In this video I teach how to choose a DC DPS to use in the off grid solar energy system, what is the function of a DPS, I also teach how to install the DPS correctly in the off grid solar energy system, how to assemble the String box with disjunct and DC DPS and how to assemble the DC String box with circuit breaker, fuses and DPS, I will assemble diagrams with DC DPS from Clamper Solar and TAIXI that are specific DPS for low voltage solar energy system!

What is DPS?
Surge protection devices (SPDs) are equipment developed with the aim of detecting transient overvoltages in the electrical network and diverting surge currents. These disturbances are more common than many realize, occurring daily in residential, commercial and industrial environments.
Which DPS to choose to use in solar power system?
The Sizing of the DC SPD will be From the maximum voltage per String of the solar panels connection and the maximum discharge current that the SPD can withstand, Maximum discharge current is measured in thousands of Amperes (KA) and corresponds to the “largest surge” that the DPS can withstand at least once without being damaged. This value is chosen according to the level of exposure of the location to the incidence of lightning, as these are the main causes of electrical surges, Places with high incidence of lightning require SPD with greater capacity.
Urban areas, close to the central region, with buildings equipped with lightning rods in the surroundings: DPS from 12KA to 20KA.
Outskirts of urban areas, with few buildings without lightning rods in the surroundings: DPS from 30KA to 45KA.
Rural areas or remote (isolated) buildings: DPS 60KA or greater.
NOTE: The voltage value of the SPD must be as close as possible to the voltage value of the circuit in which it will be used and for Off Grid Solar Energy Systems it must be a SPD DC or DC for direct current circuit.
General classes and characteristics
Class I: limits voltage surges, in which part of the lightning current is associated, that is, this class is used in the main switchboard, or in environments where direct discharges may occur (urban or rural areas).
Class II: limits voltage surges that penetrate the building, thus, a class II SPD is intended to protect equipment that may be damaged when receiving higher voltages.
Now that we know the classes and understand the waveform, to choose the type of SPD that should be installed in a system, we must know its electrical characteristics:
Rated voltage (Un): the rated voltage is nothing more than the operating voltage of the circuit where the SPD will be installed. It is important to know the nominal voltage at which the SPD will be inserted in order to choose the Maximum Continuous Voltage (Uc), since Un must be less than Uc.
Maximum continuous voltage or Maximum operating voltage (Uc): is a voltage value that is always higher than the rated voltage. Below Uc DPS will not act and Uc is higher than Un.
Protection Voltage Level or Residual Voltage (Up): there is a maximum value of voltage that still remains at the terminals of a SPD during its operation. If a SPD gets an Up 1.2kV, it means that if a voltage surge that generates 20kA of discharge current reaches the SPD, it will limit this voltage to a maximum value of 1.2kV. The lower the Up, the better the DPS quality.
Rated discharge current (In 8/20): value determined by the manufacturer tested under an 8/20us waveform generator that determines the average current that the SPD can withstand without being damaged. For example: if a SPD has an In of 20kA, it can withstand discharge currents greater or less than it is for a number of times determined by the manufacturer (generally 10 to 15 depending on the discharge level).
Maximum discharge current (Imax 8/20): value determined by the manufacturer tested under an 8/20us waveform generator that determines the maximum current that the SPD can discharge at least once without damage. For example: if a DPS has an Imax of 40kA, it can only withstand discharge currents of this nature once.
