Not to spoil the fun but here's a much cleaner, easier way (no soldering or removing head unit, etc.) guaranteed to work because I just did it on my 2001 Boxster S: 1. Disconnect the CD-changer as described in the excellent video above and shove the data cable back into the carpet hole. (Optional: leave changer out of car and reduce weight by about 2 pounds) 2. Convert the two RCA connectors to female (using adapters from Radio Shack, etc.) 3. Plug a 6ft Stereo RCA - to - Stereo Mini cable into the now female RCA connectors. 4. Run the stereo mini through the grommet behind the CD-changer and then through a little slice you make in the the large firewall grommet behind the battery. (Remove the battery retainer bolt, leave battery connected, and slide the battery over to the right a few inches to reveal the grommet.) 6. Get under the left-side dash. The inside of the grommet is about 8 inches above the accelerator pedal in US cars. Pull the cable through and run it to wherever under the dash. I drilled a hole in the back of the little removable storage box under the Becker head unit and poked the stereo-mini cable through so it's right where I can store my phone while on the road. I have about 2 feet of cable so I can pull it out to operate the phone.

Hi, I did the same thing as you except I connected a Bluetooth dongle at the CD changer aux splitter. However, I cannot seem to force the pcm to accept the CD as an audio source. How did you manage it? Thanks
@thetechcorner72044 жыл бұрын
@@Buckthebarbarian maybe the bluetooth dongle needs power?
@Buckthebarbarian4 жыл бұрын
@@thetechcorner7204 I figured it out; the car does not like it when there is a CD audio source without the power cable being connected. I just reinserted the CD changer with the cable and left it as is. I put in one CD that I found that plays on a loop and I can change tracks with my phone. Easy enough!

I need to do this to a 1999 996- So in a nutshell- RCA converter jacks make to female that originally go into cd changer- (leave power to cd changer). Then… hook an RCA to Aux cord (to your conversion RCA jacks) and run that into the cab through firewall (grommet Above accelerator pedal). Seems very simple…. Almost too simple.. odd the head unit won’t go to CD input when the changer isn’t powered…..
@davidbarney11610 жыл бұрын
worked wonderfully - thanks! Also sounds better (to my ears at least) with an iPhone than with the cd changer. One thing: to get the head unit out it is much easier to remove the plastic surround of the air conditioning control (it just pulls out), then unscrew and remove the aircon control. Then you can push the head unit out from the back.

I would like to point out that this only works for the newer CR-220 headunit. Older CR-210s that are used in early Boxsters and 993s don't seem to support switching to AUX. You can always buy a chinese AUX/USB/SD module that plugs into the Becker headunits and emulates the CD changer. They cost as much as a semi-decent aftermarket headunit, but the OEM Becker units look a million times better than the disco lights you find in Civics.

Very helpful video, thanks a lot! In theory, couldn't you connect the RCA audio cables that go to the CD changer to a female RCA to male 3.5mm converter and then run that cable back into the interior of the car along the same route that the CD changer cables take (would probably be super annoying, but I really don't want to cut into the factory harness or have to solder). Once you got it through, couldn't you just enable the AUX option as you did? You mentioned in another comment that a CD would have to be running in the changer for a setup such as this to work, but I don't see how the radio would be able to tell the difference between us soldering into the factory harness or connecting an adapter to the CD changer RCA cables. Again, thanks for the video, very well thought out and easy to follow.

@alhollis218 жыл бұрын
If a decent area exist to run cable through to cabin, why not just use a 3.5mm to rca to trick the car it is receiving right and left signals from the cd changer? Maybe you would have to have the cd changer loaded at all times and the display may read the cd data. That may be the only caveat. Thoughts? I may attempt as a super easy trick.

just a thought but it would have been easier to get a 3.5 mm to dual mono(The red and white cables you unpluged from the cd charger) and attach it to the cd changer audio wires and run it to the passanger compartment of your car...
@jenniesgarage10 жыл бұрын
Hi, I thought a lot about doing that, and almost went that route, but I decided against it because I couldn't find an easy way through the firewall. Another issue with that setup would be that in order for the radio to accept an input from that line, a cd would have to be running in the changer.

Just go to your nearest stealership (dealership ;). As long as you can prove ownership of the car (title or whatever) they shud give u the code. At least thats how it worked with my BMW.

@jenniesgarage10 жыл бұрын
biturboism Hi! I'm not sure if they are a standard pin or not It might be a GM weatherpack style pin. Another idea is you could get an aftermarket female plug, and a standard plug, and then splice in the new wires between them. That way there wouldn't be any intrusion into the factory harness.
