Remember, something's only actually "grounded' when it's connected to a circuit equipment ground, meaning ultimately the home run wire/cable back to the panel where the circuit breaker is. If there's effectively no ground wire (or path) back to the panel, it's considered an ungrounded (2-wire) circuit and a GFCI must be used ahead of any device or fixture that requires or contains a factory-installed ground or ground connection. (nec 410.44, ex 2)

The real answer, if you come across a box with 2 wires, is to first test the box for ground, see if it's grounded, if not then you have to run a ground wire all the way to the house main ground. If the house isn't grounded at all, you have to establish a ground. Both can be huge jobs.

One way to do it is you would pigtail the ground screw to either a wirecap or push-in connector and then combine both the incoming ground and the light ground with that pig tail in the wirecap or push-in connector. That would bond all three grounds together.

The proper way to ground all the metal in this box is to connect the bare equipment grounding conductor to the metal light bracket. One method this can be done using a 6" long piece of stranded #14 with green insulation. Connect it to the EGC of the Romex cable with a wire nut. The use a crimp fork tongue (or ring tongue) crimp lug to connect the new grounding pigtail to the lighting brackets. I would also use a crimp lug on the EGC of the fixture. These should be secured under the green EGC screw. I would then replace the to metal mounting screws with non conductive type screws. Or they must also be grounded.

I have the same situation right now. There is no ground wire available in the circuit. The old light I pulled had a green screw to attache the ground wire to on the support bracket. My thinking is...if the box is metal...the ground wire will send the charge to the box..but no place else as the box is not connected somehow to the "earth ground" system or wire. Since My box is plastic...my understanding is...you cannot get electrocuted by touching it if the ground wire is attached to it....I suppose the purpose at least for me is to keep the ground wire out of the way....since its a ceiling light I don't think it will be too dangerous...but for sure....if part of the light is metal...and its hot...you could get a jolt there I am assuming...so for me I will always just turn off the circuit/light and test including the light body frame it if I ever need to change bulbs or something.

The last 2 daisy chained (power loops in and out to two fixtures) metal fixtures I worked on the first fixture all the bare grounds were twisted together but there was no pigtail to ground the fixture from the bundle of distribution equipment grounds. It was ungrounded but the second fixture the person grounded the fixture properly. Two different houses the DIY electrician left the first fixture ungrounded. Why? Because he's not a license electrician. If a licenced electrician doesn't ground things properly he will eventually be sued. You can count on that.

All metal that might become live by an electrical system must be grounded. If a fixture is metal it must be grounded. Once the neutral leaves the main panel it must not be grounded or it floats. If a light switch has a green ground screw and you connect the bare ground wire to it, then the metal light switch box is grounded through the the metal mounting screws. This is not just some opinion. It's a fact. Grounding through the 2 mounting screws has been lab tested by UL. I would say about 20% of metal boxes and fixtures are not grounded. I had one call where a lady said the metal switch boxes in her garage were shocking her grand children. Folks..this is serious stuff and very dangerous.

Our house was built in 63 and our entire home Is wired like this no grounds exactly like this. This is older home style wiring when grounds weren’t a thing. Now they want ground on everything for protection. Some of us can’t afford to rewire an entire home. As long as wiring isn’t freyed to touch the box you should be fine in theory. Same for fans as long as there is no fraying or wires touching the electrical box to pose a current you should in theory be fine. Get remotes for fans so you don’t have to touch the pull strings and I doubt anyone Should be touching their light fixtures anyways

As a Licensed electrical Contractor and Professional Engineer, grounding in residential homes (especially older ones) is one of the the things that upsets me the most. I believe amateurs think because a light or receptacle works and he installed it....maybe he thinks it's done right? Just because a light or receptacle is working that they just installed doesn't mean it was done to meet all the NEC requirements and is safe. In my opinion, proper grounding is a common issue and is dangerous if not done correctly..

Douchebeard states this demo shows "how to hook up a fixture when there's no ground in the electrical box". There is no correct way to do exactly as he states. The correct way is to bring a ground in, which costs money and time, but right is right. Then Douchebeard proceeds to work on a setup that HAS a perfectly good ground wire just dangling in the box. He concludes that somehow the fixture will be magically grounded by wrapping its ground wire (counterclockwise, like an idiot would do) around a screw. That screw is bonded to several metal parts (OK) but then that metal assembly is attached to...... fucking *wood* studs. In the instance of a short to hot in this type of installation the homeowner would be LUCKY if the loose ground lead was pressed hard enough against the inside of the box (and only if a *metal* box) to conduct enough current to trip the circuit breaker. They would be less lucky to touch the lamp if the ground was open and even less lucky if the ground was touching enough to conduct current (heat) but not enough to trip the breaker. As bad as wood is at conducting electricity, it's very good at burning.

What’s the proper way of doing this. Do I take the ground wire from the fixture and wrap it around the screw with extra length at the end then connect that to the ground wire to the house?
@timmarrier
@timmarrier 2 жыл бұрын
@@ricardoh3178 If you mean the ground screw on the fixture bracket, then yes. If you mean the screw in the box, then also yes, although if there's a 'house' ground in the box it should already be wrapped around or pigtailed to the box's ground screw. If not, do that too...if so, connect your fixture ground to the grounding wirenut. That way all grounds are connected (equipotential). Technically the largest awg size ground in the box is supposed to ground the box. Many fixtures come with a smaller ground wire, this can ground the fixture bracket (if supplied, if used, and if it has a green ground screw), and I usually wrap it with length left over to put in the wirenut with the other grounds. Confusing enough? :)

@timmarrier
@timmarrier 2 жыл бұрын
@@ricardoh3178 Sure, any grounding is better than no grounding. Most lighting manufacturer's instructions usually say to ground the bracket using the ground screw, however the NEC allows the machine screws used to secure the bracket to ground it too, provided it's a metal box that's grounded (to the equipment/circuit ground, or 'house' ground).

Splitting hairs? The point of a ground wire is to give electricity a path to the… ground…. In case of a short. If there is no path to ground for the electricity to travel too it will back feed through the rest of the circuit and destroy any thing attached to it and or cause a fire. Grounding is very important. This is not a path to the ground the way this guy did it. Im not even an electrician and i can tell you this video is wrong

His solution doesn’t ground the fixture (he would need to find the existing ground wire and connect it to the new system), his wiring is not neatly done and he waits until the end of the video to tell people to turn off the breaker before touching the wires (that could kill people).
