The only addition I’d mention is that starting with a full tile on the end may yield in unusually small cuts at the end. Always double check your layout for symmetry.

Thank you for making it look conquerable. I just set my tiles. Tomorrow, I'll grout. Looks good. Also, thanks for telling me not to get hung up on the wet saw. I used a manual tile cutter, a file, and a grinder to make my far too many cuts. Turns out, I bought way too many tiles. Better than not enough, and HD will let me return them.

Dang, you're amazing! I DIY everything from electrical, carpentry, plumbing, but tile is one of those things I've always felt nervous about. Your video makes me feel confident to tackle my own tile job and not blow money on hiring it out. We did a major bathroom remodel at our house and I hired out the tiling job, spent a $1,000 on labor for a small tiling portion, and it sucked... all the tiling was at bad angles, because they didn't use spacers, and they set the mud wrong. And I spent $1,000 on labor instead of $1,000 on tools!

Thank you for validating my personal preference for premixed thin set. 😁 I also use premixed grout, but that's just me. My favorite tool I ever bought is my inexpensive, fixed-base, wet tile saw. Hi. Great video & looks like you two had loads of fun. Questions. To stagger the tiles, do you really just need to start row 2 with a 1/2 a tile? Or, do you have to 1/2 a tile in other rows to keep them staggered? Also, my kitchen has about the same amount of area to do as in this video. I couldn’t tell, do you install the tiles in sections or row by row all the way around the kitchen? We are taking the micro & cabinet above the stove out & putting in a stain steel vent. Our ceilings are 12’ it’s been suggested to take the tile all the way to the ceiling in that area. Do we install the stove to ceiling area separately? For example when installing the backsplash all the way around the kitchen, do we stop at each side of the stove & continue on with the backsplash then go back & fill in the stove area to the ceiling? Hope that makes sense. Thanks.

This was fantastic - thanks so much for this! I'm about to embark on my first attempt at this (just remodeled my kitchen) and have watched your video at least 5 times already (trying to build up the courage to tackle this). Does the type of mortar change if I have my heart set of glass subway tiles? (The tiles are 4'x12' "Bright White" color - - not see through, and intend to use white mortar). Also the walls (drywall) that they're going on are painted with semi-gloss paint (prior owners... not me!), so I plan on hitting the walls with my random orbital with like 80 grit to rough it up first.

Pretty good but I always end the tile at the gable end with tile edging. Also I usually center the tile in the range area because that is a main focal point and that’s where most people look. Same with sink area. I grout the bottom by the countertop as well, I just put silicone on after grout is dry. Looks a bit better.

Hey thanks for the video! We're about to embark on this project and I have a few questions: 1. If the tile isn't a perfect fit, meaning a row has to be horizontally cut; where do you put that horizontally cut piece? On the top or the bottom of the wall? 2. When meeting corners, what's the best practice? 3. When using tile with indented & ornate designs and size difference, is there a best lay-out practice? Or is it all random?

Yes, a grinder will work for making cuts that will be covered (i.e. outlets) but you will need a snap cutter or wet saw to make the field cuts. Do not use pre-mixed "mortar" (actually thinset), it is a poor adhesive. You can, however, use tile 'mastic' for non-wet areas if you don't want to mix thinset. If your tile doesn't have a matching bullnose, use a Schluter trim at the end of the countertop so you don't have an ugly raw tile edge. Use a full width tile to start the first row so the cut tiles will be under the upper cabinets. On the window wall, start by centering the tile on the window so you don't have different size tile on either side of the window. Otherwise, great job.😐

The general rule with tile at least when doing it in a bathroom is you need at least 80% coverage on the tile if you were to remove a piece. It doesn’t matter if you can hear a scrape on the wall, you have to remove a “test piece” of installed tile and see if the mortar is actually adhering to the tile (80% coverage). That will tell you if it’s enough. Again that’s how you do it in a bathroom so I assume kitchen is the same. Although kitchens don’t get nearly any moisture like bathrooms do.
@charlieday5871
@charlieday5871 3 жыл бұрын
Tile industry standards require minimum mortar coverage of 80% in dry areas and 95% in wet (showers) or exterior areas.

To add on to this when you set the tile in place you also want to slide it back and forth to compress the ridges and ensure proper adhesion. Hope this helps people.

Great video! In the market to purchase my first home, and might have to learn how to do some home improvements ourselves. Will be using this video as reference if we ever need to install our own backsplash. Thanks! :)

OMG, thanks for posting this video. I didn't know they made a pre mix mortar. Now that i know this, it makes it easier for me and I know I can do my kitchen now. I just wished they made a pre mix grout. I might have to check to see if they do make one, if not you made it look easier than I was thinking it was. Thanks again.

I also noticed that they make a pre mix grout made by the same company. Have you every used a pre mix grout?

i like how she asked, "how much mortar is too much or too little?" and the guy was like "what?" haha! sometimes folks know too much and don't understand new people questions. and it shows that guys understand language differently. it took him a minute to figure out what she was asking.

Haha yup. She always asks the great questions. Sometimes I’ll ask her questions just to get the conversation flowing

I was thinking what do you mean you don't understand her question. Honestly that was me and my man for three looooong days installing our kitchen - he is a qualified builder/civil landscape... I am an ece teacher/artist/baby photographer. Polar opposite thought patterns. Thankfully we made it through.
