Thanks for showing us how to remove the old chuck.

4:26 - Machines designed for tapered chucks have a hole where you can insert a drift key to pop it out. They are _SUPER_ fast to swap out when you have multiple chucks with pre-tightened bits for doing production work. You'd have like 5 or 6 chucks lined up with all your bits, and then just pop out, tap in. Takes 5 seconds without fumbling around with nuts & wrenches, etc.. (Also, you don't have to bang the heck out of it to seat it, just one solid tap and it cold welds at an atomic level. People using Loctite are noobs, don't pay attention to that kind of technical ignorance.)

I really like this video. Getting into WW, sometimes I’m not sure about what I’m doing, when looking for videos to see if I’m on the right path, they’d skip the steps that you just showed. Also, I really dig the music and your chill demeanor. Thanks bud!

Nice to see the tapers cleaned with a solvent. A rare thing on KZfaq. There's quite a bit of runout. That's why the drill was grabbing the wood. The drill, itself, may not be straight in addition to the runout of the machine and the chuck. The odds are that the press' runout is minor compared to the chuck. You may want to reseat the chuck and give it a single firm strike. Sometimes this can be of great benefit. If there's no change in the runout, and you're happy with the performance, no need to concern yourself further. Good luck. BTW, the right way to remove a chuck is with wedges. They're available to fit a number of tapers. JT33 is not a model number; it's the size of the taper.

JT33 stands for Jacobs Taper 33, a common chuck mount size for small drill presses. Unbranded Chinese keyless chucks like this black one have more run-out than better but more expensive alternatives like Tegara chucks, which are made in Taiwan. To remove a JT33 chuck properly you should use a Jacobs #6 wedge set.

Wedge Set #6, Used on JACOB Taper No. 6JT & 33. Available for less than $20 off of Amazon or eBay. To use, you insert each wedge from the opposite sides of the spindle TOGETHER, and gently hammer them together from each side as a pair. Make sure to have the tapered part of the wedges together to form an even level space between the press and the chuck surfaces. ==\ \== This wedge pair forms a level lifting action that will separate the chuck straight down from the spindle. The chuck will pop off very EASILY without damaging the spindle or bearings. These wedges are NOT designed to be used independently or as a pry device. They make no contact with the spindle or that little groove you might see on the spindle. They create an EVEN surface that spreads apart.

Interesting, I never knew about wedge sets. We always used drift keys in the shop...

what is the model number of this drill press?
@KooperSalmo8 ай бұрын
I believe there’s only three when drill press is made mine has the digital display. There is one that’s more expensive than it but if you read the RPMs, it’s much stronger but it’s not the cheapest one because it has the digital display. I think it’s the middle grade.
