Jeff, your advice (I think it's in one of the other videos), on painting your baseboard, or door trim, etc, BEFORE you install it has saved me so much time. I just finished paint & trim on my child's bedroom. I pre-painted the door trim and baseboards in the garage (and the little 4 yr old got to help, that was great!). After I installed them, touching up the holes, and a few smudges, took a few minutes. Currently, I'm repainting existing trim in the hallway and I can't stand it. I'm on my knees for a long time, and I hate it! People, LISTEN TO JEFF'S ADVICE!!! Thank for all you're doing. I appreciate you, and the channel!

When I did my baseboards, I just cut inch lengths from a PVC board that was shorter than my baseboards and placed them in the corners. I didn’t have to cut any angles. Everything just fit perfectly once the boards were properly measured and cut. They look great and very stylish after being painted and caulked.

Thank you for the professional video, I have three general question topics: 1) Finish nails or brad nails for this oversize wood trim? How do you then mask the nail after install? 2) Can you install vinyl plank first then the trim to avoid using quarter round? If so, what kind of space do I need between the flooring and the bottom of the trim? 3) Do I have to be weary of what lurks behind the drywall? I'd avoid being directly under electrical switches and outlets, but what about plumbing, etc?

Pump up the base! I always like to mitre as well. You get a good surface area to glue. I used to shim at inside corners or fire a couple nails behind to keep it from diving in and leaving a gap. I now prefer to put my fingers behind base a couple feet from the corner and pull base out a couple inches. I then put a nail close to the corner into the bottom plate. When I push the base back against the wall the nail acts as a fulcrum point and closes the joint. Another great vid dude! Thanks!

A tip I learned years ago, and which I practice to this day is: prime all sides of your trim. The intent is to reduce the risk or degree of shrinkage (contraction-expansion) and therefore separation at corners and other joints. Seems to make a difference. Another tip that also seems to work well is to use biscuits in joining outside corners -- this is a more aggressive way of the gluing exercise you show. (And glue always goes on both surfaces.) This is good on outside corners of baseboards, and on corners of casements. Adds very little time, helps keep all surfaces flush, and yields a strong, long-lasting bond. Third, if you will be putting in quarter-round as well as baseboard, then locate your lower brads if possible in the area of the baseboard that will be covered by the quarter-round. This makes for less hole-filling and paint touch-ups later. I believe all came from Fine Homebuilding articles over the years..

Thanks, Jeff. I've watched dozens of your videos over the past few weeks, including your comprehensive series on drywalling (excellent). They are consistently first rate. I find myself watching the gamut: similar projects to ones I plan to do, ones I've done in the past, even those I'm not likely to ever entertain! No matter what I have already done or know, you continually illuminate with new tips, techniques, insights -- and tools. (Your line on one: "Why rent a tool, when you can purchase it?" resonated!) As has been expressed by many before me, I really appreciate the time and effort you put into these, the commitment you show. It is a great service. Looking forward to whatever you post in the future. Thank-you.

While not a wood worker myself, I'm a big fan of the coped joint. Nothing is straight, I can tell you as a professional painter that fixing a 1/4 gap on a inside miter is very difficult. While you took the time to line up your miters, most "professionals" in my area don't. I wish coping was more common place.

Grinder?! You can't be serious, bud. Just get a coping saw. That's what it was made for. Do this: cut the piece to the length you want (square ends), then 45 (as and inside corner) the end you want to cope. Get your coping saw and cut all the exposed material (if you trim is primed, that would be all the raw wood/mdf) on a slight angle. Boom. Done. No grinder. No sanding. No noise and, most importantly: perfect joint. 👊🏼

Just one more tip: I use spring clamps when bradding all outside corners of baseboards and casement. These help align the surfaces while applying the brads. In effect, they act like that "third hand" Jeff is often mentioning. The pliers and 4 spring clamps cost $38.50 (CDN) at Lee Valley. A sound investment.

Should I use a finish nailer or brad nailer for baseboards, and also what gauge nails. Thanks.

Hi, it looked like glue instead of nailing trim was done in a different video. Do you have a preference? Thank you

Jeff, why have I noticed a few videos where you either have a fresh black eye or are recovering? Just curious. Love your videos bro, better than TOH if you ask me! :)

Love the videos, I did my bathroom using your drywall video. My next step is to do baseboards, your video came just in time.

If you take the corner angles and cut accordingly to that degree you do not have to use shims and loads of caulk. In the corners especially you will see wider caulking from the top.

You always have the gap from the taping process. That is what I am shimming.

It would be great if a KZfaq video covered the shimming behind the base to get it vertical as the sheetrock is not always good to the floor.

what size finish nailer do you use for 3/4" thick wood baseboard?

Not the method I used. I did a 440 meter building ( that is 1600 meters of skirting ) at my home using the method where I cut the straight edge of the skirting at an inward angle with the power saw, and then simply used the coping saw to cut around the edge of the curved top corner. Very simple, very clean.
