This time I setup an oil cooler in my Track Car to keep OIL temps well under control. With the addition of a thermostat and some sensors, everything that needs oil should be perfect for the track! ⇊ More ⇊

@@Bbeavis I do know that from the engine the oils priority is to the filter first then the cooler and back to the engine. Btw. What is the best orientation for the cooler to be mounted. Fittings facing upright, fittings facing sideways or fittings facing downwards? Thanks !

@@nxtgen2b416 I don't see why it matters, the oil is pumped through the system anyway...

One of the questions when writing for your license as a mechanic... From the pump, it goes to the outside of the oil filter, and there it is forced through the filter media to the center, where it exits into the oil galleries inside the engine. The oil filter also has a bypass valve to keep the pressure from dropping too low if the filter becomes clogged.

So far things have looked perfectly fine... more track testing will provide better data on how it's working but I'm confident it'll be perfect.

Filter is always first right after the pump. Plus, that inline thermostat allows 10-20% of by-pass so you don't thermo-shock your engine when it does open fully (most thermostatic oil blocks and take-offs/sandwiches should feature this!). That in mind, if you put the filter behind the thermostat, you'll not be effectively filtering your engine until the thermostat opens! Yikes!

Very interesting video mate! Why don't you like the position of the oil cooler? Seems to me it's in a pretty good location. What would the ideal location be?
@Bbeavis
@Bbeavis 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think having coolers stacked the way they are is a little bit sub par, and the oil cooler is the 'hottest' of the three... so it should probably be last, not first. Where else do you mount it? I have no idea! In the wheel well, under the car... there are many options, but sometimes other parts of the car get in the way.
@rob105motorsport
@rob105motorsport 6 жыл бұрын
RHS wheel well and use the fog light to duct air to it and the brakes is a good idea. Otherwise, the oil cooler should be stacked behind the radiator with the intercooler out the front as you suggested - in that case get rid of the thermostat as the arrangement helps bring oil to temp' initially (and thermostats impede flow). That's my view on it anyhow. Vid's are great, mate!

By having the filter inline with the new thermostat for the cooler, are you cutting off filter flow when the thermostat is closed?
@Bbeavis
@Bbeavis 6 жыл бұрын
Good question, that's very important consideration. In part 2 I'll show you how the flow works with a nifty little diagram. But rest assured my setup always sends oil through the filter even when the thermostat is closed.

Thanks for your video. I am looking at a similar Setrab cooler. Why didn't you go for a thermostatic sandwich plate? was it because you wanted to relocate the oil filter?

great vid but i just dont like the idea of covering half your intercooler with a hot oil cooler
@Bbeavis
@Bbeavis 4 жыл бұрын
It may not be ideal but the oil needs all the cooling it can get. The alternative would be to try find some other location to mount the cooler, but these cars are so small so there is not a lot of real estate.

Great video as always! Do you plan on any sort of wire mesh on the front of your inlet to keep larger debris out of all those heat exhangers? Some of our tracks here in Southern California are notorious for taking out radiators and oil coolers when someone in front of you cuts a corner and kicks up rocks.
@Bbeavis
@Bbeavis 6 жыл бұрын
I hadn't considered it, and I rarely see anything like that locally on other cars here. Either we don't get as much on track debris here, or people just like to live dangerously.

The only issue with filter after cooler is the potential for the cooler to slough aluminium debris, which will have to pass your bearings before they can reach the filter.
