Well all I can say is: That was the most precise/perfection I have ever seen in any shed/workshop build I have watched, and to top that, Henry has made this build so that even an amateur could easily carry this out. Henry is the sort of person that is extremely sought after, unfortunately there are not many like him these days. 10/10 all the way for the tuition, video's, workmanship and explanatory professionalism. You would be a well wanted rich man if you lived in Australia, Regards John.

My tuff shed installers need to watch these videos and take a test before they install another shed on someone else's property. Contractors just do whatever they want to do and homeowners are supposed to be ok with it. Show up whenever leave whenever not tell you a thing or the office of tuff shed their contracted through. Mother and daughter purchased a tuff shed got told nothing about the progress of shed installation almost a week with premier pro tall barn 10x14 not completed. Had family over to check it out now we have a list of mistakes like huge mistakes that need to be addressed. Funny bc I want to scream about the only communication we've received from anyone about our shed was an email to sign something and pay our final payment which is only 900.00 of the almost 12grand we've already paid. I've watched your videos and they've been a huge help to me as we plan to fix some major issues with an add-on that was already here when we bought our house. We're adding Smartside panel to the addition and I'm debating between skirting options. If the add on is resting on the concrete patio drip cap the better way to go? Can we rest that drip cap on the concrete? I see that we need to keep the Smartside 6" above the ground level and I can't figure out the best way to do that. Thanks so much for your help, your videos are so informative!

This is the best how to series I have ever seen. I have done many projected based on how to videos but there is always something forgotten or left out. You guys did a great job. On a side note, if I were to build a 16 x 16 building using these plans could I use the same method making the trusses? Thanks!
@Countrylifeprojects
@Countrylifeprojects 10 жыл бұрын
Hi David... I personally feel for small sheds with a span of 6' through 10', homemade trusses are great. But when getting into spans of 16' I think buying engineered trusses built for the climate (snow loads etc) in your area would be the best option. Typically trusses up to a span of 20' are fairly inexpensive. I would get some prices - you may be surprised how affordable they can be and you will have the piece of mind knowing they will be safe and strong.

You can use the methods shown for a 10 x 12 shed, however, my plans and videos are for an 8 x 10 shed. I would use 1/2" plywood for the truss gussets for a 10' span. You will have to change up all the measurements to suit the larger size.

If the peak miter isn't perfect, just add a medallion made out of some scrap siding. I usually make a five sided medallion and paint it the same color as the field for decorative contrast. Looks great and you can be a little sloppy with that pesky peak miter joint!

Hi, top-shelf video series, thanks for posting. I had a question about flashing in the back of top gable siding pieces ad the bottom siding. I realize that the butt-joint between the siding panels has some protection from the overhang, but I have viewed other smart siding installation videos that use such flashing. Did you caulk on top of the horizontal exterior trim as you did the door's drip cap? Thanks again.
@Countrylifeprojects
@Countrylifeprojects 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Horatio... In most cases, using a Z-flashing is the best option, especially on wider sheds or larger structures where rain is likely to hit the wall at this joint. For these sheds I opted for the 1x4 trim with a slight angle on the top edge as it is very close to the gable peak and with the soffit overhang not a lot of rainfall will actually hit this part of the wall. If you live in a area with heavy rainfalls, Z-flashing is the better option. If in dryer areas, not as much of a concern. And yes, we did caulk behind the 1x4 and on the top edge - making sure to fill the groove on the panels as well.

With glue between trim and siding, if you ever have to replace the trim, how would you get it off without damaging the siding beneath the trim?
@Countrylifeprojects
@Countrylifeprojects 2 жыл бұрын
Well, I don't build to take things apart, I build for things to stay tight and in place :-) It is more likely the OSB panels will rot and need replacing before the trim. Gluing everything, even though it is more work, ensures joints and flat surfaces remain tight and minimize potential for water to get in behind trim and on the panels etc.

