I have watched so many of your videos during my basement bathroom install, thank you so much. I did everything from framing a new wall, covering bulkheads, drywall, replacement of rough and finish plumbing, install fiberglass base, and tiling the floor and shower. I could not have done it without your help. Love the simplicity and your explanation gives confidence that we can do it ourselves and come out with a great finish. Thank you Jeff!

Do you have a separate video on the rough plumbing for the shower pan? I’m converting a tub to a shower pan. The drain will be on the right side. I’ve learned so much from you. Your videos are awesome!

You made this look so easy! I'm hoping it will go as smoothly when it comes time for my installations. Got a shower & a tub in separate bathrooms to install. I'm debating whether or not to replace my cast iron tub coated in porcelain bc the porcelain got scraped off on part of it (reckless deadbeat tenants). The idiots who installed the tub put the P-trap right through a joist-- they cut ALL the way through the joist for it so I'm going to have to make a support box under it & I will probably go with a direct drain (P-trap under the drain rather than the overflow). I'm probably going to cram some wood in between the cut in the joist to offer more support and sandwich it with other boards to add extra support along with the box bc I'm paranoid about structure failing.

Jeff - great video and easy to follow. When I purchased the shower pan and drain assembly I also asked for the plumbers putty. Hi Jeff. I've been binging your channel as we are looking to renovate our master bath. We have a small corner walk-in closet (more like a step in) and a shower right next to it. We need more closet space. I would like to remove my shower completely from that area and relocate it to where our unused, large jacuzzi tub is, and expand the closet into the old shower area . Our home is on a concrete slab and the shower base is concrete. How would we remove the shower base and make it level with the rest of the floor? Plug the shower drain and properly cut off plumbing? Home was built in 1992.

When installing on a second floor in between joists, are you supposed to support the drain? And how if so? There isnt room enough to have a p trap with a 2x4 under affixed to the joists for support.. i was thinking that when the drain is inserted then the support will be from the actual drain on the pan and that little bit of give in the pipes will act as a flex joint whereas rigid would be more prone to cracking with any movement.. i wouldnt think the pvc joints would leak from that movement over time as they are welded together.. right?

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Thanks for the prompt reply. Just finished watching your hour of Q & A's very informative. Must say CR and gingerale is one of my favorites as well. My dilemma is I am transforming a basement bedroom into a laundry/bathroom. The exterior walls currently are finished. 2 x 3 studs, pink insulation & vapor barrier. From the looks of it the vapor barrier has been compromised in many places and shaudky installed. As I now will be running water to the washing machine and sink can I leave the existing drywall up using it as a barrier for my plumbing and installing a new 2 x 4 wall over it using additional styrofoam insulation without a vapor barrier or will that cause me problems in the future. I will take down all of the present drywall down to the studs if need be.

I've seen a lot of builders level it with some shims and few hundred pounds of cement bags ontop then use closed cell foam under it at some of the pre-wire houses around here. they are pretty good about using enough for it to feel solid under and not push up or out. their building a few hundred houses a year so I'm sure that plumbers had enough experience to know how much to spray before he drops the pan back down.

since there's no Plumbing in the stall that I could see are you able to test the drain to make sure it doesn't leak I'm assuming maybe you hooked it up to the outlet pipe below and maybe put in a bucket of water and was able to reserve it for a period of time to make sure that the gasket and everything was sealed tight and on the sand mixture I saw another video where they put the sand mixture underneath the whole shower pan I'm assuming in your case because of the leveling issues you just added into those areas that needed to be level and that was enough to keep the pan from moving also
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 7 жыл бұрын
This particular shower pan is very rigid and has structure to the outside edges. all that was needed was to level and provide some strength on the interior of the pan. Really not necessary but most home owners don't like the feel of moving acrylic so it is best to fortify the install this way.

I think cement board on top of the wood subfloor is too thick. In all videos I watched, they all put mortar directly on the wood subfloor, this will be problem later when they want to remodel again, ie removing the old shower pan. The purpose of mortar under shower pan is to create support so it will not crack when stepping on it .

What is "sand mix"? is it just wet sand? Is it mortar? How does the drain magically get connected if i am on a slab?
@MrDW-ei1fe
@MrDW-ei1fe 3 жыл бұрын
I'm an apprentice plumber that's set dozens and dozens of shower pans. Sand mix is just quikrete sand topping. You have to use the sand topping because theres very little to no aggregate (little pebbles) that the typical concrete has. This guy didn't really use enough water when mixing it. Not to mention the method he used to level it is long and confusing. The floor is never level so theres no point in trying to predetermine where to pour the concrete if you choose to use concrete. You want your concrete to be on the runny side but not completely fluid. Just a bit more water than what he used. A good guide is 1 gallon of water per 60 lb bag of concrete. If there's no rough in for a shower drain then you obviously can't magically put a shower there. At that point you should hire an experienced plumber with a good reputation.
@steveh7108
@steveh7108 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrDW-ei1fe probably best to go to the flooring section and get a self leveling floor patch. Just like you said no aggregate but it's made for things like this and it's usually got a little latex in it as well. I think this KZfaqr is giving people a lot of bad advice.

