As a Canadian, just wanted to thank you guys for continually working with Profitec/ECM to push the envelope on innovation! April last year, the machines got the PID/steam pressure upgrade, and now basically a year later, this flow control mod that's only available on one other machine (at this price point)! Way to elevate this machine to rival the performance of a GS/3 (at least on a domestic scale). I hope this mod will eventually become more widely available (*cough*Canada*cough*) so I can kit out my Pro 700 as well!

Hi LuckyDragon, Thank you for the comment! Working closely with manufacturers on these types of innovations is very important to us! The FCD was a request of ours that's been under development for about a year. First saw an early prototype in action during a visit to the Profitec/ECM production facility in Milan in July of 2018. Here's a video with background on the Profitec/ECM philosophy I shot last year in Milan. Also get a peek at their facilty in Italy: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gZaCfJijyeCYh6s.html First saw the steam/PID upgrade at SCA 2017 in Seattle - another request of ours! The FCD is very new! Just received the prototype and shipping versions a few weeks ago. I'm sure it will not be long until they are more widely available. Marc

If all you are making are non-milk based drinks or smaller Capps and flat whites, just crank up your steam boiler to 260 and stay with your original. With the 260, frothing is easy-as with 300ml pitchers. However for lattes using 500 ml pitchers and larger, the increased pressure really, really helps maintain the roll.@@Smirnoff44

Hi .... I have 2 questions for the experts.... 1. I noticed that on other video sites and instructions they unscrew the bottom part of the E61 brew group and insert the spring that comes with the ECM and Profitec sets. Seems it is a 'harder' spring. Is this an important part of the process? You must have had a reason for not changing it.... maybe you could share with us? 2. I installed my ECM FCD as you show and at closed (with the new handle that can spin all the way round) I still get water flowing flow (about 2.7g/second). Is that normal? Can I get around this? Thank you! Rafael

The flow control doesn't really control the brew pressure, you can control it to a point, but your max brew pressure is going to be limited by your pump or OPV pressure I believe and the coffees resistance (if ground and tamped properly) so lets say it's started off nice and slow your getting a good stream now you ramp it up to say 11ml / sec stock flow rate or close to it, would that make any difference vs only ramping it up to 4 ml/sec if the brew pressure is gong to be 9 bars in either case.

Hi Axel, Thanks for the comment, purchase and question! You do not have to have this, but it is available if you want. Flow control gives you yet another variable to control an extraction. You can mimic what is done on commercial machines like Slayer, LM GS3 or manual lever machines. Options abound but you could for instance to a long low flow rate pre-infusion then bump up to full flow and tail flow off at the end. If interested, the FCD is available now to previous Pro 700 (coming soon for ECM Synchronika) WLL customers here: www.wholelattelove.com/products/profitec-e61-flow-control-device Marc

Great video again, wonder if pressure profiling will be the next big thing in e61 shot pulling... I’m guessing this will reduce blondong at the end of the shot. Do you need to install the pressure gauge in the group head if you machine has a pressure gauge already installed. Now you got me thinking of the next mod on my machine.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 5 жыл бұрын
Hi CC, Pressure and flow are related. Ramping down the flow and/or pressure at the end of a shot may reduce blonding but there are of course other variables involved like the coffee, dose, grind, etc. The gauge on the group measures pressure much closer to the coffee and after the flow control. The gauge on the machine face shows hydraulic pressure prior to the flow control device so it will read full pressure regardless of what the flow is. Marc

I want it! I want it! But I cannot find it on the WLL store site :-( I have a WBT so I assume the pre-infusion on the Profitec partially negates the need for the pressure filter but I can lower the pressure near the end of the pull. Does this make sense? Any suggestions for those with the WBT system?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Thomas, Very cool right! Just became available as individual component yesterday! Here's a link to the Pro 700 FCD: www.wholelattelove.com/products/profitec-e61-flow-control-device There is some overlap and a big difference with a BWT system with in-line pressure regulator. Through the pressure regulator you can set a constant pre-infusion pressure for use prior to the pump coming on. After the pump is on the pressure regulator setting has no affect on the extraction. With the FCD you can manipulate the flow rate at anytime during the extraction. So you could get a long low flow pre-infusion with the machine pump on, then ramp up to full flow/brew pressure, then tail of the flow at the end to avoid over-extraction. Marc

Looks good, but an electric motor speed controller will probably work equally good or much better than mechanical profiler. Very, very much cheaper too. It will work on vibration and vane rotary electric pumps. What are your thoughts on the idea? I believe that is the trend that is being used on fully programmable automatic espresso machines selling for thousands of dollars. As a matter of fact, I will install one for my Lelit Victoria once I get it back for warranty repair in New Jersey.