Ive watched this whole series. Very useful. My question is if you dont use z flashing between sheets on the gable and just do trim dont you run the risk of water behind the trim board sneaking through the seam? i know you have an overhang but rain does not just fall straight down. Very curious of your opinion. Thanks
@Countrylifeprojects
@Countrylifeprojects 5 ай бұрын
It is a valid point. We didn't use it do to our location and with the over hang we did not feel too much rainfall would hit the wall at this height - and that caulking properly would be adequate (we also tapered the top of the 1x4 covering the joint to shed water). That said. In most cases, where you have an exposed joint like this, then yes, highly recommended if not a most do! Thanks for asking!
@urloony
@urloony Жыл бұрын
Shouldn't flashing be installed over the trim? Is this omitted due to being just a shed?
@Countrylifeprojects
@Countrylifeprojects Жыл бұрын
It is omitted mainly because of the use of LP Smart Panels with no sheathing as would normally be used in house construction (so yes, because it is a shed with single exterior panels). In regular construction you would sheath the building, install a wrap, windows, doors etc. Then trim, then flashings and finally the exterior wall finish. The way the shed was built to minimize material usage, it is almost impossible to do things that way, especially with the detail on the top door trim. Hence the use of the roof soffit/gable overhang and caulking the top of the trim on the door. In regards to Z-flashing on the two panels (horizontal trim) gable ends, we opted to do it without since there will not be a substantial amount of rain hitting that part of the shed with the soffit/gable overhang. That 1x4 trim also has a beveled edge on top edge to prevent water from sitting on the top edge (and it was caulked under the trim and on the top edge afterwards).

Is there any particular reason you didn't 45 the vertical corner trim like you did on the base skirt trim? Just wondering why the butt joints on the vertical corner trim. I realize it wouldn't be as easy on trim of those lengths. Excellent videos and shed. I hope to use the same for a 10x 12. Thanks.
@Countrylifeprojects
@Countrylifeprojects 8 жыл бұрын
+Jeff Williams Good question... You can 45 the corners however, I have found that this type of joint opens up over time and is unsightly and needs to be caulked when it does. In addition, lumber is not what it used to be so it is even more likely to be an issue in this regard. Also, and the main reason I used this method, is ease of construction for viewers who may not have the tools to do this... or may not be comfortable make long 45 degree cuts accurately (and they have to be even and accurate for the joint to be tight). That said, if you do use 45 angles on the corners, I would cross nail the joint (like I did on the fascia board corners) and use a glue or good caulking with adhesive properties along the entire vertical joint.

Did you caulk around all sides of the trim boards? Or just the 1/8 inch seam of corner trim?
@Countrylifeprojects
@Countrylifeprojects 8 ай бұрын
Not on the vertical pieces as long as they are tight to the panels. Horizontal pieces the top side should be (only those that may be exposed to rain or snow). It is why all the trim was pre-painted so you don't have to cut in after - makes for a much nicer paint job when done.

If you use a 2x6 skirt for the drip cap should you stick to that size for the rest of the trim or is ok to use something else like the 1x4's?
@Countrylifeprojects
@Countrylifeprojects 10 жыл бұрын
DominionofGod Hi, It is very common to use a heavier skirt like 2x6, 2x8 or even 2x10 (on a house). Using thinner material like 1x4 for the remaining trim is okay - in fact it is very common to do so.

@Countrylifeprojects
@Countrylifeprojects 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Scott... sorry for the delay it has been so busy. It has been awhile but I am sure I used a 1 quart paint can for the shape, then rough cut by jig saw and finished with a belt sander. Lots of time when a radius is required near an edge like this, if the right size, various paint can sizes work great.

Do you use z flashing between horizontal panels or just the 1x4 trim?
@Countrylifeprojects
@Countrylifeprojects 8 жыл бұрын
+jmagda41 On the shed we just used the 1x4 since the joint is covered fairly well by the soffit overhang and we caulked along the top. However, if I was building a garage or house and using these panels I would use the Z flashing - or any application where rain would hit the walls on a regular basis.

