You know Scott what I like about this the most about you doing the pipe repair is the fact that it teaches anybody that's coming into the industry how important it is for stuff like this to stay maintained to keep the pump running and to keep your job

Absolutely!!!! At many smaller companies the operators are in charge of checking/maintaining their pipes/elbows/gaskets. It’s invaluable information for us operators to know. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Pipe checking has got to be my least favourite part of operating a pump. So many finnicky details to it. Thanks for the informative video
@canadianconcretepumper19793 ай бұрын
I will say that’s one distinct advantage of single-wall pipe, it can be checked quickly and easily using an ultrasonic tester (which will not properly measure twin-wall pipe).

Been changing boom pipe and elbows for 45 years. Thompsons Titans Schwing and now Alliances. One thing I've found is I think Schwings might have more common elbows. When looking at Alliances I've noticed some tighter shorter radiused elbows that wear quicker and you have to keep a eye on them. Schwing pipe wears differently on certain booms too especially on some of the cross over pipes like on the 39 meter. I think our best time on a 61 meter was 6 hours with about 8 guys. Have fun.

Man, if that's all the wear you have after that many yards you must be pumping apple sauce🤣 Down here in NC that would be like Swiss cheese by then. Turning pipes is quick and easy if you are motivated. Problem these days is mostly button pushers very few with any skills. Im sure Putz will find a way to put wear sensors in soon so no one has to open a clamp anymore😆 Don't worry I've changed a pipe or two, no keyboard warrior here.✌
@canadianconcretepumper19793 ай бұрын
It’s crazy right? People generally don’t believe the yardage we get up here until they see it first hand. Definitely a fan of spinning/rotating pipes if I’m an owner/operator and/or have an operator whom is competent to do so. As you mentioned though, it’s getting tougher and tougher these days to find operators whom are willing, or even efficient to do it. Most guys just want to pump the concrete and hang the keys up on the board at days. As Mike had mentioned in the video, when calculating out what it can actually cost to have operators in the yard spinning pipe, the small-ish amount of added life from the pipe doesn’t always justify the labour cost.
@garlenseong383 ай бұрын
I definitely thought the major wear would be the elbows, and 45/90 pipes...
@canadianconcretepumper19793 ай бұрын
Same as me. This twin-wall stuff doesn’t seem to be quite as predictable as the old-school hardened single-wall pipe and cast manganese elbows was/is.

Have you ever seen the little spacer on the Conforms diversion valve it keeps the grout out so you can grease it. Thompsons used them on their swivels.

I know right? There’s a couple pieces in there which would have caused us issue sooner rather than later, but much of it was still in good shape. I’m just not a fan of mix ‘N matching new/old stuff on our busier fleet equipment (this thing is out every day). It’s easier just to bite the bullet after 7+ years of use and swap it out while we have it in the shop. Definitely sucks though, some of that pipe probably still had another 20,000 cubic yards left in it.

If the conform pipe is heavier, im assuming it will decrease the weight rating of your tip section?
@canadianconcretepumper19793 ай бұрын
So standard weight boom pipe is 29.5 pounds per foot (filled with concrete). There are a good amount of booms which are not rated for standard weight pipe and require a “weight restricted” classification of boom pipe to be used (typically around 28 pounds per foot, filled with concrete). This is absolutely something that needs to be discussed with your manufacturer for definitive answers. And yes, we actually did have a boom that was rated for 280 pounds tip-weight with lightweight boom pump, and the manufacturer had advised us that using standard weight pipe would reduce the tip-weight rating to 210 pounds. I cannot emphasize enough here, talk to your manufacture and get something in writing.

Conforms “Endurance” series twin-wall pipe is what we installed here today.
@user-vn6hi2bi3g3 ай бұрын
Why not use ultra sonic surface testors for wall thickness and eliminate the need for disassembly to check wall thickness? Fast easy and produces a history for each test site establishing when to remove for actual mechanical testing of any section below your min. specs. and allows for testing anywhere not limited to the ends of pipe sections. Costs would be a fraction of using thickness micrometer. Ray Stormont PS these testors can detect layer thickness of different substrates i.e. paint steell concrete residue etc.
@canadianconcretepumper19793 ай бұрын
Ultrasonic thickness testers will not work with-wall pipe. Typically, when measuring from the outside of the pipe, they will measure only the mild steel outer shell of the pipe but not the hardened inner lining.

What was that you were spraying on the outside of that gasket like a silicone to keep it from drying out and cracking and rotting
@canadianconcretepumper19793 ай бұрын
Light film of lubricant (WD40 and/or silicone line works great) just to make closing up the clamps a little easier.
@danieln27073 ай бұрын
We normally put the red grease on the outside of the seal and give the inside of the clamps a little bit of grease too
@canadianconcretepumper19793 ай бұрын
@@danieln2707 I’m not a fan of greasing the outside of the gasket as I find that it’s sticky/messy and can sometimes actually make the clamps for difficult to close up (especially when a guy drops the rubber in the dirt) 😂😂😂 Just my personal preference to use a light film of spray-lube mostly.

@dummerdum47143 ай бұрын
do they use thinner pipe on the straight section to save weight?
@canadianconcretepumper19793 ай бұрын
Some booms specify as “weight restricted” and use a thinner wall, or smaller diameter pipeline to reduce weight.

I use a 3ft 5 to 3 steel reducer on my tip. You must know of it, 6 ft if reducer is your preference?
@canadianconcretepumper19793 ай бұрын
So we prefer a separate 5-4 followed by a 4-3. Reason being, when we’re running a 3” tip-hose we just simply remove the 4-3 and connect up the 4”. I
@dannpriebe3 ай бұрын
Also, with a 5 to 4 and a 4 to 3, if it plugs you can often get away with get away with just taking off a 3ft 4 to 3 instead of a 6 ft 5 to 3.

I also had another question for you you know you guys replaced all of the boom pipe but what about the pipe that goes from the hopper to the deck itself does that ever wear out or is it just always the boom pipes that always wear out only and that's it
@mitchelldake72033 ай бұрын
The swing out, elbows and reducer definitely wear out! They have their own specs as well
@canadianconcretepumper19793 ай бұрын
So I actually have a video from a few weeks prior in which we had the turret and deck-pipe apart on this same machine. We replaced the turret, elbows, and gaskets. The pipe was still in great shape. The deck pipe we need to address a few pieces within the next 6-12 months here.
The pipes which came off were factory installed from Putzmeister. The boom kit which we installed was ConForms purchased through, and painted at Alliance. To the best of my knowledge, both Alliance as well as Putzmiester use sprayed on epoxy paint.
