SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse
Shopping List for Installing a Whole-House Water Softener:
- Water softener
- Solder
- Copper pipe and valves
- 3/8-inch-diameter plastic tubing
- Compress fittings
- Hose clamps
- Air-gap fitting
- Salt
Tools List for Installing a Whole-House Water Softener:
- Tubing cutter
- Soldering iron
Steps for Installing a Whole-House Water Softener:
1. Turn off the water at the meter.
2. Use a tubing cutter to tap into the existing cold-water pipe.
3. Connect the water softener's resin tank to the cold-water pipe by soldering on an assembly of copper pipe and three valves.
4. Run a length of 3/8-inch-diameter plastic tubing from the resin tank to the salt tank; connect each end of the tubing with compress fittings.
5. Use a hose clamp to attach the drain line to the drain elbow on the resin tank.
6. Install an air-gap fitting to the drain that leads to the sewer pipe.
7. Attach the water softener's discharge hose to the air-gap fitting with a hose clamp.
8. Hook the discharge hose from the washing machine onto the air-gap fitting.
9. Fill the salt tank with salt.
10. Turn the water back on.

I just replaced the softener in my house and plumbed the kitchen faucet water back on the softener. (Previous owners bypassed it, like you’re referring to). We have a water purifier for drinking water and saw no use to run nasty contaminated water through the kitchen faucet. There is barely enough sodium in the water to affect your diet, unless you’re on a low sodium diet.

Yes, salt water will kill your plants that is why softeners only treat interior water lines, and not the outside water in hose bibs. I wouldn't use it in a fish tank, but have read you can use deionized (DI) water in an auarium. Also hot tub companies don't like softened water. Be safe :)

My softener is in my crawl space. The hard part is getting everything through the 2'x2' square entry hole for the crawl space. Appliances in my crawl space sit on top of paver bricks rather than the dirt floor though. Also, my crawl space is NOT open to the outside. You don't want water appliances in an open crawl space that can get below freezing.

@@gallihyde I looked up information regarding pex and cancer, it seems like there is only a risk initially and after a period of time it would be cleaned of the chemicals when it was manufactured. because of the minerals in the water you're not able to lather up with soap as easy when you have hard water. Meaning you have to use more soap to get a lather. when you soften the water you get a lot more of a lather when you're using soap in the shower or in a dishwasher and washing machine

Can a ro system soft the hard water????
@GGs319
@GGs319 6 жыл бұрын
RO systems are typically installed only at the kitchen sink because you don't need to shower or flush the toilet with "pure" water. Typically speaking, people install a water softener to treat the water that goes on you (shower/dishes/etc.) and install a RO system for the water that goes in you (drinking/cooking.) You can put in a RO system without a softener, however your filters are likely to see more wear.
@oldtwinsna8347

Whole house RO would be extremely expensive in installation and upkeep, plus take up a lot of space, and waste a lot of water. Hence it is not commonly done.

After the husband peaces out, the plumber hands the wife an invoice demanding the deed to the house, on top of the installation cost. After all, the best way to get rid of hard water stains and deposits, is to just dump it, like they did with the toilet.
@AZOffRoadster

When I visited relatives with soft water, in the shower I always felt too slick and not yet clean. Now I'm in the midst of a crisis because this house MAY have had a softener in it by design, and because of that, some PEX plumbing is under the garage slab and leaking up thru the hole in the slab and flooding a bedroom instead of just going up into the attic and being noticed immediately.. I might have noticed sooner, but most of the water was soaked up by my vinyl collection, audio equipment, camping gear, boxes, etc. Storage room. At least it's PEX. Could be much worse, right? No. Property manager is considering this whole screwed up system. Laundry room hot on right. Ice maker might be hot, also. The plumbing could have been extremely simple and all contained it the attic, straight down the centerline of the building. Easy peasy, even WITH a softner. Shyt contractor/designer. '95 btw Edit: Forgot part of the story. Most of the water/mold was around the air return duct and got aerosolized and fed back to me constantly since last November at least. Mostly same symptoms as covid.

In my house the original owners conditioned both spigots and when I'm done replacing the softener only one of them will be conditioned. To get both of them off the softener I would have to tear up a bunch of dry wall and re-plumb it.

Hmmm. As a kid, I know we had the hard water running to the sink. I assume it bypassed the softener while all other water flowed through the softener.
@youdagoob
@youdagoob 7 жыл бұрын
You are correct. In my last house I installed a softener bypassing the kitchen-sink-cold and outside faucet runs. Why would you want to drink salt water or use salt water to sprinkle your lawn and garden? And no, softened water doesn't "taste the same" as stated in the video. It's salty.
@GGs319

if it tasted salty, your equipment was malfunctioning. The taste is a preference, however and some people don't like the taste of soft water.

That softener was massive for 17. People forget you want the resin to backwash at most every two weeks, even that is long.

This is overly simplistic. I've seen installations where hot water is softened, and only cold water in bathrooms and laundry. The softener is installed ahead of the hot water heater with branches elsewhere. Also, the kitchen sink facet is often times left hard with a bypass so you are drinking "mineral" water vs. softened water. Water to outside spigots should be hard too, otherwise you'll be watering plants with softened water. Some people wash cars with outside spigots, in which case you may want it soft. And while I know they say the exchange and flush gets rid of the salt... there is some residual sodium.

The location of our house's shut-off valve isn't where it would be, so installing a water softener or whole house water filter is pretty much impossible.

yes it does make the water slightly salty, not good for people on a low sodium diet!!! i have a single faucet for cold drinking that has a charcoal filter for chlorine removal, water tastes awesome. the rest of my house is soft water.

When he said “it’s not dangerous to drink the water it’s only cosmetic” that’s entirely not true. The minerals are inorganic and your body has a hard time processing them. My blood calcium level was always high until I stopped dring tap water because of high calcium levels. If it can clog your pipes it can also clog your arteries.

Best to install an reverse osmosis (R/O) filter system under kitechen sink for drinking or use a salt free water conditioning unit if applicable to your area.
