the bottom corners wouldnt be sealed if/when water got behind the window and could find its way onto the sill

There are more modern stretch tapes, e.g. Tyvek FlexWrap, available now that can be placed into the corner of the sill and stretched so that they cover the front face of the wall without having any hole at the corner that would allow moisture in. Using a six inch long piece of a modern stretch tape in the corners to seal the house wrap would be a significant improvement. I've seen builders use such tape for the whole sill and the whole header, but really you just need 3 inches along and 3 inches up the corners and you can use a cheaper tape for the rest of the window.

great video but window height plus 2 times with of tape ? is that just a mistake ?
@IPGtape
@IPGtape 8 жыл бұрын
+Chris Mendola Thanks for the question. "2x the width of the tape" is correct. So it would be window length plus 12 inches (6 inches extra on each side). The presenter pauses between "two" and "times" so it sounds a bit confusing, but what he's saying is correct.

+Intertape Polymer Group The voiceover is read that way three times, as if it were (width + 2) x tape width. Also, he needs to distinguish the pronunciations of "sill" and "seal" better. At 2:30, the text reads and is read aloud "OBS." Should be, and is later, "OSB." I like the demo for the bottom of the window... very efficient opposed to other techniques.

@@TomKaren94 Ben Blake is correct on the method demonstrated here. This will definately LEAK! Chris Mendola - ..."very efficient" "technique" in guiding water into the sill area and getting the customer to buy twice as much product to do the job! The method demonstrated here is 50 years old technology. The installer did not even try to close that hole with caulk or sealant! What a Dweeb...! No one should EVER CUT in the corners! The thumbnail is wrong, the old ways were wrong. Air can get under the Tyvek and into the home. If air can, so can water. Don’t follow these directions. Minimize penetrations, by limiting staples to hang Tyvek. Watch more current videos on sealing windows and doors.

you do not seal the bottom of the window with window flash tape. There has to be flow back for filtration of moister or water if water was trapped in window it has to go some where. It not good to trap water moister and let it mold stuff.

Are you just repeating someone said or did you actually saw it yourself? so if water is trapped in window, this means that there are little holes on the exact bottom of the window where it can drain out? BS ... explain to me please HOW water should get in there. is there any video?

I always find funny when people argu with the company video...first, unless you get your window at the salvation army they wont leak... and second, if your house is properly build you wont have that problem to begin with... also... yhea its overkill dude its a company video!!! someone should stuck a potatoes in your muffler... make you realize that you know very little and should shut up lol

Even if flashing keeps outside moisture from penetrating, condensation can build up inside around edges of windows in very cold climates and run inside trim and into rough opening. That moisture, but f it occurs, should have a path to drain away to outside. That's why any caulk on bottom nailing flange is a discontinuous bead AND why you don't want to tape over bottom flange.

@rexjansen7717 2 жыл бұрын
Not an absolute , in the steel trades it's very common in shops to use decimals, and Evan Metric depending on where your shop drawings Where generated , rule of thumb you work in the system that your drawings represent , this is to remove the possibilities of mistakes in communication and possible errors in conversion , construction is not the only trade Out there

Goal is to catch drain dry. Where’s the slope, no decay shims, backdam and please don’t insulate the sill pan zone.

Slope? Decay shims? Backdam? What's that?
@tlangdon12
@tlangdon12 Жыл бұрын
@@davidtalavera2462 A slope is exactly that, a slope - it is usually built into the sill so that any moisture that gets under the window frame drains to the outside of the house (the slope runs from the inside to the outside across the whole width of the window sill. This is why the installer the video didn't apply any flashing over the window flange at the bottom of the window, so that any such moisture could come out, but with no slope there is nothing to encourage this. A backdam is a vertical section on the window sill (so that the above mentioned slope ends in a vertical wall) that water will find it even harder to climb up. (It's like a dam wall). I've no idea what decay shims are.

Never fold your housewrap to the inside. Any air infiltration now has a clear pathway to the interior wall. Never tape over the flange onto the housewrap, any water that makes its way behind the housewrap now has a clear pathway into the interior of the wall assembly. It's amazing that you think this is proper practice, what a shame! If you were to do this correctly, you would tape your flange to the plywood, then fold your housewrap back on the flange and tape it using seam tape. Your method provides zero air sealing properties and is down right irresponsible.

Wow, finally some one said it. I completely agree. It's better to have the window sealed right again the plywood or studs, on the sides and top, that is. On the bottom it should be on top of the house wrap, I hear many people say leave the bottom uncaulked in case water get in there it has a way to come out. Why would water get in there behind the window if you sealed it against the framing and then you install the wrap over the flange and tape or caulk the wrap to the flange, there should be no way for water to get behind the window.
