How to install an air conditioner in a side sliding window.

a quick video showing how i installed a window air conditioner unit into a side sliding window. with this method you won't have to drill into your siding and is very secure. I used a 1/4 inch mdf board to cover the open area and painted the outside of it white so it didn't look bad from the outside. I didn't use plexiglass because the curtain will be covering the whole window.

I've been searching for the safest way to install a window AC unit on the 2nd floor. Like you said I don't want it to fall down to kill anyone. I've been thinking about using heavy wood 2X4's but wasn't sure how it should be framed with respect to the existing window socket until I came across this video. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. My search stops right here, and thank you for sharing this idea!!

Ingenious! Neighbor gave us her old unit but it didn’t come with any brackets, etc. Looks like yours has a bracket on the top of the unit. Can I get by with just putting the 2x4 directly onto the unit? I plan to use my Kreg jig to connect all the wooden pieces. So to clarify, you didn’t screw the border wooden pieces to your window frame, correct? Thanks for sharing your solution. Lori

If it doesn't have the fin on top, this method wouldnt be as safe. You might have to modify the unit. Home depot sells something that would work but you would have to take the unit apart to attach it. Some units are made to slide out of the metal shell. I dod not screw the 2x3's to the window frame. You can get some velcro like stuff fron home depot. Its marketed as picture hangers. I put those on the bottom.

That kinda what I wanna do to mine lift window or remove bottom window put in a permanent frame to slide window unit in then have a painted board to slide over bolts on outside when I remove it in winter or just leave it in if I want.

Did you screw in the 2x3s into the trim, or used some type of sealant?

i used stick on velcro at the bottom so it didnt move. thats it.

Did you use a supporting bracket in the back? Or is it completed supported by the weed frame?

The only thing i used was velcro tape on the window sill to hold the bottom in place.

Ok thanks. That's what I guessed. It seems the 2x4s are strong enough to counter the natural tilting/flipping of the AC unit.

Ya. In my opinion though, especially if its on the second floor, if someone wants to get in, they will get in anyway. If you have a first-floor window, i would add an inside panel to be safe.
