A step by step guide to installing a socket in a lath and plaster wall.
The same procedure would be used for light switches, fused spurs, etc...
The plaster products I use in this video were...
www.british-gypsum.com/produc...
For a final finish I use Gyproc Easifill 20 Filler
Thistle Bonding coat for the deep fill
Thistle Finishing or multi finish for the skim.

My god, someone who actually takes their time and is considerate of old plaster. The previous owners graciously cut holes into the plaster/lathe for electrical box. It was a hideous job that I need to fix. You even leveled the boxes. Brilliant.

I didn't have an oscillating tool when I did my outlet. So I used a masontry drill bit and drilled holes around my pencil markings. Then played connect the dots with a jab saw. Once I had an outline I used a jigsaw to cut away the laths and removed the section.

Excellent. I had honestly forgotten what quality work can done. My son's is planning electrical wiring in his home, the contractor bid does not include any plaster work. He mention the the work is going to be "messy". I had plan to do the patch up work, but I am going to mention to the contractor it doesn't have to get " messy" and not to take any short cuts. Work sensible , and have courtesy to the customer. THANK YOU

Hi realnotubutme8254. Yes totally agree. You do not need to wreck a house to rewire it. Try to minimise as much as possible any 'messy' work, and at least make good your chases.

Thanks for the video. I have to relocate a socket my dad installed 20 years ago. Your video shows me everything I was unsure about and a plan B in case the plaster is in a worse state than I hope it is.

This was extremely helpful. I was trying to cut an outlet earlier and my stud finder was going haywire all over the wall. Your wire trick saved me some headache. I was told all the walling was replaced but it seems I was lied to. I'll need to find some way to cut the remaining lath cleanly now that I've hacked most of it away with a drywall saw.

It won't cut the wood lath but a diamond grit grinding blade for grout removal on the multi tool works so much better for going through plaster (and cement/rock lath). Makes so much cleaner of a cut with much less crumbling and damage, wish I had learned that a lot sooner. Really anytime you need to go through it look for tools that grind or are designed for masonry and it works so much better.

Good video, sensible advice and you concentrated upon the task, rather than upon yourself. Too many Sparkies on YT I regret seem to think it's about them, so take twice as long to cover half of the same detail, then miss the important bits! I liked the diagram at the end, covering how to use a long drill to get through the Sole Plate. I have a similar job and was just pondering how best to create the hole in the Sole Plate for the cable to come up, i.e. without making an access hole to achieve this big enough for my dog to climb in! Great, that small tip alone has helped me no end, because getting the Cables up via the Sole Plate was posing an issue in terms of how best to do this. I have a couple to do, and getting the cables up from under the Sole Plate was the main issue (if I wished to do a neat job and not create a huge re-decoration job in the process of adding a few extra Sockets to the Ring Circuit).

Thanks for the comment. I will do a video on drilling through the sole plate. It can be a bit tricky, so I want to do it on a real lath and plaster wall, to show the problems.

How far should the box stick out from the stud for lath and plaster vs. drywall? I think all the boxes have ears for the stud alignment for drywall thickness.

Hi Kevin, I don't have a preferred brand really. The important thing is the depth of the box so you you have the depth for the lugs
