How to Install Ceiling Light Fixtures | New & Replacement Pendant Lighting

Demonstrating the basic installation of ceiling light fixtures, both new where wiring is available (pendant lights above our kitchen peninsula) and replacing an existing light fixture with a 3-light pendant light with cage shades. Note: this how-to video applies only to the United States power grid / voltage.

Thank you. Felt very confident in doing it myself after watching. Actually what I learned from high school physics classes laid a good foundation. All the warnings to avoid lawsuit 😄. I got it. Just like warnings on the food packages.

Great video, TY. The only thing I would suggest is testing the lights work BEFORE you put all the screws back in ceiling plate. If they didn't work, you'd have to unscrew everything again.. p.s. Love your sense of humor. :)

I've installed new light fixtures before and have had no issues with the previous ones. This current one that my wife bought presents a new challenge that I've not had to deal with in the past. The cable is way too long for what I would need. I believe I can just cut the excess off from the top portion to the desired length, but was wondering if you have any videos where you've encountered the same or if you can confirm that's all that needs to be done? Thanks.

You actually don't "have" to connect the ground wire. Its certainly recommended however. Alternatively, you can attach the ground wire to any piece of metal as well.

Just got some kitchen pendants for my new build and noticed when I took the cover plate off that the box isn't flush with the drywall, so my ceiling plate and canopy don't line up at the screws to attach. What do you suggest I do?

Just reaching out... I am approaching a dilemma and I cannot find any info on my next task so I thought I would reach out and see if I can get some feedback. I have and am sound proofing my middle bedroom to be my new home recording studio. The walls are secure with triple insulation including 1-1/2 rigid foam insulation sealed with insulation spray foam. This room is not only dead silent now it is completely air tight...except for my ceiling. The only thing left is the ceiling. My plan is to also apply the 1-1/2 rigid insulation sheets to the ceiling. Once done the entire room will be completely covered in 2-inch acoustic foam panels. Here's my issue. I need to drop my ceiling light fixtures down about four inches. Wiring is not a concern, but I'm not sure how to securely drop & mount the box to remount my lights to clear the double foam. Your thoughts?

@MiguelRobertson Being electrocuted won't always kill you, depending on the current. I'd wager most people who tinker with electronics have been zapped at least a couple of times.

That depends on the fixture. The ones I installed had a compression nut that you could loosen and then reinstall if you had to cut the wire. I'd venture that your light has the same thing.

Hairdryer the cable while applying light downward pressure. Kink sorted. Don't pull too hard!

Sir, how can I do it if its for a rental apartment? Where the lights are just bulbs directly being installed into the ceiling. I don't know if I'm explaining myself properly. Haha sorry

I highly recommend that you don't. You could be liable for the entire complex if something goes wrong. However, the next time you see one of the maintenance personnel ask them if they can change out the fixture for you. It's definitely worth asking the question. Some of them are pretty cool and wouldn't mind doing it. If it's possible it would only take them a few minutes to complete the swap.
