Ask This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey helps a homeowner add an industrial looking faucet to his kitchen sink
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse
Cost: $250
Skill Level: Moderate
Tools List for Installing an Industrial Kitchen Sink:
Basin Wrench
Adjustable Open End Wrench
Screwdriver
Shopping List:
Faucet
Plumber’s Putty
Steps:
1. Before doing any plumbing work, ensure the water is turned off to the fixture.
2. Use a basin wrench to loosen the nuts holding the old faucet in place.
3. Water supply connections will vary by manufacturer and faucet. It’s often easier to make some of these connections on the countertop before installing the faucet in the sink.
4. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure the correct installation and order of nuts, washers, and waterproof gaskets. Depending on the faucet, some may require plumber’s putty.
5. Before tightening from below, ensure the faucet handle is oriented correctly and is square to the sink.
6. Once the faucet is secured, connect the water supply hoses to the faucet and shut off valve.
Resources:
Richard installed the Parma Single Handle Pre-Rinse Kitchen Faucet, manufactured by Danze (www.danze.com/).

I did a similar change a few years ago at home. The sink is made of stainless steel and I had to make the hole bigger than the one for the previous faucet, that took me an hour of an extra travel to the store (it's 20 kms, 12 miles, away from home) and get some special drill bit for that. And then I had to go again because those flexible pipes (I don't remember if they have a special name) were so old (over 25 years) the rubber inside was not flexible anymore and they had to be replaced since they cracked while handling them. Add close to another extra hour come and go But even considering that my new faucet was a little bit more complicated than the one in the video (it has this extra flexible pipe so you can pull the faucet almost one meter away, something the one in the video does not have), if you have the right tools and if the access to the back of the sink is not too complicated, something around half an hour total is a nice time. And now that I remember, I had to change another faucet somewhere else. This had quite a poor access and I would really have benefit from having that special tool, which I didn't have. I think it took a friend and I less than an hour to change. I mean, it all depends on accessibility to the back of the sink and the tools you have. If you're doing it on your own, somewhere between half an hour and a whole hour will be right. Take into consideration that you may, as I did, check first if the box has all the parts they say (imagine finding there's something missing half way...) and also probably a dry fit on a table so you get the idea.

How did theirs come out so easy and carefree??? I been working on mine for 3 days between work and first it leaked everywhere!!!! I did not see them use any silicone, any teflon tape, any megaloc, any plumber’s putty or anything. Not one mention of turning on the main waterline slowly to check for leaks. This video is too glamorized! You mean to tell me they had zero issues and everything worked perfectly with no frustrations of any kind???😳

🙄 WRONG! 🙄 You never traveled outside your city much, did you? Almost 1 out of 5 homes in the USA connect to a septic system. Most plumbing codes forbid the connection of a garbage disposal to a septic tank. The design of a septic system does not allow for ground up undigested particles. Usage of a disposal will lead to leach field failure, costing thousands to replace. Thus many state and municipal codes forbid it.