hi there, i recently purchased an ecm synchronica with flow control pre-installed. when the device is fully closed it seems to still pump out about 3.3ml per second which is much quicker than the slow drip in your video. i am also unable to effectively ramp up and down pressure gradually... it stays at zero for a few seconds than quickly ramps up to 9 bar. i am unable to get it to stop at 2, 4 or 6 bar etc. even when it is completely closed. is there anyway to fix this at all? would i need to make the nut tighter so that the device closes off even more? or is there a chance that the gage was not installed with teflon tape and this is affecting pressure? (just spit balling ideas). many thanks for your vids! aleks

Hi ms, You are welcome for the vids! Very easy fix. When the valve is fully closed are you suppose to have drip coming out? if no what kind of adjustment can you make to stop it from dripping?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jean, Thanks for the question. When fully closed there should be no drip. To correct loosen the black flow control knob by turning counterclockwise. That releases a set screw which will allow you to move the sleeve it's screwed into up a bit to give clearance below the sleeve. With that you should be able to close the valve fully. Once you can, tighten the black knob so the sleeve holds position. Hope that helps! Marc

I can only unscrew the round knob and was still unable to take out the entire “cover” . Also, is it normal that water still flow through the group head despite turning the knob to the “off” position. Thanks!
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi oc, It is not normal for water to still flow when valve is completely closed. If you are getting flow when closed then you need to calibrate. I've not heard of a v.3 of the FC device. Wonder if that's a retailer's designation? Anyway, loosen the knob and use a thin plastic something to get under and lever up the cover if possible. If design of your FC is similar to one in video this should work. May be a bit stubborn to move at first so keep at it. If you can get the cover to move up a bit then you should be able to close valve further and stop flow completely. When you tighten the knob back down to hold cover in place do it when the valve is closed and maintain a small space below the bottom lip of cover and metal below it so valve can fully close in future. Hope that helps! Marc

@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Trooper, Thanks for the question. The machine gauge indicates the internal pressure of the brew water circuit. So long as there's coffee in the portafilter of a sufficiently fine grind size the machine's gauge will indicate 9 bar of pressure when brewing. The gauge on the group indicates the actual pressure on the coffee puck which can be adjusted using the flow control device. Have a video in production now on the Flow Control Device and how to use it on the Pro 500, 600 and 700. Look for that to be posted in the next few days. Hi PL, Thanks for the question. I have not seen that before. Confirm there's a white washer in between the group and mushroom nut. It may not be visible with flow control mounted so you may need to loosen the mushroom nut to view. If having minor leaks and residue build over time I would remove mushroom nut, thoroughly clean area and remount. There is no specific torque recommendation. Use relatively firm pressure.

Hi michael, Sure! Before backflushing open your flow control valve 1.25 turns. With a backflush disc in your portafilter add 3g (~1/2 teaspoon) of Cafiza to the portafilter. Mount the PF and run the pump for 10 seconds then off - repeat 4 times. Remove PF and rinse. Remount PF and run 5 cycles of pump on for 10 seconds to rinse. Marc

Whole Latte Love,thanks for the knowledge. I ordered a set of FCD form a local dealer who has the first version only(the set is for Profitec 700 actually),for my ECM Synchronika, and I am wondering if I could set it to run anti-clockwisely, say, from 2-4ml/s for pre-infusion to 8-10ml/s for extraction. My machine runs at about 12ml/s, and I prefer the first version because of the larger knob,which I think is easier to handle.So the major difference between 2 versions is the knob? It could turn more than 1 circle for the second version

I’ve installed a flow control device from Coffee Sensor in my Profitec Pro 700 and it worked perfectly. Sometimes when I leave on position for a while it gets hard to bring it back. Is this is normal due to high temperature? Other question, it reaches the normal flow of mushroom head when I turn it only between 1/4 & 1/2 position (the range is small). Is this is OK? Or I must purchase the one manufactured by Profitec? Pls let me know because I’m really puzzled 😰

I noticed that as well, It just feels a little stiffer to move sometimes, other times nice and smooth right? I had the Coffee Sensor brand one on my Rocket, and it did that, I got another machine with the ECM one installed and I thought the ECM might be nicer to use/ smoother but it does the same thing. Maybe it's due to the pressure build up when the machine is hot, or maybe some solids or scale affecting the smoothness, not sure.

