In this part of installing the central heating system we are hanging the first radiator. It's starting to get cold so lets start on installing a central heating system. I hang the first radiator ready for the underfloor pipework and the new worcester combi boiler installation.
Be sure to watch the next videos when I run all the 22mm PEX pipe under the floor and connect them up to the radiators in 15mm copper pipe.

I got my boiler and radiators through Mr Central Heating.

I bought one of the worcester deals but you will need to choose your own and work out your rooms BTU to find out what size radiators, and therefore, boiler you need.

Real life experience of fitting radiators. I've got 6 to fit at my son's house. Valuable advice - check heights of hangers, check for joists.

Good real world DIY video. As you show in Part 2 you can use the nail lines in the floorboards to work out where the joists are. When you position the radiator it is would best to avoid the joists for the flow & return pipework through the floorboards.

Going through very similar set of works at our house, new water main, new central heating etc... You've videos have been very interesting and helpful so far, looking forward to the next instalment! Thank you for sharing your experiences.

We attach radiators with a large number of screws. Because our customers often drink wine and sit down and lean on the radiators and can tear them off drunk

I don't know of anyone over here that would sit on a radiator. Probably for that reason.

May I suggest you fit the valve tails with the rad upside down or on end, to save all the grovelling on the floor 😂😂😂

Oh and it’s very common for the rad tags to be badly positioned ... always check or utilise the slots on at least one bracket to give some adjustment ... and when correct and plumb drill a locking screw in a hole fixing ...after !! ... you live and learn !

You have some discretion and wriggle room on the radiator tags to re position the bracket either side of vertical line if you drill into a void !!

like how you didnt edit out the 'everyday life stuff' Brilliant. Maybe the factory that made those rads was on a 7mm slope!!!! Just make sure your house is not sloping 7mm the other way... youll be 14mm out then ;)

I'm about to buy my first house (or at least put an offer in). It's possible I won't be able to afford one with GCH, but I'm handy enough. This vid is making me think that yeah, it's doable! Even if I have to spend a winter in the cold.. Nice one Lee!

Thanks Ian, good luck with the house offer. I didn't get the boiler installed till late Nov early Dec, I think, so it was pretty cold in the house for a few months. Just used to work during the day to keep warm and then sit in the lounge in the evening with the door shut and an electric heater. I had a thermometer in the kitchen and it was sat on 10 degrees C most of the time so it was hard to get motivated to start work as it was so cold, but it was nice once I got the GCH installed. It's very doable, just plan where you need your pipes to run and it's straight forward from there. I've never done anything like this before until I bought this house, so it was all new to me. But like you, I try to find info on the internet and just do it. Good luck!

Get yourself a pipe pressure tester , test everything you do , the plumber won’t be responsible for any leaks when he connects and commissions the boiler, I installed my central heating last year it was worth the stress, but i used copper pipe , and i hung the boiler on the wall and cut the flue , prv , condensate, holes, and remember your gas must be 22mm. Good luck

There are a lot of plumbers out there that won't commission a boiler if you have hung it yourself. They don't want to have their name on it when it falls off the wall and don't trust a DIY'er. For the sake of £300 they did all the boiler work and run a new 22mm copper pipe to the gas mains. Also the plumber had more leaks than I did ;)

When I mount a radiator, I do not remove the packaging from it, but only cut holes in the packaging for taps and for attaching it to the wall. Because the radiator can be soiled when painting walls, putty

Our rads are drained of any water. You might get a couple of drips out of them but hardly anything really, especially if they have been standing around for a while.

I'd measure the other radiators if they are even heighted even if it means it being higher or lower than intended as long as its level. If they are all off then I'd assume that is how they are made randomly and see if the shop would replace one of the almost not unpacked other ones for one that is level and then correct for the remaining. I'm looking at a replacement of my radiator valves and getting a water softener system put in but I'm letting pro's do it all since the system they have to do and the valves while here isn't that big of a thing.

@LCW DIY What is the name of the material you used to get the correct level when drilling with the bit? Congratulations for the work, I loved your video.

It did me too when you take the time to try and do everything level. The other 6 were all fine, so maybe just bad luck.

I’m having plumbing done to replace our copper pipes with plastic - Is this this wise choice? To give context the rads and pipe work are clogged up with gunk plus we’re having a new boiler installed.

Rad shouldn't be level anyway, should always slant up slightly torwards the bleed nipple so that air can escape....I expect that's why the brackets ate positioned the way they are 😉🙈 xx

Dont buy Kudox. I bought 5 Kudox radiators from Screwfix for a new central heating install in my house 4 years ago; these radiators have a 15 year guarantee. One of the radiators has started rusting from the outside at the bottom rim. I applied to Kudox for a replacement but they just said it was my fault, that I had damaged it on install which is total bs. So the guarantee is worthless. Don't buy Kudox folks.
