Very helpful, excellent video. My starter is for a 12.5 kw generator, and it is built a little differently than the one you used, but your video gave me the understanding I needed to get my brushes installed. Many thanks!

Thanks old mate, it helped big time. Such a simple thing can be such a pain. I had to tap the wires flatter so they go in & don't spin around & spit it back out while your dealing with the other 3.

I did a engine swap and did not notice where you connect the battery cable that post was hanging out of the starter, still works. I have worked on starters before, this little trick should make life a whole lot less painful.

I did this on a Grasshopper mower starter. If this is the same size, I used a 3/4" pvc pipe. Fit perfectly. You can insert the pipe a little at a time while pushing back each bushing with your finger. The armature just slid in and pushed the pipe out.

Nice video. I had a different approach myself. I put the squares,(forgot the official term), into the slots first, then put the core in next, and then clamped the springs down with my fingers and inserted them into the slot above the squares. Kept the squares from popping out while putting the core into position

I use some of those tiny worthless allen wrenches for holding the brushes, but I didn't know the trick with the socket, thanks for that! Before the allen wrenches I made some with some big paperclips. The hardest part of the repair is removing that little clip, its maddening! I think there's a tool for removing it, I'm seriously considering one.

I don't watch your channel ... until now. I'm trying to get the brushes back on myself on mower starter (one you're working on looks nearly identical to mine) and had the same idea of wire. I just wasn't finding any stiff enough. Didn't know there was such a thing as jeweler's wire. [Also found piano wire an hour later]. Only there's enough headroom on the brushes to allow the wire to slide under the bridge piece of the holder, so I need thicker wire. Or modify. Gives me a solid idea for a product.
@ZippoVarga2 жыл бұрын
You can also use a socket of the appropriate size. I worked for Delco Remy and all of our brush assemblies had a plastic disc holding the brushes in place and you just pressed the brush plate over the Commutator. So there are tools out there for this task. The thing is designing a universal brush holder that would work with all types of starters. Cheers! Zip~
@WiPri03712 жыл бұрын
@@ZippoVarga I worked for a vintage engine parts restoration company rebuilding/restoring 12v motors used on the car, ie. wipers, which are virtually the same as this. We had a simple, extremely easy to use tool for holding brushes back. I've searched for it high and low and everywhere in-between and I cannot find nothing like them anywhere. I do not know if they are used in another industry or not, but it seems likely as obscure as they are. They worked like a charm, were easy to install and remove, and I never ran into a brushes or holders I couldn't use them on. Astounding little things.
@WiPri03712 жыл бұрын
I also modified simple 16 gauge stainless wire and got the brushes seated on the commutator once I figured out how it needed to be formed. Getting to that point took a little time, but reproducing it 3x was easy. Got the job done at any rate. The video though is the most helpful one I found among all that was found.

I used the jeweler's wire but may have nicked the brush surface on a few of the brushes (just small scratches), now there is a squeal every time I start the mower, could that be the cause? I also had to clean and super glue a few of the magnets in as they came loose when I rebuilt my starter, but I'm sure they are holding tight.
@ZippoVarga3 жыл бұрын
The squeal could be a couple things. If the magnets weren't perfectly aligned, one may be rubbing on the Armature or the bushings are out of spec or dry. I don't imagine the brushes would squeak loud enough to be noticeable. Cheers and good luck! Zip~

@ZippoVarga6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you've just got a loose wire on the starter. Should be easy enough to diagnose. Find the starter and the wires attached to it and make sure they are not loose or touching anything but the post they are bolted to. Tighten them up as best you can, but disconnect the battery negative terminal first to avoid sparking issues while tightening them. Don't over tighten them. Just snug them up so the cables and wires don't move. Good luck! If you're not sure, find someone in your friends circle who is confident in what they're doing and ask for their help. Cheers and good luck! Zip~

Unfortunately I didn't see the trick about removing brushes the way ZippoVarga described. I had pulled out the end piece and as a result the brushes were left hanging there!! grrr. II came up with a solution using paper clips. I made four staple shaped "tools" that were just the length of the distance from the back of the brush holder to the front of the brush after I compressed it. Then I slipped a "staple tool" over it and did the same with the next three.The tool left enough space to slip the bushing holder over the commutator. Once pushed in a short distance I removed the clips and pushed the assembly all the way down over the commutator.. Job done!!

Yes, but how to solder new brushes onto plate. Some places sell brushes only without plate
@ZippoVarga3 жыл бұрын
For the best results, you need an OEM brush plate. As for soldering brushes to the wires of an old brush plate, the composition of the brushes won't let solder stick to them. They need to be epoxied in place or spot welded like the originals. Zip~