@Wholelattelovepage 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thanks for the request! I will have more videos coming on using the FCD. In the meantime, It can be used in many ways. You can set and forget for a lower flow rate that works for a particular coffee. Another option is to do a bell curve flow. So start with slow flow and let the coffee pre-infuse. Then ramp up to higher flow for middle of extraction. Then back off to a lower flow as the extraction ends. Marc

You're welcome! Some more advice... take a look at the flow rate without the portafilter in place while you adjust the FCD. This will give you an idea of what's happening with flow rate as you adjust when brewing. Also, remember the flow/pressure can never exceed the general pressure of the machine prior to install of the FCD. Taste, taste, taste! Try some extractions with long low flow at beginning and then ramp up and back down at the end. Compare that flavor to regular extraction at full flow and another at ~1/3 reduced flow rate. Taste and see what produces your favorite flavor! Have some friends taste too and take some votes and notes. It'll be fun to hear the different opinions! Also, don't worry about duration (time) of extraction when reducing flow. 45 seconds is okay if it tastes good. I'd love to hear back on your results! Marc

Hello. I just installed my flow control on mechanika v slim (from wholelattelove). However, the flow increment per 1/4 turn is very sensitive at the end. From Fully close to just a 1mm opening creates 2.5ml/s flow. So a 1/4 turn from fully closed creates a higher flow rate. Too much flow rate. So with just a 1/4 opening, within about 3 secs the pressure jumps to 10 bar (per group head gauge). What am I doing wrong? I followed the instructions when installing my flow control.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hey P, Thanks for the question. Are you sure you are getting no flow when the valve is fully closed? Check by closing the valve fully and then turn the pump on. If still getting flow with the valve fully closed turn out the black handle of the flow control. That allows you to lift off the vertical chrome piece it screws into. What happens is that piece can drop down and prevent the valve from fully closing. If that's the case with yours lift it up a bit to get more clearance between the bottom of the vertical chrome piece and the top of the group. That allows you to turn the valve closed all the way. Keep a bit of space there then tighten the black handle when set to a zero flow position. Marc
@ps121he4
@ps121he4 2 жыл бұрын
@@Wholelattelovepage Thank you for the reply. When the valve is fully closed (clockwise) there is no water flow. But even a 1 mm from that close to open (counter clockwise) it flows. It's way too sensitive and difficult to control the flow. 1/4 open from full close increases the pressure to 9-10 bar within seconds.

However as 2 persons mentionned in the comments, the pictures of the (Profitech FCD) doesn't show a spring while the one in white made by (ECM) includes a spring which nobody seems to tell anywhere, why and if it is necessary or just an optionnal "backup replacement part" cause so far it looks much easier to install than I've thought but if I have to replace a spring somewhere else... x_x
@BensCoffeeRants
@BensCoffeeRants 2 жыл бұрын
The Spring is a stiffer spring that replaces the stock one in the bottom (exhaust) part, somehow it controls the E61 mini-auto pre-infusion, so with the new stiffer spring installed it disables that built in pre infusion so you get total manual control over pre infusion / pressure buildup. My 'Coffee Sensor' Brand flow control mod came with it, I ended up going back to the stock one since I don't mind the quick pre infusion. Others also have mentioned they prefer to use the flow control and keep the original spring. It's not necessary to install. You'll still need to open the top part and replace the mushroom, the easier / less scary (in regards to scratching the machine) is the pressure gauge, which I find very useful, probably the best part of the mod.
@PanzerIV88
@PanzerIV88 2 жыл бұрын
@@BensCoffeeRants Ah that is why then I don't have 100% manual control since I didn't replace the bottom spring which I don't even know if it came with my ECM mod. I really don't find myself using the flow control as looking at the gauge it's like if it's either staying super low for pre-infusion but then as soon as u open it a bit such as half a turn on top, the pressure quickly raise to ~9 Bars, gères like no in between which I find weird so then might as well leave it open at all time for my default 9.5 Bar. If I knew all the trouble and cost it was, I would have just purchased a temperature gauge instead tbh.

As of 4/16/19 our technicians have certified the FCD for use on all E61 group machines manufactured by Profitec, ECM and Expobar. Our technicians continue to test the device on E61 group machines from other manufacturers and we will update the list of certified machines as testing continues. Please be aware as of 4/17/19 we have a limited supply of FCD devices in stock but more are on the way. Limited air shipment arrives about 4/20/19 with a large shipment arriving near the end of April '19. FCD devices may be ordered at this time here: www.wholelattelove.com/produc... Or call 585-924-7170 to pre-order Marc

I think the purchase needs to be updated. You can not purchase from your website. I love the idea and want a device but, I have to look elsewhere.

Hi David, If you originally purchased the machine from us you can purchase the FC from us to upgrade. You would need to call in for that. Here's our contact info: www.wholelattelove.com/pages/contact-us

Heads up. The install and parts for this is now different so the video is inaccurate even with the mention of the badly designed lever on top

Hi FC, Thanks for the comment. Due to supply limitations we are only doing FC devices per-installed. As the video says this install is for V1 FC.

What do you think, why Lelit didnt protect this with a patent?
@aoalr

Flow control has been on expensive machines like LM GS3, Rocket R Nine and more which you can say Lelit “copied” from. Stop shaming when Lelit didn’t patent as leadroc mentioned.

Well, no! This was first done back in the 1960s. More info toward the end of this article on how Michael Hauck/WLL brought back a forgotten feature: dailycoffeenews.com/2019/04/10/whole-latte-love-and-profitec-ecm-launch-flow-control-device-for-e61-groupheads/
