Opel / Vauxhall Astra rear axle trailing arm bushings removal and install
In this video we show you how to diagnose the rear bushing issue also we show you how to replace it with using the Sealey VSE4787 tool always remember to Mark everything first once you do anything with your suspension make sure you get it tracked when doing this job make sure you get it tracked on a proper 4-wheel computer alignment if you don't you will cause damage your tyres and possibly worse if your tyres blow bad steering bad handling
A trailing-arm suspension, sometimes referred as trailing-link is a vehicle suspension design in which one or more arms (or "links") are connected between (and perpendicular to and forward of) the axle and a pivot point (located on the chassis of a motor vehicle). It is typically used on the rear axle of a motor vehicle. A leading arm, as used on the Citroën 2CV and the M422 Mighty Mite, has an arm connected between (and perpendicular to, and to the rear of) the axle and the chassis. It is used on the front axle.

Thank you, just putting mine back together (no torque setting though), not so easy doing it on the floor without the lift, but nevertheless, completed, did use the correct tools, the 'sockometer'. After purchasing the Sealey VSE4787 I have about broke even (except labour) but the Sealey has a good second hand resale value especially as I could not find any second ones at all and I have a few spanner towards my tool kit. Jobs a good un.

One thing we find useful doing bushes like these or lowering subframes is instead of tipex or a marker pen is to give it a quick spray of paint around about the mounting.it gets in tight to where the parts meet so when trying to line it back up you can get it very near if not spot on to where it was removed.

The special tool will get the new bush in correctly, but it needs said that getting the old one out is very difficult even with the correct tool, do not underestimate how tough these bushes are to remove. I used a SDS drill/hammer with the chisel fitting to push the old bush out and even then it was 10 minutes of hard work. Be careful not to damage the inside of the bush housing on the axel. Hope this helps someone.

Hi Leon great video really enjoy all of them (& Robs at One Auto). The Sealey Tool looks the business but its a bit expensive for a one off operation for a diyer. Just wondering whether the bush could be installed by first placing it in the freezer for a few hours enough for the casing to retract & then gently tap it in with a soft faced hammer. Obviously the rubber wont shrink but the metal surround might by a fraction enough to tap it home without a puller ? Just an idea
@bodgitandleggitgarage
@bodgitandleggitgarage 6 жыл бұрын
Guy Horner hi mate yes I agree it's expensive for one off but like I said in the video it does a lot more vehicles and certainly makes your life easier I very much doubt freezing the bushing will work there's too much rubber there just would not shrink enough all you need to know is if you've got a few people with these type of vehicles you can make money back on them tool by doing the job for them

Hello sir! Can you please inform me about the dimensions ( inner diameter and total height ) for the big tool with the two screws you use at first for the extraction of the old bush and fall inside to the tool? I can't find here in Greece soon this tool and in a few days I must remove and install 2 bushes to my client car and I must make one similar tool myself. To install it I have the tools and I prefer not remove them with air hammer. Best Regards!!!

This is the best video on the job. DO NOT TRY TO PRESS THEM IN WITHOUT THE TOOL. Easy to hack them out but I tried to bodge something together to press them in. Waste of time. The Werkzeug is eye wateringly expensive but a beautiful bit of kit a 5 year old could press the bushes in using it. A Superhero might do it without.

great video mate. removed my axle on astra coupe mk4 for refurb and treating rear end. im thinking now with aligning those 3 bolts either side might mess up the alignment of axle. i did roughly mark it before removal but now wondering if those 2mm or so might make it crab down the road. i noticed on that car it had no fuel tank sheild mine has fell to bits and its impossible to get replacement. did a lot of mk4 astras come without tank sheild iv heard some did. might remove mine if so

@martinroberts3977
@martinroberts3977 3 жыл бұрын
These bushes aren't level all the way along, they decrease in size like a bad cone. the actual part which is wedged is about 12mm so really you're only moving 12mm of the bush, measure it with a calliper. Get a RUBBER mallet and WD40 Spray the WD40 at the side facing out of the car. Spray the sleeve then bang the sleeve when the bush sits with the mallet, this is so it penetrates between the bush and the sleeve. Once you have done they get a proper round hammer and give it a a couple of marks and you'll see the bush move another 2 smacks and it flying out! To help things along spray it the bush sleeve a couple of days before you do the job! Ive done loads of these and all of them pop straight out, in fact all the bushes Ive fitted on Vauxhalls post 2000 have been easy to do I think they're designed like that. Now theres another issue with marking a bush and refining the new one in the same place is if the precious one was fitted incorrectly then the new one will be fitted incorrectly. The bush has to be fitted with the chunky part at the lowest part where the car is level on the ground.its to bare the weight. So as long as thats where the chunky bit is you're good!

So the first set of new bushings which arrived were picked by someone who'd never seen a trailing arm before, I take it? -that used to frustrate me in previous job as well. While I get the people working in supplier warehouses aren't going to have the knowledge and skills of the customers, I don't think it's too much to ask for them to know enough to avoid glaring errors. E.g. I'd expect someone in an electronic component warehouse to know 2N4506 is a transistor partnumber and not send the customer 10 RF chokes.