I'm replacing a shower pan similar to the one in this video, but I don't want to replace or modify the drain body, which is solvent welded to the drain pipe and both body and pipe are in good condition. Also, I don't have access to the under side of the pan after it's installed, unless I cut a hole in the ceiling below. In this situation, how can I connect the strainer to the drain body? Are my only options to either cut a hole in the ceiling below (to attach the compression ring to the underside of the strainer once the pan is in place) or to install a completely new slip-on drain? Your videos and advice are very helpful, thanks!
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 7 жыл бұрын
There is a drain in where the pipe extends through the floor and the pan is placed over. Once the pan is in stalled there is a gasket ring that compresses onto the pipe to create a seal. This is an option if you don't want to open the ceiling underneath.

I am a Master plumber and back 20 years ago we use to use plumbers putty on shower drains and compression shower drains, after seeing water leaks and stains on ceilings, the putty will eventually dry out, shrink and will start to leak. The compression gasket can leak after a decade, we started to use silicone caulk instead of putty and a all glued shower drain if all possible. Yes the silicone is a mess to clean up, but buying a new ceiling is expensive.

Home Reno Vision DIY I have never heard of that personally. Are you saying that over time, if exposed to water continuously, that a seal like that will eventually leak? I understand the seal between the tiles and the tray does eventually corrode away under certain circumstances but the seal between the tray and the trap isnt exposed like the aforementioned.

I have seen commercial (restaurant) drains that get so much use that practically any seal will eventually break and leak. I'd hate to be the plumber for a penthouse restaurant. LOL

I have an acrylic shower pan liner not reinforced. The install instructions say NO SILICON PRODUCTS MAY TOUCH SURFACE. So that wont work for modern building materials.

Learned a lol. Thank you. I love all the threads below, all these "MASTER plumbers" and armchair quarterbacks. Why are you watching a "how to" video on installing if you are such a grand master plumber? Great job with the comments guys. Some were good questions though. My only comment would be that the music was a little distracting. Other than that I am ready to install my shower drain. I'll be back to complain on how awful it went later on :)

Never use plumber's putty to seal the drain. Clear silicone only. The putty breaks down and manufacturers state not to use it. As a plumber I have had to repair many drains which requires cutting open the ceiling below.

What is the proper rolling ratio of the bucket before you drop the pan and stand on it? Don't worry you don't need to check that it's level or anyting and you don't have to worry about air pockets or voids underneath. The Gremlins will come and fix all of that overnight.

I’d like an opinion on work I’ve had done and paid for. I am afraid to use shower because is eroding as it never hardened. I have several images not sure where there is water as I am guessing some had seeped thru cracked grout.

I use sandcrete from the building store. 1 bag mixed in a pail with about 30% more water than they recommend on the package.

I've a question regarding the drain. I'm presently installing a shower pan in my basement. That might sounds like a stupid question but I was wondering if I need to install a P trap under? Also imagine that the pan is already level flat on the floor, would you recommend to put some sand mix also?
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 5 жыл бұрын
definitely yes on the p trap or you will fill the basement with sewer gas. yes to the sand mix as well. cheers!

I am getting ready to remove my tub and shower and replace it with a walk in shower. I have been watching your bathroom remodel videos and vinyl plank floor install videos and you seem to be the most informative and easiest to understand. I have a question regarding drain connection for the shower pan. On bathtubs the tub drain appears to thread into the drain in the floor. When I watch the drain connections on the shower pans this does not seem to be the same. You installed the drain in the shower pan and then you installed the pan in the shower area. How does the shower pan drain actually connect to the drain pipe? Another question no one addresses in the videos is what happens to the vent tube that connected to the tub, is this no longer needed and if so is this just capped off in the wall?

I was wondering the same thing about the connection to the drain pipe but I'm guessing the plumber's putty creates a seal connecting it when it cures.

hello can anyone know in apartment on 5th floor if i want to remove the old shower pan and to make one level with tiles what do i have to use underneath ? waterproof concrete and then the tiles? or is something else on top of the concrete before i add the tiles ? and what about around lets say do i have to secure something around the tiles ? can someone please answer me

In my experience the best waterproofing system for a custom shower is schluter systems. You need to check with your condo board to determine the acceptable course of action so that your insurance is valid in the event of a water problem down the road.

Great videos. Love watching and learning. What do you do if you’re redoing tile and discover that the shower pan is not level?
@imafool69
@imafool69 4 жыл бұрын
if its not leveled and the pan is not stuck in concrete you could take it out, level the floor and reinstall it. but chance are if it it stuck in cement and you try to remove it it will break. so you decide if its an issue for you depending on how bad it is (meaning does it interfere with drainage)

Could you replace a tub shower with just a shower or would it be better to get another tub shower kit? I don’t like stepping up over the tub to get into the shower, I’m super short so it’s inconvenient and I’ve slipped. Been watching your bathroom builds and would like your opinion (: Also watched your paint video and did my walls while following it and they turned out great!! Saved me lots of money and time not having to buy tarps or painter’s tape!

Awesome video... Thanks! I had a couple quick questions that I am hoping you can answer. What brand/model of shower pan did you use in this video? I am looking for a high quality, solid shower pan that doesn’t feel cheap underfoot, for one of our bathrooms. The one you installed looks pretty solid. We want to tile the walls with subway tile but like the idea of a seamless shower pan. Also why didn’t you put mortar under the other sections of the pan? I know a lot of manufacturers of these types of units require a mortar bed throughout to make the pan more solid. I am just curious if this was a manufacturer recommendation or comes from your professional experience. Thanks!
