MY STORY:
In 2016 I had been in law enforcement for 7 years.
I was not in control of my schedule, I was hardly making any money, and I was away from my family working nights and holidays. I was capable of more, and I was silently suffering. I knew I was selling myself and my family short.
I started Florida Turf Pros as a side hustle in 2016 before going full time in 2017.
My lawn business changed my life.
I control my own schedule, control my own income, and I am proud of what I have built; a business that supports me, my family, and some employees.
If you are a lawn care business owner, this channel will be a valuable resource for you.
This really is a great industry to be in, and I hope that by documenting my journey it will help you.

Before you ask... the weeds were sprayed by the homeowner PRIOR to us installing the mulch here 😂 Make sure to check licensing in your area before spraying ANY chemicals.

When I do mulch jobs, I usually clean the prior terrain. Metal tine will pull those weeds easily. I don’t feel good throwing down mulch on weeds, grass and just piling it all up. 😅

That pricing sounds great we charge $135 up here in east Tennessee. I like that you said charge more for the first yard, we need to start doing that as well.

Yep....I tried doing it for 125 a yard and your right. I stopped doing them because it takes time to go get it, and load it. If you have the ability, a flatbed truck would be VERY beneficial if your doing a lot of these. I would cut down tremendously on the time because load time eats profits. IF I was doing it again, id agree that the first yard shouldn't be under 200 dollars. with that said...the prooperty you just did was a PERFECT/ideal job. You were able to get trailer close to unload site, every thing was prepped and ready by the customer. If you charged over 200 for that one, its a money maker and not just a "grind"

Great minds think alike 😆 That's the same way I've been handling mulch installs for a number of years now especially if they have preexisting weeds in the beds. It's so much easier to treat the area first instead of hand pulling and Preen really works wonders and adds to the fine details of a job that can be explained to a client. Preen has been my go to for rock pavers and pea gravel. Good words on the money side as well.

If you have room on your trailer, bring a mower and put the bags on the mower where you put your feet. I can normally load about 4 or 5 bags on the zero turn. Works well if it's a big job.

Thanks for the info! We have found it is cheaper and faster for us to buy bulk loose mulch, $21 yd in Mid-Atlantic east coast, transport in dump trailer and spread it by using the large loose material scoops. We "sling" it one scoop at a time from the trailer, but by slinging from the scoop, we don't have to dump it then spread it, as the sling gives good spread and coverage. Really saves time and gives good cardio! Obviously if you can be within a 100 ft of the beds. Bag mulch has never been a good quality in our experience! Two of us lay 5yds in about 45 mins at the average 10k lot.

In my area in Michigan I can purchase much better quality shredded hardwood mulch in bulk so I don’t do the bagged stuff. I just don’t like the colored wood chipped stuff. The bagged stuff does have its advantages if you like the product. I did one job for a customer that started with bagged mulch and gave up so I bought more of the bagged to finish it. It must have been old stock as it was wet and moldy from being stored improperly. Last time I used bagged.

Do you need licensure to use preen or round up for weeds in the beds?

This is of course just my opinion but anytime I see businesses use bagged mulch, it makes me think of "weekend warriors" or just unprofessional. I dont think there can be many arguments the quality in bagged mulch is worse quality but also more expensive. One could say, oh we charge it to the customer but then that is a bad business mindset as you can charge the same, use less labor to get it out (IMO) to the beds and bulk price compared to bagged mulch is a big difference in our area. Side note: i understand the customer in this video sprayed for weeds but at least take 5 minutes to get up the bulk of the weeds. We all know they aren't all dead and tossing a few inches over will not always suffocate and naturally deteriorate. This is not a bash against this video or business but just another owners personal opinion.

People around this area are cheap. They want pinestraw installed for $6.50 per bale when it costs $4 per bale. They don't want to pay landfill fees nor the time to go to the landfill. They complain about paying $150 a month for bi-weekly cuts on 3/4 acres that has gates that don't work and junk everywhere that has to be picked up. They won't pay $85 for a cutting when they constantly complain about the job the person that charges $80. One person pays $85 for almost 2 acres. I am glad I am retired and can be selective and don't depend on cutting yards or landscaping for a living in this area. If I am not earning at least $1 per man minute, then I have other things that I would rather be doing. Always helps to ask about how much they are expect to spend on the project because it helps eliminate giving estimates to people that don't want to pay adequately.
