How to install the canister purge valve on a 2016 GMC Canyon because the check engine light came on and gave me the code P0496.

Thank you so much. This was the first time that I have ever worked on a car. You saved me so much money as I live in Hawaii. I paid $58.00 at O'reillys and could of bought cheaper online but I did not want to wait. The first thing that I will say is make sure that you check your gas cap because my seal eroded and it was also the cause of the issue for my 2016 Chevy Colorado. I definitely needed to use a flathead screwdriver to separate one of the connections. It is a very tight space. I also had to use a 10mm ratchet with 3 inch extension. Also, ensure that you disconnect the negative terminal for your battery to reset the computer. You do not have to disconnect the positive cable, which will rest your radio and other settings.

This was extremely helpful! Took me +-10 minutes to replace, went and filled up, started immediately without the previous hesitation! CEL has not come back after 20 miles.

Good video, made it easier than if I didn't know some of the tips given here. My issue wasn't a CEL. It was a rapid ticking from the engine that I thought might be engine knock. Fortunately, it was just this part starting to fail. Just the other day I had a rough idle issue and decided to fix it. So, if you have clicking, try replacing the purge valve first. It was easy, but watch this video for details on how to do it.

@littlechihahua the purge valves are known to possibly have issues. I have a 15 Canyon & GM Canada sent me a letter saying they will replace it free of charge or reimburse me if I already had it done.

It’s a GM product they wouldn’t stand behind their warranty on oil consumption when I had my 2012 Terrain! But they just look so dam good I bought another one! I am a glutton for punishment!😂

This literally just happened to my 2016 Canyon. Wish I had seen this video sooner though. :( Oh well, at least now I know where that valve is so next time I can just replace it myself.

Can't you first take out the bolt to easily undue the hose clips?
@thinklikeido9 ай бұрын
Thanks, thats pretty simple. FYI, if a check engine lite is on the remote start won't work on a GM vehicle.

My 2015 Colorado just started doing this as well. CEL comes on and about a 5 second hesitation to start after refueling. Ordered a new purge valve online for $15, will use this video to help replace it. Thanks

Hi, how did you contact GM? I went to the GMC web page. I logged into my.gmc.com. It lists the diagnostic, but there is no information on any known issues. My GMC dealer said it is likely (90% sure) the purge valve. They did not offer to repair ir for free though.

Just picked up the part. I have loud ticking from the purge valve, and stalling issues that have progressively gotten worse. To remove black engine shield/cover before changing out this part: 2015 Colorado: kzfaq.info?search_query=how+to+remove+engine+cover+on+2016+gm+canyon And for 2017 Colorado V6: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gb5-mZRozuDRZqM.html
@fastidiouspa5 жыл бұрын
Dave Marshall you don’t really have to remove it to replace this part I was able to do it really quick without any issues, but if you feel like it would be easier then go ahead if you have the time. Hope this helps.

Perhaps you might consider changing the title of this video posting. Perhaps I am wrong, but the PURGE VALVE, is NOT the CANISTER purge valve. There is no such thing as a canister purge valve. The valve that is related to the CANISTER, is the VENT VALVE, not the PURGE VALVE. The canister contains the charcoal, in order to clean/filter the gasoline rich air, before it exits the vehicle, when the vent valve is in the open position.
