Glad you demonstrated the red head in the proper position on the 90 where you can see it through the inspection slot. We don't have to (I still do) use them in my state on MC, but I had to open, re-adjust and show the inspector each one while running AC because I had them to far forward. Great video. I'll have to get a set of those Kleins because the although I love the rotosplit, its way to bulky and you end up bending the handles. Thanks.

Used at least 4 brands of type AC ( BX ) or MC cable jacket strippers. Found Roto Flex to be the best. I always use the red anti short bushings. After stripping jacket always cut the edge at a 45 degree angle to protect conductor jacket.

When I wired my house I used AC or armored cable. It didn't have a green ground wire but instead relied on the armor itself as the return path. An aluminum bond wire runs through it to maintain continuity through the spirals. With this I stripped off the armor, put the red hat on as you did and bend the aluminum bond wire over the red had as you did with the plastic and wound it around the spirals. The connectors I used were small, had the locknut and just a screw to hold the it to the armor. I was told some electricians used to wind the aluminum bond wire around the setscrew.

Crappiest ground wire ever made. Was told at IAEI continuing education classes several times that this maybe #18 guage bare aluminum wire is in constant contact with the armored jacket. Was always told to never have dissimilar metals touch one another because of galavant reaction yet this aluminum fragile ground is in contact with steel jacket. Best practice is to use only MC cable with a full sized insulated green ground conductor.

Anti-short bushings are not required for Type MC cable in accordance with the listing for the product. The termination fittings approved for use with Type MC cables are designed such that the wires will not come in contact with the cut edge of the armor; the throat of the fitting is small enough to prevent contact with the armor. Type MC termination fittings perform the same function for Type MC cable as Type AC terminations plus the anti-short bushing do for Type AC cable. Direct quote from the NEC panel… other guy was right but didn’t know why

I don’t hate those push in connectors, until you have to take them out of the box. The first time I used one I brute forced the wire out of the wire end. I learned pretty quickly learned to unscrew the wire and it worked. I’ve also had to remove the fitting from the box side by pressing the retaining tabs in with a screwdriver. It was a bit of a waste of time but it worked, instead of pulling the ring clamp off it. Also I prefer the roto splits just because they’re cool to use lol.

Great video. One thing that makes you above others is your command of the language. Point: the connector you held up first saying don't use. There is another connector that looks almost exactly like it, but has a small, hard to see bump on it for grabbing the spiral and has the restriction on the end so the cladding cannot enter the box. It is labeled for MC. I have an unopened package and an opened one. I used some of those on my project years ago, but also have the squeeze type. I regret ever purchasing the "almost" NM /romex ones. They have another version two that is two circles closing together which would seem to be better, but the ones you show look even better for gripping the spirals.

Very helpful video, thanks. BTW, I have had nothing but bad luck with the "snap2it" connectors--very difficult or impossible to force the MC cable into the connector, destroys the anti-short bushing in the process, and tears up the conductor insulation when you are unsuccessful and have to pull the cable back out. At almost $2 each, they also seem overpriced.

No to your question of using electrical tape in place anti-shorts "redheads". I always placed the open edge of the anti-short opposite from the cut edge of the MC. The point on the Anti-short protrudes past the face of the connector. The inspector can look for that to check for use of anti-short.

When you have the time, could you expand on mc cable? When was it first introduced, the reason behind it, where it can or easier to say, where it can't be used?

great video. only issue is the plastic sheath. i don't think you're supposed to pull it back, the sheath provides extremely little tension support. you want the MC connector to touch the metal sheathing to bond it to ground.

How can you tell what size fittings to get? The roll of 14/2 doesn’t have a diameter or trade size listed. I figured 3/8 clamp connectors and either 5/16 or 3/8 anti shorts but nowhere on the product does it tell you usually.

Great video. What about the MC connectors that have an odd opening at the end where even if you have the red-head installed - it looks to me like you still could short out the wire after the red-head and the end of the FMC connector. These types are mostly what they sell at HD and Lowes. I never felt like it was a good idea to use them - they are MC rated through. I like the pieces where their is a (red) insulation ring around the opening.

Installing some MC cabling in the house this weekend and your video answered the questions I had about the process. Thank you for the excellent content man. PS your first tip when messing with metal electrical boxes and MC cable should be always uses gloves. I just learned this the hard way. I thought I was being careful but later that night my hands started throbbing from all the micro cuts I got just from handling the metal boxes bare handed lol.

I need to connect MC cable (12/2) to 1/2" EMT conduit. Do you have a video on how to do that without using a box as a connection point? I would like to go directly between the two using just one connector. Could you also give a part number or purchase place for it? Thank you.

Now that's a good idea for a video. All you need to do is put a emt connector and a rigid coupling. And use a tite bite mc connector or one with threads.

I believe that If you use the outdoor rated mc cable which will have a pvc jacket on it then you can use it outdoors. That's all that I am aware of

Is it best to pull the mc from the middle of the roll or the outside of the roll??? which get's you in proper position to pull thru metal studs without catching.

So with that, I'd say see which way the mc is naturally going it will slide through so much better one way than the other. Just depends on how it's wound
