The plastic "rope" around the corner of replacement window, should not be cut until caulking and shims are done. With storm windows in the 1980's, removing this rope too early, will cause alignment problems. This rope is what holds the strom window aligned. Am I right Ron? The manufacturer warns installer, to remove when almost done. Be careful you are measuring jam to jam, sash strip can cause problems measuring.

Very informative video, with only a minor correction which I'm sure was just a simplification. Obviously 'warm air' does not pass through single pane glass. What happens here is 2 fold. First off, the single pane of glass easily transfers the heat on one side of the glass to the other. It also does nothing to block infrared light from passing through. The double layer of glass prevents direct heat transfer from the outside air to the inside air, and also reflects infrared light, keeping heat energy inside in the winter and outside in the summer. Over all, great video!

Those are some nice windows! I was wondering how to do the window from inside only. What was the brand of that aluminium tape? It looked like it said Pella on it. Do you have links to any of the products you used? (like the tape and the sealant you put on the outside)? I'm in a very old house (built in the 30s or 40s). Windows are metal & don't even have trim around them on the inside. Had the siding redone so they have J-channel around the perimeter. Inside some of the windows just have wall paneling cut roughly around (bc tenants ruined the walls) & no trim. One of the windows I need to replace will be inside a shower so I'm trying to figure out how to frame it out to work with a surround and a mustee duratrim window trim kit (made of thermoplastic).

@@daibones2133 When he saws measure three times, I think he is talking about the three different spot locations left , middle , and right for both the horizontal and vertical measurements. Basically,, if the measurements are not the same then that means that the space you are measuring is not square. You choose the lowest measurement for the value to use on both the vertical and horizontal measurements. This will ensure that the window will at least fit in the space.

Hello great video. However i do have one question. What is the depth of the double hung window? 3" or 3 1/2". Are most depths 3" on newer replacement windows? Therefore you will have a 1/2'' gap between the step sill and the double hung window... How do you fix this gap between the step sill and the window? Replace the sill?

Most replacement windows come with a half inch plastic strip that slides on the bottom of the window before you install. That way it covers that gap and then just caulk around the window.

All my windows guys say that PVC and Vinyl windows are superior to Wood. I really dislike the way Vinyl and some PVC look. Plus when things go wrong they cost a fortune to replace. Wood is at every builder supply and so easy and inexpensive to replace. Here in GA I we do not have energy concerns as much as up North where you deal with extreme temp changes. I often wonder if expensive windows really pay off? I did the math once and it would have taken me 30 years to break even with PVC windows. So I just replaced my broken sealed windows with same wood (cost me 200 bucks over 800) plus I have so many clients who spend thousands of dollars in new windows only to learn a few years later when a seal breaks that it isn't covered under the warranty! Just had a client learn that with Anderson Windows.. they charged him $$$. I was so angry for him. He paid the 1200 to have the windows replaced. So anyone looking at replacing those windows better have a good look at the warranty and do the math with supposed energy savings and cost factor.
@danielscott2839
@danielscott2839 3 жыл бұрын
You’re right, replacement windows never pay off. You’ll never make the money back on your power bill, even if you install them yourself. Plus, they don’t last nearly as long as non-vinyl. Better to rebuild old ones. The most expensive replacement window, double-paned and vacuum sealed with noble gases between the panes, is about an R6. The wall next to it is an R10, even if there’s no insulation. If you’re replacing windows because you’re environmentally conscious, there is an embedded energy cost in the manufacture, shipping and installation of the windows themselves that you will never offset with the energy you save. Window marketing has been amazingly successful. Vinyl replacements should be an absolute last resort.
@ShellSellars-Smith

Since I replied to this comment I have had a buyer looking in the 2 Million and above market here in Atlanta. Well, I have made note of the style of windows. All of them had run of the mill Wood windows that you buy/order at the builder supply. Only one had custom Iron windows (and I actually think they were painted Aluminum) and that was only at the front of the house and they matched and the rest were painted Black (wood). We are talking 2.3 Million dollar new construction home. So, I think for sure I will stick with my simple Wood double hung windows. Everytime a client tells me they spend 20 K replacing windows I think, "I hope you enjoyed them because a buyer is only going to care that you have windows and they are not going to pay 20 K more for your home because you have them"... Just a hard convo to have with Sellers sometimes...

True, but these are more energy efficient because they have less space between them and it is filled with gas. A lot of times, the storm windows are not fully sealed so air exchanges easier and the gap between the windows is much larger and less ideal.

Ron...Ron...Ron. Replacing your windows will not decrease dramatically your electric bills. Energy leakage from other areas must also be addressed such as bad air seals on doors, attics, and electric outlets. How much did those Pellas cost/window? How many years is the warranty? You made it look so easy and fast, but how long before the seal for the argon gas fails, moisture gets inside, rots the wood, and you have to replace them again...and again...and again. They sound like disposable, non-sustainable windows to me. Instead of trashing the old wood windows, you could have taken the time investment to strip the failing paint we saw, repaint and reglaze the existing wood windows to fix the air leaks. Installing good weatherization products could further improve the air seal.Then invest in some high quality storm windows like Monray which don't detract from the design of the original windows. Is ease and time saving of cleaning really your second criteria for your windows?

I had that type of window installed in my house a few years ago, and it was the difference in being warm and freezing, the old windows would actually have ice build up on the inside, and always had a cold draft, no matter how warm the room was.

My house is almost 100 years old. I think the windows are original. I'm only slightly joking. Half were replaced at some point. The rest are SO bad that cardboard would probably give us better energy savings. The glass is SO thin. My daughter was making a TikTok video and trying to stand on her head on her bed...walking her feet up the wall, and then the window. Foot went through, blood everywhere, and a gash that missed her Achilles by a couple of mm. I'm watching a lot of window replacement videos and thinking I'd even take the ones they're pulling out! LOL

When you replace the window, there were no problems in leveling and plumbing ans shimming the new window. You should have shown the techniques required rather than simply stating...It's all good...The reason for these videos is not to remove and replace, but to remove, shim, level, plum, level, then replace... You are misleading the public!

+george nemeth Ron Hazelton has been on TV for a long time. These clips are short because they tend to show you the basic jist of the repair or project. They probably didn't cover that for the sake of time as they typically show multiple projects each show.