So for trimming it doesn't have to be pressure treated as long as you seal it or prime/paint it?
@Countrylifeprojects
@Countrylifeprojects 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jasper... no it doesn't, but it also depends on the trim you use. We used cedar which is highly resistant to rot. There is also PVC available. Any wood trim should be primed and paint (and primed on all sides is best - and ends after cutting to size if those cuts will be exposed to rain/snow). And then there is OSB trim which I do not like to use anywhere near the ground or areas that may remain wet or damp on a regular basis. If you use OSB trim, use a minimum of 2 coats of paint prior to install (one coat if it comes pre-primed and painted).

What about the bottom? It looks nice with that white board at the bottom, but during the rainy day water will slide down the wall under that white board and there it will need much more time to dry, so quite shortly the bottom should start to rot?

how do you cut an angle greater than 50 degree? My mitre saw only goes as far as 50?
@Countrylifeprojects
@Countrylifeprojects 6 жыл бұрын
In this case, you would need to mark the angle on the lumber and cut with a circular saw. Or make a jig so you can cut multiple cuts all the same (with a circular saw). Many of the newer Dewalt Miter saws have the 60 degree angle capacity and it is very handy.

@Countrylifeprojects
@Countrylifeprojects 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex, In hindsight, I guess it would have been good to show the nailing of the first few nails. Basically the top is held in place by the soffit and you only need a nail on the lower part of the 1x4. Just nail in the nail on an angle - the less the better but use an angle that still allows you to hammer fairly easy without damaging the soffit boards. You could use finishing screws (small head), but typically I have not seen these coated or in a finish ideal for use outside (that said, if humidity is not an issue, these boards will never see any rain or snow).

@@Countrylifeprojects Thanks Steven. I did (I think) what you mention but since I used vinyl trim and 2-in screws (small heads, yes), I think it was easier because the drill bit is longer and definitely, "screwing" on an upwards angle was life saver with the added benefit that it helped to slightly pull a board up when the screw tightens. You could not foresee all the lil issues and hints but I must say, it came real close. This video series is one of the greatest I'd say. I watched them all a few years ago because they are so good, and I watched them again now that I actually had to build a smaller shed for my daughter. Thanks for all that.

Why no compressor and nail gun???
@Countrylifeprojects
@Countrylifeprojects 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen... Normally when building I would use a nail gun setup. However only a small number of DIY'ers have a compressor and the various nailers that would be needed, so we opted for hand nailing and using screw guns etc. This way, any viewer with a basic set of tools can follow the videos without spending a bundle on new tools. Most DIY'ers have these basic tools including a drill and screw gun so it made sense to us to not use air nailers.

I don't understand... all that attention to "drip cap" but no flashing? Water is going to stream right through the grooves and has a direct path to the interior... the caulk will not hold over time.

Hi Cool... with the overhang very little rainfall should hit the area above the trim. Caulked properly it should not be an issue. However, if you are concerned, a Z-channel flashing instead of trim is a good option - and a must if rainfall were to flow down a wall like this.

@@Countrylifeprojects I'm not concerned, it's not my shed :-) I just thought it was interesting that was left out of an instructional vid... it is just a shed though - thanks for sharing!

Love the CAPS... it is not about a SHED, the videos are meant to provide sound carpentry techniques that can be used for ANY type of project, home or even high end luxury home as you noted. Cheers

@@Countrylifeprojects BOTTOM LINE IS ! MOST of US GUYS JUST WANNA BUILD an AVERAGE SHED to STORE SOME TOOLS IN. WERE NOT LIVING, SLEEPING , OR EATING IN the SHED. YOU GO IN, YOU GO OUT . WE NEED 4 WALLS a FLOOR, ROOF, and a DOOR.
