This is the second time installing this old windshield in my Porsche 911. This time I have the correct aluminum trim which is very difficult to install correctly especially if it used and bent. Watch how I get the rubber lip over the cars flange using a simple string trick.

Listen to this man! He is wise! 😆 This job, at its easiest, is a huge PITA. What Tom did with having the windshield in first and forming the trim around is gonna be very helpful. The trim is soooo pliable, and if it gets too out of shape, it could be almost impossible to ever get it back (I actually gave up trying to get my old trim back and bought new.) Side note - many people say to buy original gasket (if not reusing), which is sound advice, but I actually had better luck with an aftermarket gasket. Also, there is a little mark on the outer face of the gasket that indicates 'center' which helps insure you are close to having the gasket correctly secured to the glass (the corners, if not aligned properly, can make getting the trim on even more difficult).

Thank you. This is a difficult job that requires a lot of thought and time. I hope this video helps others because my situation is the worst case scenario: 1) previously wrecked car in right front 2) aftermarket seal URO 3) cheap aftermarket windshield 4) mangled OEM trim. I show this because everything on a car is fixable with enough effort.

Doing this by yourself is difficult, god job. I've done several of that style of window. String method is best. Had one person on the outside pushing with one person on the inside pulling the string. Silicon lube really helps if getting stuck.

The first time I put the window in, I had a helper to push. It helps, but too much push and the rubber gets trapped and won't lift over. It's a song and dance for sure. Best to have someone on the outside to keep the window from slipping out. That is frustrating after the string has already gone past. I didn't use any soap or silicone this time.

Great job. I knew about the string trick but i'd never actually seen it done. The sealant in those seals is really important so that water can't stay underneath there. That's very bad spot for rust..

Always loved the way this aluminum trim looked vs the blacked out look. Just looks classier to me. That car is sweet!!! It’s probably because of the sugar scoops 😬- I’m starting to like them now. Great job as always Tom.

I agree it looks great and matches the rest of the car. My decklid grill is black. Some days I like it and some days I think about polishing it too?

Tom, nice job. I just installed a new windshield in my '73 a few months ago. It's a big job, but very satisfying when it comes out right. I know Mac is a lightweight racer, but what are you doing for a dashboard? A real dash would have had to have been already installed prior to the windshield going in. I still don't like the sugar scoops, but that's just me.

Great job, nice preparation and (from here) looked like a pretty easy fit. What prompted the screen change? I'd be somewhat tempted to try a 964's trimless windscreen on my SC (all black trim, so no chrome anyway.)

Thanks! It did go in rather easy. My car didn't come with a windscreen, so I bought the new one a few years ago. This time I reinstalled it to put the trim back in. Good call on the 964 seal. That will look smooth.

Just wondering if this windshield is original vintage glass or modern day restoration glass. Did you source the gasket from URO (i know you've gotten parts from them in the past) or from Porsche? Congrats on a job well done.... it looks Great!

Best of luck. I would keep the compressor switched off when you aren't using it or on vacation, etc.

The local dealership did the window for me, it took them a couple of weeks.....had to order new parts etc. The fit in the corners is still not good, the seal is creeping in. Any suggestions on what to do?

The dealership installed a window on a vintage car? I'm surprised. The aluminum trim is key to flexing the seal out in the corners. I would shape a block of wood with the approximate radius of the corner and then gently hammer the on the trim to push it outward toward the corners. It probably needs to be pushed outward and inward. Also is the window even pushed in all the way? When looking from inside the car is the rubber fully seated over the flange?

Yeah, it was a mistake but I wanted original parts & the insurance company paid for the complete thing. It seems to be in all the way but I will try the method with wooden block 👍🏻. Thanks!
