How to Install a Steel Door - Latham's Steel Security Doors

A step-by-step guide on how to install a steel door including install, adjustment and finishing. Ensure you take the appropriate safety precautions before beginning.

Attention! If you are building the door opening around the door I recommend makeing the hole at least 10mm bigger on both sides in the width to enable functional use of the wind-out lugs, or simply don't use them. Knock down frames on double door are flexibe until fitting is complete, getting the two doors to line up needs ample adjustment otherwise the locks don't work!.

Hi @rolllthetape88 thank for you comments, that is absolutely correct, we always recommend that 5mm is left either side to allow for any adjustments to be made for the perfect fit and alignment.

@5:40 so to clarify: The thick door seal with the 'V' shape; The two tips of the 'V' point into the centre of the door? Pausing this Video, shows the 'V' tips pointing into the centre.

Hi @rollthetape88, thanks for your comment, that's correct yes, it should be installed with the 'tails' of the V pointing towards the centre of the door, with the point positioned pointing towards the frame. I am about to buy a 1595x2020 double door for my garage. It will be a new door added to the back. I'll do it DIY and was wondering if I needed a lintel above it or would the steel frame be suffucient? There will be only 2 or 3 courses of brick above it and of course the roof structure. I am asking as on your videos I don't seem to see any lintels and I am not sure it is because of the demonstration only or is it because it is fine that way. I don't mind to pay that extra few quid on a concrete lintel but it wouldn't be the prettiest sight in town, I'd prefer the bricks if that would work. Thanks!

Thanks for your message, so in regards to our wall we did have overhead support built in for safety. In terms of your garage, unfortunately it's not something we can advise on, and would recommend speaking to a builder to see what would be required.

Does it need to be raised off the floor, I want it for an inner door inside garage. Can frame sit on floor. Thanks

it can sit on the floor, just don't buy the addtional sill. I would consider some type of threshold though to stop water running underneath, even if you did a mold of self leveler 10mm high. depends what your internal wall is.

Do you have any doors you can put smart locks on, for example, a Yale Smart lock on the door?

Hi Robert, thanks for your message. Unfortunately our doors are not compatible with the yale smart locks, but we do have code lock options if restricted or specific access is required to areas.

how would this be fitted on a sectional concrete garage, would it be safe to drill into the concrete sections ? ive heard they can crack/split

Hi, we would suggest installing a timber or steel sub-frame for the door, and then fitting it into there using either our wood or metal fixing kit.

Hi, many thanks for your comment. You can indeed install our doors internally into wooden frames. It's worth noting that all of our doors come pre-hung in their frame, but can still be installed inside the frame aperture. We would however recommend removing the wooden frame to maximize width available.

Whats the STC rating on these doors?

Hi, thanks for your message. The sound transmission class depends on the door type. We offer 3 different duties on our doors: budget, security and high security which achieve 30dB, 35dB and 38dB ratings respectively.

Is in normal to fill the side cavities with foam, like you would do with pvc doors, or is there no reason to? Would it seal better?

Thanks for you comment. The door frame itself is insulated with mineral wool on our heavy and ultra duty doors. You can add insulation to the side and over head panels though for additional thermal insulation during insulation.

Thanks, I've fixed my mistake. I put the seal on the lock edge of the door frame rather than the door stop section of the frame. Doh@@lathamssteeldoors

Hi @leecornwall8381 thanks for your comment. You would indeed need a lintel, our wall here has got a single leaf angle lintel as it only has a few courses above.
