshaft.

Have the crank drilled and tapped for one. Or, heat the balancer up being careful to not melt the glue and put it on super quick. Heat transfer won't take very long.

Funny, you go on about butchers using the bolt to install and you say don't use hammers but, you use a Shifter??? hahaha don't you have the right size spanner to do the job?
